Although some people believe the lunch menu is unhealthy, it is healthy because you would get the healthy items instead of the unhealthy ones, you get a good amount of carbohydrates, and there are healthier choices but people just throw them away. Many teens at Wilson Middle School are getting the healthy foods and throwing them away. Then they just carry on like nothing happened. Also the food at Wilson is very healthy and has the right amount of carbohydrates in all of the food. But do we all know that we could get the healthy foods instead of the unhealthy foods?

In “Naked Lunch” by Michael Hollinger, a couple, Vernon, and Lucy are on the verge of reconciliation while engaging in a romantic dinner. However, when Lucy refuses to eat the meat cooked for her, Vernon lashes out and forces her to do so by continuing to pester her with his ignorance and presumptuous behavior. Lucy, being terrified, forcibly eats the meat given to her despite her regards of becoming a vegetarian after their break up.

Thinking about the importance and significance of food respective to our health, ethnic culture and society can cause cavernous, profound, and even questionable thoughts such as: “Is food taken for granted?”, “Is specialty foods just a fad or a change in lifestyle?”, and even “Is food becoming the enemy.” Mark Bittman, an established food journalist, wrote an article called “Why take food seriously?” In this article, Bittman enlightens the reader with a brief history lesson of America’s appreciation of food over the past decades. This history lesson leads to where the social standing of food is today and how it is affecting not only the people of America, but also the rest of the world.

Kraft Dinner is probably the easiest meal to prepare at home, which makes it a prime choice for dinners when you don’t want to go out to eat, but also don’t have a lot of food at home. It is a staple for postsecondary students living on their own for the first time, busy families, and even working professionals (Chapman 2012:n.p.). Its versatility and accessibility has helped Kraft Dinner to become a representation of Canadian convenience

Regardless the person, everyone still orders from restaurants, or they microwave a frozen dinner meal once in awhile. In contemporary society, it 's much more efficient to order take out rather than to cook and prepare your own food due to the lack of time. Sadly people even forget the taste of fresh, home cooked meals. Nowadays people don’t know what it’s like to sit down and enjoy a nice hearty home cooked meal, instead they’re always on the run grabbing a quick bite here and there. Unfortunately with such busy lives people don’t have the opportunity to watch cooking shows, go to cooking class, or even cook for their children. People just want to come home and relax they don’t want to have to worry about cooking and all the preparation that comes with it, they would much rather order take out and avoid all the hassle of cooking. In Berry Wendell’s Essay “The Pleasures of Eating”, we are given insight on how very little common people know about where their food comes from and what it goes through. “When a Crop Becomes King” by Michael Pollan reveals how corn, a single crop could be involved in such a wide array of industry and be used in almost everything. David Barboza’s article “If You Pitch It, They Will Eat”, focuses on how in modern society advertising is everywhere and it is taking a big role in everyday life. Through the work of Berry, Pollan, and Barboza we are shown that ignorance is a defining human trait.

The All-American meal takes more out of Americans to make then at first glance. Eric Schlosser’s book Fast Food Nation delves deep into the intricate workings of the fast food industry to expose mistreatment and cruelty towards workers in the business, just as Upton Sinclair had done in the early 1900’s regarding the meat packing industry. Schlosser is able to bring light to the darkness behind the All-American meal through extensive research and personal confrontations of which he has high regards for.

Barry is asking the public to take care of their health and learn more about the food industry. He is asking us to participate in food production by growing our own food and preparing our own meals. He suggests we need to buy directly from local farmers. Even though this article was written twenty seven years ago, it is still relevant to today’s society. Wendell Berry's “The Pleasure Of Eating” is a strong article about how and why people take for granted the food they eat. I agree with Barry that eating is a cultural and agricultural act. I also agree that the food industry has fooled us into buying prepared food, and fooled us to believe that chemicals in our food is good for us. However we need to eat responsibly, by knowing where our food comes from. We also need to buy from local farmers, and prepare our own meals. I agree that we need to grow our own food to feel the reward and labor that farmers feel.

Michael Pollan in his book titled ‘The Omnivore’s Dilemma’ takes a critical look at the food culture in the Unites States. According to him, the question that seems to bother most Americans is simply ‘What should we have for dinner today?’ To Pollan, Americans face this dilemma because they do not have a proper tradition surrounding food. ‘The lack of a steadying culture of food leaves us especially vulnerable to the blandishments of the food scientist and the marketer for whom the omnivore’s dilemma is not so much a dilemma as an opportunity; (Pollan). Drive around any reasonably sized town in America, and there will likely be a fast food restaurant. However, it is also probable that there be restaurants lining the streets too. In the short essay “Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko, the author argues that it is difficult to find economical and convenient alternatives to fast-food restaurants. Conversely, grocery stores and sit down restaurants are widespread, providing customers with healthy choices. Grocery stores provide a wide array of healthy foods and ingredients to prepare a meal with. Fortunately, many restaurants will have nutritious options for health conscious individuals. What makes this meal so unique was not as much the item itself, but the way I always chose to eat it. The first step was to pull back the tin foil that’s crinkling sound gave me goosebumps as if I had just listened to Jimi Hendricks play the “Star Spangled Banner” at Woodstock in 1969. I ate the first mouthwatering half of the burrito before removing the rest of the tin foil and emptying the tortilla contents on top of my chips that are complementary with each meal. Using my fingers, I rubbed the tortilla back and forth feeling for any food remaining inside to ensure that it had all ended up in the bowl. I then drenched the now nachos in the famous Kaiser salsa and steaming hot queso. Using a combination of my fingers and the oh so familiar black plastic fork, I proceeded to take my first bite, aroused by the crunch that filled my ears, mixed with the flavors that were taking over every single taste bud in my mouth. Before I knew it, the entire plate was cleared, but it could not have been more satisfying and I could not wait until the next Sunday when this adventure would begin all over

According to DATAMONITOR a market research firm’s Fast Food Industry Profile,” [in] the United States fast food market grew by 0.2% in 2009 to reach a value of $71.4 billion. And, the compound annual growth rate of the market in the period 2005–09 was 3.7%” showing even years after the book was written, fast food continues to take a greater market share of consumer’s food dollars (“Fast Food Industry profile”,2010, pg. 12).

School lunches all around America are not appetizing to the students. According to New York Times, “More than 30 million children trundle through school cafeteria lines every day in the United States and thanks to the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which took effect in 2012, they are no longer served greasy pizza, salty French fries and sauced up chicken wings. Meals must now be lower in fat, calories and sodium and contain lean proteins, more fruits and vegetables and whole grains. And kids from coast to coast are wrinkling their noses.” (Gonchar) This quote is telling the reader that students from all around the United States are disgusted by lunches. They would rather bring a cold lunch instead. At home, I used to get meals that were nutritious. Here, I am lucky to get bread crust. Because of this, I haven’t been attending lunch.

Notably, with technology advances, everything has become so easy and fast such that we all want every other aspect of our lives to assume a similar concept, and fortunately, the fast food restaurants provide a suitable means of satisfying our hungry stomachs as fast and easy as possible. Surprisingly, most people have adapted a lifestyle that incorporates fast food chains as an important element. For instance, instead of making coffee at home in the morning, I buy coffee on my way to college, for lunch, I buy a sandwich or hamburger from a food truck, and in the evening after a tiring exhaustive day, I order pizza for supper from Pizza Hut. Arguably, food take-outs are part my daily routine, which serves the purpose efficiently but barely sufficiently.
