In the short story A Good Man is Hard to Find, by O’Connor, we are told of the story of a family just about to leave for a trip to Florida. The character we are viewing this story through is the grandmother of the family, mother to the father. The grandmother protested the trip because of supposed bandits that were also headed to Florida, and because she wanted to instead see connections in Tennessee. After ignoring her complaints the family began their trip to Florida. On the way the grandmother was able to talk her son into a slight detour in order for her to see an old plantation she had visited in her youth. Along the old path to this house the grandmother realized she was mistaken about the plantation and through use of her cat accidently …show more content…
For example the father’s and mother’s flaw was the decision to travel, unarmed and unprotected when a known outlaw was traveling nearby. Another was the grandmother’s mistaken location of this plantation, caused by her longing to see the places of her past. The grandmother selfishness in diverting the trip, then only pleading for her life shows that humans however good their intentions, can be self-serving and egocentric. The Misfit portrayed the very worst of human nature his actions and thoughts. Even though The Misfit was a deranged killer who believed the only meaningful and pleasurable act in life was meanness towards others. Both the son and daughter in this story were rude, obnoxious, and disobedient children. Through their actions the children show that humans, even as children, can be perverse and obstreperous in nature. The mother’s character shows how obscure and unimportant one can let themselves become. This portrays the submissive behavior that humans can have, and how it can take over one’s life. The way that the mother so coolly accepts her fate, and even thanks the man that is going to kill her and her children, shows the meekness of human
"A Good Man is Hard to Find" is an extremely powerful commentary that elucidates Flannery O'Connor's opinions about religion and society. Like the majority of her other works, " A Good Man is Hard to Find" has attracted many "interpretations based on Christian dogma" (Bandy 1). These Christian explications are justified because Miss O'Connor is notorious for expressing Catholic doctrines through her fiction. Once she even remarked "I see from the standpoint of Christian orthodoxy" (Kropf 1). This longstanding reputation compels every critic of O'Connor to expose the religious convictions encrypted within her stories. The grandmother's final gesture towards the Misfit is not a
Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is the story of a family’s vacation tragically ended by The Misfit and his gang. On the way to their vacation spot in Florida, the Grandmother remembers a plantation in Georgia she used to visit when she was a young lady and desperately wants to see it. She tells her son, Bailey, what road it is on and everyone is excited to see it. After a while, the grandmother realizes that she was wrong about where the plantation was and becomes so upset at herself that she knocks things over in the car which causes a car accident. A passing car stops to help the family but the Grandmother realizes that one of the men is a murderer, nicknamed, The Misfit. While one of
In the short story, 'A Good Man is Hard to Find', the main character is the grandmother. Flannery O'Connor, the author, lets the reader find out who the grandmother is by her conversations and reactions to the other characters in the story. The grandmother is the most important character in the story because she has a main role in the stories principal action. This little old lady is the protagonist in this piece. We learn more about her from her direct conversation with the son, Bailey, her grandchildren, June Star and John Wesley, and the Misfit killer. Through these conversations, we know that she is a lady raised from a traditional background. In the story, her attitude changes
In today’s society, several individuals have come across a point where they were on the verge of the death. Murder is constantly being thrown across headlines, news reports, and social media throughout America. It has become a disastrous factor throughout many individual’ lives. Viewing families suffer from their lost loved ones, as well as the murder of innocent lives have been tremendously relevant in today’s society. What many individuals fail to understand, is what actually happens during their last seconds on earth. Throughout the short story, “A Good Man Is Hard To Find,” O’Connor uses a Grandmother to convey to the readers the actually value of goodness an individual tends to gain when confronted with death. Just as revealed in the short story, violence frequently triggers an individual’s actions when presented with death. In “A Good Man Is Hard To Find,” Flannery O’Connor uses theme, conflict, and religion in order to portray the false acts of goodness projected by the grandmother.
The concept of being a “good” person has painted the picture of how people have handled their lives throughout history. On the same note, this concept has also been the subject of much debate; such is the case in Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”. The protagonist, the unnamed grandmother struggles to find the “good” in others and herself. O’Conner uses foreshadowing, characterization, and a distinct point of view to make her point. In my interpretation, her point is that only through conflict and turmoil can good truly be found.
Brutality, humor, religion, and violence are a few themes portrayed throughout many of Flannery O’Connor’s short stories. In many of her short stories, O’Connor exposes the dark side of human nature and implements violent and brutal elements in order to emphasize her religious viewpoints. In the short stores “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and “Revelation”, O’Connor explicitly depicts this violence to highlight the presence and action of holy grace that is given to a protagonist who exudes hypocritical qualities.
