The Foundations for University Success course has offered several resources to students pursuing an education to establish a personalized approach to educational attainment. This course has provided me with resources in the areas of critical thinking, goal establishment/attainment, ethical decision making, applying the writing process and other resources needed to establish academic success. “Goal setting is an important component of students' motivation, self-regulation, and achievement in academic settings” (Anderman & Anderman, 2009, pp. 442-446). Anderman & Anderman (2009) defines goals as a behavior or outcome that one is consciously trying to perform or attain. Goals exert positive effects to success by maintaining a person’s focus …show more content…
This exercise identified how individuals prioritize values when making ethical decisions. During this exercise I was able to understand my personal values in relation to the values of other associated with my decisions. I was able to understand my blind spot and how they impact others when making decisions. For example, I learned that sometimes I fail to be accountable to those who are depending on me. Also, I am satisfied with my own needs and become complacent with leaving problems unresolved in the long-term and everyone else to fend for themselves. I also run the risk of developing unrealistic role expectations. I tend to rely too much on the virtues associated with a particular role, forgetting that individuals are fallible regardless of their role. By understanding what values are most important to me and what values are most important to the other parties involved in an ethical situation, I can minimize unnecessary conflict, make better ethical decisions, and live my values with confidence and …show more content…
Each resource has great value to my ability to reach and accomplish my academic goals. The citation generator is a very crucial tool needed to assist me with writing my paper in APA format. One of the areas that I struggled with personally was properly citing my sources and writing a reference page. Another important resource that would be crucial to my academic success would be the plagiarism checker. The plagiarism checker provides me with the ability to check my paper for plagiarism before submitting them. Also, once my paper is properly assessed for plagiarism, I will be able to utilize citation generator to properly cite sources that I have used to write my paper to avoid plagiarism. There are other resources available to ensuring academic success and goal attainment such as the Center for Writing Excellence and the University
Goals are imperative for individuals to succeed. They can be used in all aspects of life, including university study. There are various reasons why setting realistic goals are important. Firstly, they provide you with the ability to monitor short and long term progress against a desired outcome. Short term goals or milestones are important to maintain an individual's motivation and help them visualise the successful outcome. In addition, goals help to develop time management skills, whilst providing direction and allowing the individual to feel in control. As a mother
Goal setting like this will help me become a better student. I will complete more tasks by making them SMART. I will be able to approach them and measure my progress towards completion. I will be able to achieve them and they will be realistic. I will be able to finish them before a deadline and pace myself in its completion. This will make setting and completing goals much
I have lived in Morgan Township my whole life and went to Morgan Elementary as a child. Through these years I have seen first hand how much teachers cared about their students. Many teachers formed one on one relationships with kids including me. Suddenly, the teachers seem more like your friends. This is something that I feel is very important when wanting to have a successful school district. In addition, Ross has always held students to a higher academic standard than most schools in the area. Which I feel in some cases is needed. Ross does an excellent job promoting academic success. Whether it be coming in early for help, or study skills. Ross provides amazing tools for students in achieving this goal. Another truly amazing aspect about
At-risk youth face many difficult factors when attempting to achieve school success. School climate and student support are two of the most important aspects of student success (Malecki & Demaray, 2006; Tsai, Lin, Chiu, & Joe, 2009; Wentzel, 1998). School support refers to student’s perceptions of supportive behaviors, which can come from multiple sources in the school environment (e.g., teachers, staff, peers) in multiple forms (e.g., emotional, appraisal, instrumental, informational) all helping to enhance the student’s functioning and buffer from adverse outcomes (Malecki & Demaray, 2006, Tardy, 1985). Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a college readiness system which helps to build positive school supports for students in the academic middle. Research has shown that AVID produces higher graduation and college completion rates for minority students (Guthrie & Guthrie, 2000; Huerta, Watt, & Reyes, 2013; Watt, Huerta, & Alkan, 2011; Watt, Powell, Mendiola, & Cossio, 2006.) Other research has looked at positive classroom environment, individual determination, and close relationships with AVID instructors that could play a role in student’s success in college (Mendiola, Watt, & Huerta, 2010; Watt, Johnston, Huerta, Mendiola, & Alkan, 2008). While recent research has started to examine the underlying impacts of AVID, minimal research has been completed in relation to AVID’s effectiveness from the students’ perspectives.
The changes that AHS should make to increase their student success is to make their summers shorter and making more school days. In the story, Gladwell talks about this point and states, “but take a look at the following sets of elementary school test scores results, and see if your faith in the value of long summer holidays isn't profoundly shaken.” (6) It's based off how much time you spend in school and how much effort you want to give. Another big thing is the teachers need to motivate the students more and push them to want them to come to school more often. “Alexander tracked the progress of 650 first graders looking how they scored widely in math and reading skills.”(6) Students with talent are worshiped in their society effort is everything.
In Student Success Skills Class I have learned a numerous amount of information to be successful in college and life. While enrolled in this class I learned how to construct a cover letter and a resume and how to find a balance for what you are doing. Being in this class I learned about learning preferences and an abundance of tests and activities that help you grasp an understanding of yourself. While in this class I also learned about thinking and solving skill, how to produce affecting notes and how to stay healthy.
