Killer or Friend: a Pitbull In the early morning light a young woman got out of bed proceeded to her routine, which included walking her two pit bulls. That was the last time her family saw her alive and well, at 8:20 on the 14 of December of this year her body was found in a wooded area in Goochland, Virginia. The young woman was Bethany Stephens a 22 year old who had a long life planned out, but too soon it was cut too short. This was not the work of a killer or even a wild animal, but her two pit bull dogs. The police found a gruesome scene, Sheriff Agnew is quoted “It was an absolutely grisly mauling. In my 40 years of law enforcement I've never seen anything quite like it. I hope I never see anything like it again." Sentenced to euthanasia …show more content…
Like most things in America, the Pitt bull has origins in the United Kingdom. The Old English Bulldog was used in the bloody sport of bull baiting, however due to the Cruelty to Animal Act of 1835 the sport died out and ratting took its place. The sport of ratting called for speed and agility from the dogs and the Bulldogs were breed with Terriers to create the first Pit Bull Terrier. The dogs owners made sure the animals had no aggression to humans and would kill the ones that …show more content…
In June 2008 the Netherlands repealed its ban on Pit Bulls because afterwards dog bites rose, now the government is using behavior-based instead of breed- based laws. Just like the Netherlands the U.K. did not see a decrease in dog bites, and made the ownership of Pitt Bulls higher among criminals. In Maryland in 1996 it cost the state over a million dollars to implement a Pitt Bull ban, and the results were unmeasurable. The states or countries that have Pitt Bull bans have to cover the cost of lawsuits and other court dealings. Overtime Pitt Bull bans have proven cost ineffective and cumbersome. In the United States 75% of dogs do not have any traceable linage and BSL is based off of appearances. There is a large inaccurate percentage of dogs are Pitt Bulls or a Pitt Bull mix. Due to the reputation that Pitt Bulls in the media many criminals and gangs believe that these are vicious dogs and banning them just reinforces that stereotype. Reasonable dog owner go through great lengths to make sure their pet is cared for by training, socializing, and managing them. BSL fails to take into account this by solely focusing on appearances, and not the owner or dog. If the owner is a responsible one he or she will have taken the steps that BSL
How often do people walk by a place and see someone getting attacked by a pitbull? Pretty much never. So why ban pit bulls from being pets whenever they don’t do anything to anyone? That’s right, they shouldn’t be banned. Pit bulls should be allowed to be pets because they help children and teens with ADHD, they’re not dangerous if raised properly, and banning pit bulls isn’t going to stop all dog bites.
Did you know that Pit bulls were used to recruit soldiers in World War 1? Pit should not be ban. Pit bulls are used for many good reasons. “Pit bulls became a symbol of american pride and there image was used to recruit soldiers during World War 1.” So many people say pit bulls are bad, but pit bulls can be good the way they are raised depends on how they act and most dogs are used as work dogs so they are treated bad which means they are going to act bad. Pit bulls can be good.
In some cities, pit bulls are illegal to own, and this isn’t fair because Pit Bulls are a good breed of dog, as long as they are treated okay. For example, lets say you own a Husky; you won’t be told by the city that you can’t own that dog, but lets say you own a pit bull. It becomes the other way around. Depending on the city, you won’t be allowed to have your dog. Lets say someone raises a Dalmatian. If they abuse it, or make it fight, that dog will be vicious to anyone just like any other breed of dog would. If you raise the Dalmatian right, and don’t abuse it or make it fight, you will end up with a very loving and very friendly dog. It’s the same way for Pit bulls. Some people have made mistakes and in turn ruined it for pit
According to the Real Pit Bull, Pit bulls date back to the nineteenth century and were first created in England by breeding English Terriers and Bulldogs. Despite their vicious reputation Pit bulls were used as nannies
The breed known as “Pit Bulls” consists of many breeds in the Bull Terrier group. Today these dogs are known for their fighting, biting, and their aggressive behavior. Some of the many stereotypes of these dogs are: “Pit bulls are inherently vicious” (17 Things...). No dog is inherently
IN the passage “Ohio Overturns Pit Bull bIll” It states “You can say all you want about all these other breeds, but ‘pit bulls’ are the choice for drug dealers and other bad folks for a reason.” i think that this is completely false because not all people with pitbulls have to be bad. You may also want to consider changing your mind if you read the passage “Pit bulls haven’t always set a bad rep” it states how in the early 1900s, The pitbull was one of the most popular breeds and how they became a symbol for american
If you raise a dog With whips and chains, of course they're going to be mean and bite. But that is, the owners fault, not the dogs!!! Besides pit bulls aren’t the only dogs that kill there are many dogs that have taken life’s, and you’re just going to get this one dog? Now look I don’t mean take all the dogs out of the U.S.A, I’m simply stating that there are other dogs that hurt to not just one type of dog. Where do the Pit bull’s go? Do you have a certain place for them to go or are you just going, to let the wonder the streets and, possibly letting them get shot by other people? Put yourself in the dog’s shoes, would you like it to be illegal to have a home? To have it illegal to live your life? How would you feel? Pit bulls are the target of breed-specific legislation for years now. Despite proof saying such laws do not stop the
The first reason why i think this pit bulls should not be allowed as pets is because they are dangerous and vicious. Representative Bruce Goodwin stated,” the pit bulls’ has the distinction or characteristic that, when they grab on, they do not let go.” Also the best dog choice for drug dealers and other bad people is a pit bull for a reason that they are vicious.
