An “Alice in Wonderland meets machine guns” is how Zack Snyder’s 2011 film, Sucker Punch can best be described. The story revolves around the story of a girl named Baby Doll who opens the film and sets the “Ordinary World” in Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey. In the first 10 minutes of the film, the ordinary world gets explored in which we see the background and receive some knowledge into Baby Doll’s world. Baby Doll’s mother passed away which sends her stepfather into a fury after finding that her mother’s last will and testament left everything to her two daughters and nothing for him. In his fury, the stepfather attempts to assault Baby Doll but realizes that in order to truly get at Baby Doll, he switches his intentions onto Baby Doll’s younger sister. As Dr. Gorsky states, “You don’t think you’re strong enough? You are. You’re afraid. Don’t be.” To me, that quote states everyone has the capability to fight for what they want, in Sucker Punch’s case, it is freedom. Furthermore, you shouldn’t doubt yourself because its in those moments where you have to prove yourself that you can surprise yourself with how much you can push yourself to succeed. Additionally, imagination can be an escape from reality if that is what helps you to fight your way through life, as Baby Doll re-imagines the asylum in a different environment and she becomes stronger when she sees herself as one who can defeat samurai, steampunk Nazi soldiers, orcs with a dragon, and sci-fi robots. You too can imagine yourself as whatever you want to be in order to take on whatever task that lies before you. You may not realize the power you hold within yourself to live your own life the way that you want to on your own terms. You are the one who holds the key to set yourself free and you have all the weapons you need. Now
