Do you remember a time when you were stereotyped? Stereotypes are people who make statements using the word “all” against a race or something. For example, all white people are rednecks and meth users, this affect people in many ways. I agree with the author Shankar Vedantam article “How a self fulfilling stereotype can drag you down performance” that It can drag down many people in performance. The one time I was stereotype was when my classmates told me that I wouldn’t graduate high school and go to college for a career. In addition, when I heard someone say that statement I used that as motivation for myself in life. Perhaps, I was feeling motivated to do well in school so I can achieve my goal of graduate high school and going to a great college. Furthermore, when I told my parents that my classmates were stereotyping me by saying I wouldn’t graduate, my parents were laughing because they believe that I would achieve my goal in going to college for a great career. People can pervert stereotyping by not saying negative comments that can affect people, but say positive comments to people so it can motivate them. We as a community can stop stereotyping by getting to know the person first and making them feel welcome. Secondly, we can start making signs that say “No more stereotyping” around our campus and also spread the word about stereotyping. Stereotyping shouldn’t be used at all during any time in the world, it just a bad way to show your real self towards other people. In conclusion, this are reasons why people shouldn’t stereotype because it will affect anyone in many different ways, for example it can endanger their life. People who stereotypes should just try to keep every comment positive to other people and not hurt them because it can affect their performance in school or work.
