Spies During The Civil War Essay

The name Civil War is misleading because the war was not a class struggle, but a sectional combat, having its roots in political, economic, social, and psychological elements. It has been characterized, in the words of William H. Seward, as the “irrepressible conflict.” In another judgment the Civil War was viewed as criminally stupid, an unnecessary bloodletting brought on by arrogant extremists and blundering politicians. Both views accept the fact that in 1861 there existed a situation that, rightly or wrongly, had come to be regarded as insoluble by peaceful means.

The book Secret Missions of the Civil War, I find important in another way because I learned more about the American Civil War and what happened during that time. For example, I learned that the Confederate Army tried to go to Mexico to establish slavery, but failed because the leader of Mexico during that time was Maximilian 1 that they contacted died when they got there. I also learned that a Union spy named Charles P Stone who was veteran of the Mexican American. The spy Charles P Stone led an attack on the Confederate Army to gain control of their territory, but lost that battle and was eventually captured by the Confederate Army. The book, Secret Missions of the Civil War, impacts me in my life today =because I know the stories of the missions that Confederate spies and Union spies did during the Civil War. I read Tthe book and it explains accounts of spies and the missions they did for the Confederate or the Union states in the Civil War. The book tells impacts me because I know the history of the country and how it became united like it is today. The American Revolution saw the rise of the American spy, and the father of these spies was George Washington, commander in Chief of the Continental Army. The siege of New York demonstrated the importance and dire need for an intelligence to General Washington. Unfortunately, the difficulty, at least initially, lay with finding people willing and able to serve in this manner.

Another important factor was women because during this time, “more than 100,000 northern women took jobs in factories, sewing rooms, classrooms, hospitals, and arsenals” (Goldfield, pg.434). Since many men lost lives during the war, many of these women were put to take their spots. According to Goldfield, the United States Treasury “employed 447 women in the war years” and were also getting the same pay as men did (Goldfield, pg.434). In contrast with the Union, the Confederacy did not face many good things because they were at the loss of the war and people were loosing each other. Goldfield mentions that after 1863, “the defeat infected Confederate politics, ruined the southern economy and eventually invaded the hearts and minds of the southern people” (Goldfield, pg.435).

Espionage at the commencement of the American Civil War was not an organized system; however the war necessitated the development of more structured intelligence systems for both the Union and the Confederacy. By the middle of the war the dimensions of the espionage system had augmented significantly. Thus espionage came to play a critically important role that affected general’s decisions in both the North and the South, ultimately affecting the outcome of the Civil War as a whole.

The United States during the Civil war was a divided nation and filled with gruesome fighting. It hit all parts of the country and brought the fighting right to the back yards of families. While the men of the nation fought the combat war, woman fought different wars in the shadows. Fighting split millions of families up, and it affected woman in multiple ways. Challenges differed for woman from North and South. While some woman’s homes were turned into hospitals, other woman had to learn how to tend to their plantations while their husbands were away fighting. The Civil War started in 1861, and though it was more than a century ago, there is still controversy and many questions arising about the subject. What were they really fighting over? Should the South have been able to succeed? What were the South’s true reasons for succeeding? Was the North’s only reason to go to war to free the slaves? In 1860’s, women were not allowed to join the war, although they could become nurses instead. Women in the North mostly belonged to the Sanitary Commission. It was an organization that traveled to battle to get supplies to soldiers. In my opinion, the sanitary commission was not a good experience since ailments (diseases) could spread in the camps easily. In 1863, Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation, which stated Confederates had to let African Americans out or slavery. Later on, they were acquiesced (accepted) to join the North’s army. Although, if they were captured by the South, they would be killed, but this did not stop their perseverance. I believe this law passed by Lincoln was an excellent idea because African Americans are the same as us, we are all the same human creatures, just a different color; and equality for them should be accepted no matter what. There were spies like Elizabeth Van Lew that would tell others (the North) about what the Confederates were scheduling. She pretended to suffer from a dainty mental illness in order to muster (gather) information. I think that was very sneeky to do, but kids at school do the same concept: act like spies to ahold of rumors and etc. In the book, “Civil War” it states, “Sadly, two of their four sons died before Lincoln’s assassination in 1865…” This shows that Lincoln wasn’t having a peaceful life like people meant have thought, he was also afflicted from family losses too. General Lee sent a note to General Grant while surrounded by Union troops. They met at a house near Hamlet, and Grant approved the surrender of the Confederate Army.

The Civil War were extremely affected the lives of American women. Many handful are disguised as men and jointed the fight, over served aspies and nurses. Many women took the role at home after their husband , brother, and father, were at the war. Thousands of women were enslaved began transition to freedom, beginning new lives surrounded by the war.

The main reason of the tension was said to be the debate of slavery between the North and South, and although some documents support this claim, it is false. The war had been brewing since 1607, before slavery was even introduced to the colonies that would become the United States of America.
