The changes that AHS should make to increase their student success is to make their summers shorter and making more school days. In the story, Gladwell talks about this point and states, “but take a look at the following sets of elementary school test scores results, and see if your faith in the value of long summer holidays isn't profoundly shaken.” (6) It's based off how much time you spend in school and how much effort you want to give. Another big thing is the teachers need to motivate the students more and push them to want them to come to school more often. “Alexander tracked the progress of 650 first graders looking how they scored widely in math and reading skills.”(6) Students with talent are worshiped in their society effort is everything.
If you want to be successful as a college student you need to understand these three strategies.
As a new freshman at the University of Evansville, time management stands as a recurring challenge of mine. Between taking 15 credit hour classes, which consist of three honors courses, working and studying, my time to live is pretty much gone. Since being in DISC 110 Student Success Strategies, which I found crazy at first to even be in, I have learned strategies to successfully manage my time management challenges to ensure I stay on track each semester and for the rest of my academic career.
Year-End Progress Update - Describe the final results of your action plan and how successful you were in meeting your goal and impacting student achievement.
I feel supporting students is a collective effort, therefore, my goals are to research programs outside the STS programs in order to provide students with more resources. I will be working with different programs, such as the Career Center, Graduate Division, Study Abroad, etc. to better cater the PPALS population. I now take the time to "self-care". I feel it is important and beneficial to the population I serve that I am healthy. In addition, I understand that there are different populations with different needs, therefore, I try to advocate and support the specific needs to each population. I do this by learning about resources that could aid their transition into UC Irvine. There is always room for improvement. Therefore, I try to learn
In reviewing the many take-aways I have had from doing this student success course to hopefully become a well rounded student. The greatest take away was the strategies and tools I learned to help me succeed in life and in college as they were essential skills I lacked as a student. Helping me to build effective ways to get good grades in my other classes by building effective study habits then ineffective study habits I have been using previously. Thus I have improved in many ways than one in the many skills and strategies needed as a college student in order to succeed. Taking away how my values correlate to my major, Money management, time management and the steps needed in career and educational planning that
Some of the main arguments the author acknowledges is the amout of students who do not succeed either in high school or college. Points are signed out by explaining how the lack of money or education frustrates the students. A topic is mention based on how even graduated students do not succeed as much in life. These people took college for four years or more, invested a lot of money, and ended up being a truck driver or working with sewage. Which makes no sense because they received a certificate to earn a good amount of money and unfortunitly have to look somewhere else because of the need of money. Topics like this or lack of money and education are frequently repeated.Freshman college students fail the most because instead of being taught
I develop myself professionally by always being on time and dressing appropriately. I will arrive everyday prepared and organized to teach so that no teaching time is lost. I will strive to continue my education far beyond college with ongoing professional development which will give me opportunities to learn new things. I will set goals for myself and collaborate with other teachers to help myself become a professional educator.
Why is it so hard for student to be successful in college? In the book “Back to School” by Mike Rose, Rose talks about some of the different obstacle student’s faces in college that prevents them from being successful. Financial support plays a big part in student success. Money plays a huge factor in student success. Student that fail generally are the ones who are unable to pay school tuition. If students cannot afford the necessary equipment they need to succeed then they will have a hard time going through college. School supplies such as books and computers are a necessary for student success. Students need books and computers to be able to study in order to be successful. Student would go to college for a semester and drop out because they do not have money to pay for school. It is also hard to find jobs to help pay their way through college. Government don’t subsidize enough grand for student to go to college, instead they make it more difficult with loan subsidies. Possible solutions for student success are government subsidies, book vouchers and private endowment.
1. Which success elements did you learn during this class that you found the most helpful/interesting? Did you implement them into your life? If so, did they work out for you? If not, why not?
I have lived in Morgan Township my whole life and went to Morgan Elementary as a child. Through these years I have seen first hand how much teachers cared about their students. Many teachers formed one on one relationships with kids including me. Suddenly, the teachers seem more like your friends. This is something that I feel is very important when wanting to have a successful school district. In addition, Ross has always held students to a higher academic standard than most schools in the area. Which I feel in some cases is needed. Ross does an excellent job promoting academic success. Whether it be coming in early for help, or study skills. Ross provides amazing tools for students in achieving this goal. Another truly amazing aspect about
I know that college will be difficult for me because of time management, lack of support, and the challenging classes. I am a mother of seven children, and six grandchildren whom I have devoted my life to for many years. Now it is time for me to shine. Managing time is very hard for me because it takes up most of the day. I have to car pool my daughter to basketball games, and take my son back and forth to work. My husband also demands my attention and help, because he is older now and cannot do a lot of things on his own. He comes home from work at night and expects dinner to magically appear on the table and house work to automatically be done. Finally once everything is done, it is then eight already and I still have to get the things left that I need to do before school like finish homework, study for tests, and then have myself in bed before eleven. In order to become a successful college student I will have to overcome my challenges. I would like to finish college and major in nursing which is my number 1 goal in life.
What do think when you hear student success? Many people think different things. For example, student success could be a student having a good job in something they specialized on, and are living on their own without anybody's help. There are several different ways student succeed and ways to change schools in order for their students to succeed as well in this article. For instance, Anaheim High Schools can improve student success if we have longer school days, make the student be interested in school and on what they are learning, and having more after school programs that interest kids and will keep their minds off of bad things.
Student learning result focuses on students learning objectives that school leaders and teachers want students to achieve. Student outcomes are the real consequences that they whether achieve or not throughout their education or in life.
Do you believe the amount of time spent at school influences how smart you are or how well you do in school? At Anaheim High School if you ask students if they study at home, maybe about 50% of the students will tell you that they do and the other 50% will tell you that they do, but not as often as they should be. Majority of the students do very well on tests and other academic categories, but is all the material they are learning staying in their memory? There is only six hours of school, five days a week. It is most likely that not all of the information we have been told on a daily basis will stay in our memory for the next day. In order to increase student success at Anaheim High School, they should increase the time in class. In the essay “Marita’s Bargain” written by Gladwell, it states that when they increased the amount of time their students spent in each class, it helped them enhance in different academic categories, “I think that extended amount of time gives you the chance as a teacher to explain things, and more time for the kids to sit and digest everything that’s going on - to review, to do things at a much slower pace” (10). This is clarifying the idea that the more time you have in class it gives you the opportunity to process every bit of information you are given. You do not have to rush throughout your work or feel pressured to finish your assignments on time. This concept should be encouraged in order to improve the consistency in the students GPA’s.
There are many aspects that go into a student success. Many of the skills learned from Kindergarten through twelfth grade just are not efficient enough to help you achieve your goals after a student enters college. Our primary education has thought us many things, but what our teachers neglected was to prepare us for much upper level thinking. Professors can help support a student through college by focusing on critically thinking, communication and teamwork skills in order support the success of a student.