In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” O’Connor introduces a family whose lives ironically turn up side down while on a trip to Florida. For instance, before leaving on the trip, the grandmother (who wants to go to Tennessee in stead of Florida) tells her son, Bailey, about the newspaper article. Thus, the article states that a prisoner escapes to Florida and calls himself the misfit. However, her son basically ignores her and they end up taking the trip to Florida regardless of the warning. Also, the grandmother takes her cat, Pitty Sing, along on the trip in order to prevent any mishaps by leaving her behind. In addition, the grandmother wears a pin so that if she dies in an accident anyone who finds her, knows that she is a woman. Moreover, she points out several different sights on her way to Florida. Most significantly, she says, “Look at
In Flannery O'Connor's A Good Man is Hard To Find, one is struck by the unexpected violence at the end of the story. However, if you re-read the story a second time, you will see definite signs that foreshadow the grotesque ending. The story begins with the typical nuclear family being challenged by the grandmother who doesn't want to take the vacation to Florida. She has read about a crazed killer by the name of the Misfit who is on the run heading for Florida. Unfortunately, she is ignored by every member of the family except for the little girl, June Star, who can read the grandmother like an open book. The fact that she admonishes Bailey, her son, of this Misfit
A Good Man is Hard to Find A Good Man is Hard to Find, written by Flannery O’Connor in 1955 focuses on a family and their relationship with the Grandma who loves to travel and explore the world. This short story can be viewed in several elements. One I can relate to the most is character. A character in any short story, novel, movie, or drama is defined as an “imagined person who inhabits a story” (Kennedy, X. J., & Gioia, D. (2012), p. 26).
Life is a funny thing. Society says people should behave this way, while religion says it should be that way, and family and parents have their own rules. People will pretend to be the thing that they believe is most appropriate and acceptable amongst the people they are around and who it is they are trying to impress. This behavior will continue until something shows them who they really are and how they have truly behaved all along. The truth is people will always pretend to be someone or something that are not until a force of some kind comes along to teach them otherwise; using psychological and biographical reading strategies to analyze “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and Revelation” by Flannery O’Connor one will come to see the reality
In the poem “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, he argues exactly what his title implies, a good man is hard to find. But the question still remains, what is the elusive definition of a “Good Man”? Technically the definition of a “Good Man” is nonexistent. The people who determine whether someone is a good person or not, they do so by their moral beliefs or codes. So, a good man to one person could be a horrible man to the next person. In this poem, the grandmother implies that certain people are “good” because of what they did, but they are good to her because they have the same moral values as her.
At first, The Misfit is easily determined as an unscrupulous man because he is a criminal. The grandmother, on the other hand, perceives herself as a “good individual” with merely any flaws. The grandmother is self-centered, manipulative, pretentious; and even racist at times, with her insulting “Negro” or “nigger” references (O’Connor 278). She’s is also greedy, as she emphasizes “she would have done well to marry Mr. Teagarden” because he became a very wealthy man (O’Connor 279). The grandmother strikes us as a particularly hollow individual, extremely judgmental about her surroundings, but, lacking interpersonal perception.
In the short story A Good Man Is Hard to Find, written by Flannery O’Connor, the theme that the definition of a ‘good man’ is mysterious and flawed is apparent. The reader must realize that it is difficult to universalize the definition of a good man because every person goes through different experiences. Thus, these experiences affect his or her viewpoint and in turn flaw ones view on a good man. O’Connor conveys this theme through her excellent use of diction, imagery, foreshadowing, and symbolism as well as through a creative use of repetition and an omniscient point of view.
The grandmother believes The Misfit is “good” because he will not shoot a lady, which is a denial in her faith to keep her moral principles. Her theory proves to be false. The only thing “good” about the Misfit is his uniformity in living out his moral cipher of there is no pleasure but meanness in life.
“A Good Man Is Hard to Find” is a short story about family planning a vacation. Everyone wants to go to Florida except the grandmother's wants to go to Tennessee. She told the family to not go to Florida by saying there is a killer by the name The Misfit “Here is the fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed to Florida”(O’Connor 616). However the son Bailey, his wife, and the three children ignore her and they go to Florida. Grandmother took her cat with her, but she didn’t tell them and she hid it under her seat. The traveling was the same as with traveling with children, they play and sometime, they fight. Then the family stops to eat at “The Tower”. After that grandmother starts talking with the owner
