“With the first pick of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft, the Colorado Rockies select catcher Steve Martin from Costal High School in Los Angeles, California.” These were the words that changed Steve’s life forever. As a four-year varsity-starting catcher for his high school, Steve was destined for greatness as soon as he stepped onto the field. His coach John Martin described the 6’2” 210 pound player as “the greatest athlete he’s ever had the pleasure to coach,” and that Steve was a “unique physical specimen.” Whenever he set foot on the diamond Steve was always at least two or three steps ahead of the competition. He was told he’d be moving up to the Rockies after playing in the final game of the season. “It was the best news I’ve ever heard aside from the day I got drafted,” said Martin, “but it came on the worst day of my life.” After playing three solid innings at catcher, a ball was hit up in the air and Steve sprinted towards the stands to try and make the catch, he failed to notice a practice bat on the ground near the stands. Expertly focused on the ball, instead of looking down to checked his surroundings, Steve kept running and ended up tripping on the bat, collapsing in a heap next to his team’s bench. The trainer rushed out and ultimately Steve had to be carried off the field in a stretcher. “The whole time I was thinking to myself, please don’t be my ACL,” Steve recalled. After a visit with the team doctor and a specialist in New York City, it was concluded that his ACL was torn, as well as his MCL, and meniscus. Extensive surgery would be required and Steve would be out of commission for at least a year. Manager for the Isotopes stated that, “I could the see the devastation in his eyes, he’s someone who loved the game so much and it hurt both me and him to see it taken away from him so easily.” After going through the surgery and months off rehab, Steve’s knee still had irreparable damage and after several long meetings with medical staff, it was decided that Steve wouldn’t be able to return to professional
