Steve Jobs Hardships

Steve Jobs, who is known as one of the greatest innovators of our time, had given a speech in 2005 to new graduates from Stanford. As many would find this ironic since he never graduated from college, but by the end of the speech they have realized why he was there to give the speech. He successfully gives the speech by using multiple rhetorical devices such as repetition of life experiences as well as common emotion that everyone consists of. By using those, his goals are to have the new graduates continue through life by doing what they love to do no matter what obstacles comes across their life.

“And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle” (Jobs). At Stanford University’s 2005 graduation ceremony, Steve Jobs was invited to give a speech that would serve an impact on those beginning their lives. Throughout the speech, Jobs elaborated on the background story of his life, successes, and failures, which all pertained to the true purpose of his speech. His stories and lessons had the ability to grasp the audience due to his consistent use of pathos, repetition, antitheton, and logos, all of which were enveloped into a short and simple structure that supported his statements regarding how individuals should live their own lives. Steve Jobs’ 2005 commencement speech contains rhetorical devices that all contribute to his exertion of life-changing advice that could benefit all individuals of society striving for success.

The Man Who Changed Technology as We Know It. Given the task of conceptualizing a man who truly changed the realm of technology as we know it today, my mind secludes one person. Consequently, that person is Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computer, now known simply as Apple. For this rhetorical analysis, I will be using three biographies/profiles about Jobs including “The Real Genius of Steve Jobs” by Malcolm Gladwell with The New Yorker (June 19, 2017), “Jobs’ Biography; Thoughts on Life, Death, and Apple” from NPR (October 25, 2011), and “Steve Jobs” from Biography.com (April 28, 2017).

One element that contributes to Steve Jobs’ ethos is the fact that he is so successful in his career. Already knowing who Steve Jobs was, he led the audience to the appeal that we is successful because of his company in which he worked hard for. One of the first things he mentioned in his speech to make it so he is comes off as smart when he says he created Apple, a multi-billion dollar company, and Pixar, the “most successful animation studio in the world.” This adds on to his knowledgeable self, creating validity because the people listening view Jobs as being high in the successful level and makes the audience believe him. Jobs continues with his reliability by saying that he was a college dropout and still went on to be extremely successful.

People don’t tend to work hard, and think things will just be handed to them. That’s not the case in the real world. In a study from jackcanfield.com, Successful people go the extra mile- and they stand out as a result. They get the promotions and the loyal customers. They grow their businesses twice as fast and attract the best employees. They receive financial rewards and job security. Best of all, they go home at night feeling satisfied and bursting with self-confidence”. Some might argue that some people are just not born with that ability to work as hard as others, but I believe once someone really tries their best they can achieve whatever they want to overcome. We can all agree that people who go that extra mile will achieve more than those who tend to take the easy way, in addition people should believe in themselves first. If you don't believe in yourself no one will. Society heavily influences our work agenda, often times pushing a human to the brink of wanting to just hit the easy button and move back in with their parents at age 50. Most people float through life thinking that the only way to be successful is to work the hardest and keep moving forward; however, to achieve success in any endeavor, a person must fail. These such failures can be the epitome of someone's success. Under it all, there is an art to the simplicity of living the easiest life possible.

Steve Jobs was like the Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and the Albert Einstein of our time.  He not only innovated personal computing, but personal media and communication, iTunes which became one of the most popular music and video retailers and Pixar which was one of his side projects had become one of the greatest animation digital movie creators and software. But all that is a just part of the list of his legacy, because in the end he still left behind Apple which is world’s most valuable company, which is valued at $350 Billion Dollars.

A. Attention Getter: How many people in this room own or have owned an IPod, IPhone, or IPad? Isn’t astounding how one man’s vision and innovation gave us all devices that have made the world today more connected than it’s ever been? Devices we NOW can’t imagine leaving behind when we walk out the front door in the morning. Whether it’s listening to music in your bedroom, reading the news on the train ride to work, checking your email at home or even sitting in a waiting room watching Netflix. It’s hard to deny the influence and impact that Steve Jobs has had on modern culture.

With the recent passing of Steve Jobs, there has been an intense spotlight focused on both the man and the company he built. Most of the attention has rightfully been focused on Jobs’ passion and creativity, as well as the remarkable period of innovation he preside. As a symbolic leader, the man not only once saving the company from bankruptcy but also building up a well-known brand that had integrate with our daily life – Apple.

First, working hard mean many things but what does it mean specifically? It means to put my best effort that I can. For example, if there was a project that was due on Friday but assigned on Monday, I won’t procrastinate. Instead, I will plan and finish the project on Wednesday. The project will be showing the best effort that I can do. I apply this to everything I work on in any situation. Persevering through hard times and to work on succeeding personal goals is the key to most successful people on Earth. For instance, Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, was actually homeless but encouraged himself to exceed more. As a result, he got a degree from Harvard University, found Apple, and found Pixar. Overall, working hard is to never give up and put your best effort forward.

Steve Jobs was known as a highly influential person because of his ability to be able to motivate people past their breaking points. Throughout his career Jobs motivates his employees to achieve what at that time seemed impossible. Because of this special talent, the company was able to create countless inventions that changed the way we live forever. This can be seen many times through his lifetime. For example, in Media Clip number 2, Motivation, Jobs was seen saying, “ Dylan, Picasso, Newton, they risk failure, and if we want to be great, we got to risk it too” Steve Jobs uses his skill to convince the team to take risks such as letting out a new computer and starting a computer business.

It would be best for the shareholders and the general public to know about Steve Jobs illness because they can decide how they can help him. For instance, for the general public they can find ways and to support him to treat his pancreatic cancer. As for the shareholders, it is important to disclose his illness to them because they would be able to decide if they want to continue to purchase Apple's shares. He does not have to necessarily explain in detalil about his severe illness, but he can disclose that he has that type of illness and what stage he is in. Thus, people would have an understanding of what Steve Jobs is going through. By not letting the general public know about his illness, then eventually they will know because he would

All of my life I’ve had to learn to be a hard worker. My family would never let something just be handed to me. Growing up, I’ve had to earn any privilege I wanted, such as a cell phone. My family members are all hard workers and that has carried on to me. Hard work is very important to my family and I. Hard work is not just doing the bare minimum for a job or goal, it is instead putting in all the effort someone has to get it done to the best of their ability. The amount of effort and time put into something is what makes a hard worker rather than the difficulty of the job. For example, the factory worker that gets the job done faster than their peers or the lawyer that practices their closing argument a few extra times. Not everyone has the quality of being a hard worker, but anyone can learn if they truly want to. Jobs that are rigorous are very beneficial in life because of what they can teach people. These types of jobs can teach someone how to better themselves and their life. I hold the belief that everyone should have a tough job at least once in their life because learning to be hardworking is the most important thing in life.
