In truth, however, those images have often been exaggerated. Many Cowboys were ex-slaves who sometimes had menial jobs and still faced discrimination after earning their freedom. Contrary to their image and code, many actual Cowboys rode across the west and slaughtered people in passing. They did not always treat their women perfectly and often abandoned families.
