Michael met with one of Dee’s friends to tell him that he asked a doctor to cover up the pregnancy, and he chose stomach cancer “...because the symptoms could match up with those of early pregnancy” (140). In these first encounters the reader gets to see Michael's original attitude and goals in life. His main goal is to make money. He doesn’t seem to care much for people and relationships as we see in his actions toward Dee and his wife, “He spots Wife No. 4 through the open kitchen door, in yoga pants and tight T-shirt. He gets the full protuberant effect of his recent investments in her, the top-of-the-line viscous silicone gel sacs implanted in her retromammary cavities, for minimal capsular contracture and scarring” (90). Michael Deane is clearing only looking for his own gain, treating both Dee’s and Wife No. 4’s body’s as his

Nicholas Kristof attempts to be humorous in his article “Let them Sweat,” however Kristof ends up hurting his ethos significantly. Kristof attempts to lighten the mood by cracking several jokes, and statements that are unheard of and unexpected to the reader. While this attempts to create pathos, the reader is unable to relate to his statements, causing the verbiage used to harm his ethos, thus causing the reader to question his credibility. For example, “The Gentle Reader will think I've been smoking Pakistani opium” clearly shows that Kristof expects that the reader will think that he is insane, automatically creating a damaged reputation at the beginning of his article.

The first reason is that Michael begins the story as a lonely kid who needs a connection with someone or something. For example, ”Oh, he was lonely. Without the natural protective instinct of Michaels personality and the compassion Leigh Anne shows towards her adoptive son. the movie would not be as compelling and emotional as it is. Michael, coming from a rough background of a poor family and low education, learns to trust and love Leigh Anne and her family as she treats him like her own son. The only reason Michael gets to where he is on the football team is through Leigh Anne's constant motivation, support, and love. Michael feels as though it is his duty to protect not only her family, but also use this motivational instinct on the field to help his team win. This outlook is cruicial to Michael's amazing football abilities. Before he knew his self worth, Michael did not have much to defend in his life. The love and support from Leigh Annes family encouraged Michael to take his powerful defensive qualities and use them in every benefiting way he can in
Michael can represent two character archetypes: the child of an immigrant seeking the American dream and the fallen hero. The American dream has a variety of meanings to different people, but in this case, it would mean that Michael is working to achieve success much like his parents did. It is recognized that the cost of working towards success comes at a price, but this is where the fallen hero trope comes into play. When Michael decides to seek revenge, he works for the Mafia and believes he is a sacrificial hero to the family he’s trying to raise, slaving away for their sake. He had good intentions; he only wanted to bring legitimacy to his family.