The first step in achieving academic success is setting your focus. It has been proven that students who have set academic goals for themselves are more likely to complete their college education and achieve
Successful students work hard and make the right choices to conquer their goals in life. Throughout my high school and college education, I feel that I have done all the right things except for my MCAT exam. I am writing this section because I want the Committee to see the person I am before making any decisions. I understand that my MCAT exam was not performed to the best of my abilities, so I do not want to be judged from those results. I have always put in my best effort in anything I do. Medicine is my greatest passion and I am positive that I can be successful. Learning all that I can about medicine and putting it into action in a professional setting is the type of student I will be. I will not stop working until I am the best physician
I believe students will learn from me sharing my experiences the idea that to achieve goals takes hard work and time. Some goals cannot be achieved over night, but through perseverance and dedication they can be reached. Also, through my experience I hope they understand that sometimes goals
Goal setting requires developing a plan to action which is used to motivate and steer efforts towards achieving a final goal or purpose. During the PSP, students are introduced to the SMART goal setting strategy. The SMART goal strategy is defined as ‘Strategic and Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results-based and Time-bound’ (O’Neill & Conzemius, 2011). In order to pursue goals, students benefit from manifesting a personalised criteria utilising the SMART strategy. The main advantage of SMART goal setting is that students envision their achievements from the beginning with the end in mind (Covey, 1999). By focusing on the techniques required in SMART goal setting, students can ensure the gap between current reality and their envisioned goals are closed (O’Neill & Conzemius, 2011). Additionally, SMART goals require constant monitoring and reassessment to align the focus of the result to be attained or achieved. However, the main limitation in setting SMART goals is that students may set unrealistic goals due to poor self- evaluation. Furthermore, to accomplish the goals students have set for themselves, they must commit and adhere to each aspect of the SMART strategy so as to avoid becoming overwhelmed (Borysenko, 2005). Although SMART goal setting is a highly involved
The research particular interest was in direct correlation with the study of goals in psychology, and how motivation is affected in terms of how your goals are constructed and carried out. What has been previously studied and examined is how goals are the basis of certain maladaptive patterns, and thus conceptualizing important differences and how a person perceives and behaves and what personality is best suited for them. Uniquely on all basis of scientifically finding goals have been defined differently amongst a wide variety of researchers. Goals are the achievable desires and ambitions of people and how they rationalize and decipher how to achieve and complete the tasks efficiently. Additionally, another significant area of value and previously studied is for some goals can structure as elements of status, exemplary grades might reflect a filling of self-worth or some important reassurance in abilities leading to a boost in confidence in all things related. Goals can be created out of the necessary ability to perform or for the additive benefit in assimilating a growing mindset. The review of the body of knowledge on the topic on the study of goals in psychology was two different approaches of mindset from individuals, how their patterns demonstrated their motivation and their cognition levels which essentially lead to a certain behavior. The first approach identified by (Bandura and Cervone, 1983; Locke & Latham, 1990) revealed the importance of developing hard to
This article attempts to explain how personal, cultural, and organizational values play significant parts in decision-making. In addition, the foundation of ethical dilemmas can often be traced to conflicting values. This paper will also briefly discuss how ethical dilemmas can be mitigated. A practical approach for understanding how ethical dilemmas occur, how dilemmas can be prevented, and how to make ethical decisions can best
Student success, like joining an extracurricular activity has an impact on student success, but it doesn’t have to be good. Some activities might require lots of time and sometimes students don’t have that time. It can be a positive impact because it normally looks good on college applications. Lots of extracurricular and the instructions, as well as strictness, gives the students a chance to receive a seal of some sort, sashes and/or cords for graduation and their diplomas. Some of that success in high school is required to get into a school, especially 4-year schools. Students also learn from it when they are in a certain club, sport, or any other type of extracurricular activity. Anaheim schools can improve student success if the following changes take place: Anaheim schools don't have SSLANT, but it may be a good idea because in lots of Anaheim schools the students feel free of talking wherever they would like and enforce higher levels in every subject, so the students will be more advanced than their grade level, not misguiding them with praise, and providing free extracurricular activities as well as providing you with with the materials you need so that even low-income students can enjoy them. In order to increase student success in Anaheim schools, the change that needs to happen for students to be successful would be that we should have SSLANT and get into single file lines as we walk to our other classes, the only time to socialize that should be allowed is lunch. Praising a child can make them feel smarter than they really are and might not want to get anything done. When the materials are provided they feel more comfortable being in the activity because they don’t feel left out without the materials and necessities.
In our school we believe that every student has a story to tell, and it is our job to help them learn to tell it well. We need to pull together as a staff, as a community, and help each student discover his or her voice. Some of our students will become devoted mathematicians or passionate writers; some will blossom into budding young artists or actors and actresses; and music may strike a cord in others and turn them into voices that sing; whatever their passions, whatever their career paths, it is our job - no, our joy - as teachers to help the students in our halls and classrooms to discover, not just knowledge and skills, but to discover themselves. The task is daunting. The stakes are high; but the reward is immeasurable. Through passionate instruction, empowering supervision, and uncluttered communication, our school is up to the challenge, a challenge overcome through the community, the students, the staff, and the supervisors cooperating as one.
Scientist have research that about 90% of the people don't achieve their goals because of the challenges encountered. Many of our students here in the city of Anaheim are faced with challenges everyday and sometimes don’t know how to deal with them. My argument is that student success is founded upon giving full effort from students rather than by achieving good grades. In the research story of the secret to raising smart kids by Carol Dweck is a research based paper on the achievements of students.”The mastery oriented children, on the other hand, think intelligence is malleable and can be developed through education and hard work. They want to learn above all else. After all if you believe it that you can expand your intellectual skills, you want to do just that, because slipups stem from a lack of effort, not ability, they can be remedied by more effort”(27).The student intellectual intelligence can grow by studying. They believe that intelligence is malleable. It can be changed or shaped by the hard work and what things we change. If school in Anaheim cared about their education we would be talking about different topics. Since we would be putting so much effort to our changes of habit to better understanding in school we would be satisfied with our results. Many of us would try again and again if it is possible to get a better result. Putting effort can take time but at the end it is worth it. Many of our students believe a challenge changes their intelligence view.
