In the beginning of the book, Michael was an all-star baseball pitcher. Game after game he pitched very excellent even though they’re only allowed so many pitches a week because they are in little league. Michael is a twelve-year-old boy that can pitch eighty-miles per hour. Michael saw this bad kid running from the cops, so Michael throws the ball from home plate all the way past the field and hit the guy in the head knocking him to the ground. Michael meets this wonderful girl one day and later on founded out that she was his hero’s daughter and wasn’t too happy with her when he found out because she didn’t tell him.

In The Blind Side, Michael was raised in the projects of Memphis, Tennessee. One evening after a basketball game Leigh Anne Touhy notices Michael walking down the road, shivering in the cold. After having her husband stop the car to speak to him, she had learned Michael had planned to sleep at the school gym after everyone else had left. Leigh Anne offered Michael a warm place to sleep at her and her family’s home. This moment between these two was Michael’s first real feeling of family. This sparked the relationship that would give him a reason to keep living and gave him something to live for. Leigh Anne continued to include Michael in family gatherings which only enhanced the motherly feeling Michael got from her.

Most of his family and other colleagues address him to see if he is through with Ked’s death, but really he was depressed all along. “I can't tell how sad i really am about Keds versus how sad i am in general”(Cameron 223). In addition, Michael gets sad of unusual things. “I can picture her eating a banana in her tiny office. This, too, makes me sad”(226). Michael gets depressed about Mrs. Dietrich being alone. Also, Michael gets heartbroken about other little things. “I think of her learning to write beautifully as a child and then growing up to be a guidance counsellor, and this makes me unhappy”(227). Michael is not just depressed of his dogs death, but every little problems in his life.

On the trip there Leah Anne stopped the car to get a eye-to-eye conversation showing that she takes great care in finding out Michaels past and how she can help him for the better. One night Leah Anne asked a simple question to Michael, if he wanted to stay? Michael responded " I don't like anywhere else" and sure enough she turned the guest room into a comfortable place for Michael with a bed, that he had never had before.

Through the use of low-key lighting, long-shot and dialogue, Hancock made me recognize the significance of friends and family by revealing to me the positive influence one young teenager can have on a range of people - in this case Michael is having a positive influence on Sean, his football team/coach and Leigh Anne. Not only did Michael influence these characters in a positive way, but they influenced him as well and changed him for the better. I'm concerned about the fact that our society is not improving instead it is becoming much worse with all the stereotyping that is rumoured. Avoid stereotyping others because you are not going to receive anything from it apart from putting others down. While Michael’s culture was very poor and high-context, Leigh Anne and her culture are a nearly perfect contrast. Leigh Anne’s family has quite a large amount of money and a very grand house with many expensive furnishings. Leigh Anne’s very high-class culture allows for her to put quite a bit of time and money into her children’s education making it a priority in their lives, unlike Michael’s. When Michael officially moves in with Leigh Anne she makes the comment that his room is not much, but it’s a room and Michael states that he’s never had one before, meaning he has never actually had a room to himself. This was a good contrast between the two cultures because while Leigh Anne has to clean out a spare bedroom full of her designing equipment in order to accommodate Michael moving in, while Michael was so poor has never lived in a house where he was able to have his own

The lack of ability of creating friendships when he was a child could explain why he always surrounded himself with children, and preferred to be in the presence of children than adults. He always stated that children were pure in the heart and less manipulative than adults. The Id of Michael struggled with the ego. The ego was never able to keep under control his desires and pleasures, allowing his Id to take over. His creation of the amusement park shows how the Id overpowered his ego. The amusement park wasn’t only for children to enjoy, but for him to enjoy and relive his childhood. Freud would analyze this gratification as becoming a core aspect of Michael’s personality.

But despite that, Leigh Ann did not let that shape her, in fact, she was very happy when she was taking care of Michael “I am happy; it has everything to do with Michael” she said one in the movie. On the other hand, for Michael, meeting Leigh Ann was probably the biggest life changing event during his life. When she took him in a took care of him and ensured that he has a happy life just like any of her children do, Michael felt something he has probably never felt before. Belonging. Leigh Ann provided him with things that he did not have the ability to have as a kid such as bedtime stories from children’s books, having a person that he could talk to and having a person who greatly cared about him. Furthermore, Leigh Ann greatly influenced his football career and she was his biggest supporter. She provided him with a tutor to raise his academic performance so he can attain a scholarship. She encouraged him, protected him and taught him the value of family and the importance of protecting them. Towards the end of the movie, Leigh Ann decides to adopt Michael legally. She was surprised that when she got to a government official, they said that she would only need to sign some papers without consulting his biological mother. The next day Leigh Anne Tuohy wakes up and realizes that Michael is nowhere to be found and also did not take any of their belongings with him. She runs out of the house and catches him walking out of the driveway. At that moment she demands Michael to come back and asks him would he like to stay for Thanksgiving dinner. Michael continues to stay with the family and even pulls his grades up enough to play football for the school. After giving Michael the unconditional love of a family, the Tuohys ask Michael would he like for them to become his legal guardians. At first, she would like Michael to be honest in their relationship but then when he is, she doesn't want to hear the truth anymore. When he says that he likes looking at other women, he tells her that she "[doesn't] have to listen to [it]" (p.4) however, "[she] wants to" (p.4) listen to the truth. Once he reveals everything to his wife, she is heartbroken and doesn't want to hear "about how pretty [the women are]."(p.5) She wants him to keep everything "to himself" (p.5) because "[she's] not interested."(p.5) Their marriage is unstable.

This is shown when he starts to accept the help others are offering him. He accepts the Touy’s help by going shopping with Leanne and working with a tutor that they hire for him, he also starts to work with his teacher’s in-between classes in order to improve his grades.