Maryland has laws on both rulings against just Pit Bulls and the concept of ‘dangerous dogs’. First we will focus primarily on Maryland’s law against Pit Bulls. Aaron C. Davis, a reporter for the Washington Post, states that “Maryland’s highest court ruled in March [of 2012] that pit bulls…are more dangerous than other breeds” (Davis). Even the media today is biased against Pit Bulls based on the immensely smaller number of media articles reported on non-Pit Bulls versus Pit Bulls. The ASPCA, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, shows that a “quantitative study by the National Canine Research Council of dog-bite reportage in a four-day period proves that anti-pit bull bias in the media is more than just a theory—it’s a fact” (ASPCA). Under Maryland law as well, there are specific rulings on what deems a dog as a ‘dangerous dog’. Stated in West’s Annotated Code of Maryland, “‘Dangerous dog’ means a dog that: (i) Without provocation has killed or inflicted severe injury on a person” (West). This could relay onto any breed of dog depending on the situation and environment. Because of the Maryland law on Pit Bulls, many Maryland families are facing distress.
The main reason pit bulls attack is because they are mentally unstable, a mixed breed and show overbearing traits, or because they are mistreated by their owners. The public must understand that the three “pit bull breeds were bred for dog fighting and bear and bull-baiting” (PBRC). On the other hand, they were also kept as “nanny dogs” and used for herding cattle. “Pit bulls are ideal for therapy work because of their pleasant nature” (PBRC). These are three of the most stable breeds known to man. They have a very high temperament test score, 86% as of 2010, a lot higher than most breeds. “The American Pit Bull Terrier is one of the top 5 most stable breeds in the country” (PBRC). Anyone can see that this is an excellent breed of dog. There are a few things that people should know though. “Pit bulls have a lower Tolerance to dogs, but with any breed, a dog’s tolerance changes as they mature” (PBRC). “Maturity can come late with pit bull breeds” (Villalobos Rescue Center). The reason for this low tolerance is because of their history of dog fighting. It has been bred into them to have the will to fight. Pit bulls usually do not start a fight most of the time, but they will not back down or give up. Due to this, owners must be cautious and attentive.
BSL fails at make communities safer from dog bites and attacks. There has been no conclusive data that even suggest that BSL has prevented dog bites or attacks. An Australian study conducted in 2006 entitled, Breed-specific Legislation and the Pit Bull Terrier: Are the laws justified?, concluded that the data collected in the United States to support the theory that pit bulls posed a unique danger to the public is flawed by methodological shortcomings (Breed). What this means is that the statistics of dog bites in the U.S. are inaccurate and flawed. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has reported that it is impossible to
When I say I have a pit bull does that frighten you? For most people, it does, even though it shouldn’t. I feel the dog restrictions in Shullsburg are limiting the lifestyles for both specific dog breeds as well as their owners. Did you know that in a way pit bulls are not even a breed? There are seven different dog breeds that are classified as pits. My puppy, a terrier, lab, retriever, and pit bull mix, is both loving and affectionate, but because she is part pit bull many already have a bad image plastered in their heads without even meeting her. When uneducated people say bad things about pit bulls, it devastates me. My personal opinion to this topic may be different than yours; however, I’m just asking you to have an open-mind and take into consideration what I am saying. Maybe at the end, you will start to feel why I am so heartbroken by what people have said about this specific breed. When people stereotype a pit bull as “vicious” they are limiting the capabilities as well as opportunities for this breed. My dog has to be muzzled, on a four-foot leash and walked by someone 16 years of age or older. At the
Today 's pitbull is a descendant of the English bull baiting dog that was selectively bred to bite and hold large animals by their face and head. In the 1800’s, bull baiting was outlawed, so their owners turned to fighting their pit bulls against each other instead. The dogs were purposely not fed by their owners and thrown into a ring to fight for entertainment and
Will start with their background to inform you what pit bulls are. They are not one specific breed, but a classification of a variety of different
Banning a breed, which the technical words are breed specific legislation, is not a good idea. Putting a ban on pit bulls is a less than great idea because people will continue to own pit bulls and hide them or even abandon their dog(s) and leave them to die. The irresponsible owners should deal with heavier fines and possibly jail time and this might scare these owners into training their pit bull properly. There is no proven fact that banning pit
