The United States has inflicted imperialism on the island of Cuba. This happened on April 25, 1898 after the U.S declared war on Spain for sinking the Battleship Maine in Havana Harbour on February 15, 1898. But before then The United States owned massive amounts of businesses in Cuba. Such as, Cuban sugar, tobacco, and iron industries. There was a very tight bond between the U.S and Cuba. This was all happening when Cuba was under Spanish rule however. Things ended up escalating where newspapers started exaggerating details of what was going on in Cuba. Spain was angry and because of this they sunk the U.S’ Battleship Maine. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. When Spain lost its control over the remaining parts of Cuba because of this the United States took over all resources belonging to Cuba.

We stand for this because number one the United States helped Cuba become free from Spanish rule. Nonetheless, if the United States hadn’t done this Cuba probably would still be own by the Spain or another country. The U.S also had a right to imperialize Cuba because Cuba owed the U.S. The U.S needed resources such as Cuban sugar, tobacco, and iron industries so they could establish and build properties for the U.S. and establish order. The United States imperialized Hawaii and Cuba’s economic, military, and cultural in the late 1800’s. Cuba had been rebelling against Spanish rule for decades and the United States never intruded. America claimed that the reason for their involvement in 1895 was to assist Cuba against Spanish slaughter, but they hadn’t thought about involving themselves until their trade for sugar with Cuba was cut off. The Wilson-Gorman Tariff of 1894 placed high taxes on sugar, destructing Cuba’s sugar market and causing the discontinuation of trade with the United States. Cuba had acted as America’s primary sugar market. President Cleveland and successor, McKinley, desired to stay neutral, but the revealing of the Spanish De Lome letter and the sinking of the Maine in 1898 presented no other option.
The United States embargo of Cuba has its roots planted in 1960, 53 years ago, when “the United States Congress authorized President Eisenhower to cut off the yearly quota of sugar to be imported from Cuba under the Sugar act of 1948… by 95 percent” (Hass 1998, 37). This was done in response to a growing
In 1898, President William McKinley asked congress to liberate Cuba because of our humanity in a country. McKinley said we must help Cuba for they were our next door neighbor and we could “put an end to the barbarities, bloodshed, starvation, and horrible miseries now existing there, and which the parties to the conflicts are either unable or unwilling to stop or mitigate.”(Source 1) In other words, McKinley believed that Cuba deserved the help of the United States because we were the only ones who could help. He unknowingly presented the idea of imperialism to Governor Theodore Roosevelt.

The Treaty of Paris of 1898 outlined these agreements that ended the war. For example, Spain agreed to forfeit their power over Guam and Puerto Rico, giving these territories to the United States. Furthermore, Cuba finally gained its independence from Spain and their government. However, America intervened for three years after they were given freedom. This means that America was involved in Cuba’s government until Cuba added the Platt Amendment in 1901 to their constitution.

This was all about to come crashing down as revolts against Batista occurred and Fidel Castro came to power within Cuba.
Spanish - American WarTopic: Spanish American WarQuestion: How did the Spanish - American war start?Thesis: Getting treated badly by one another. The causes of the Spanish-American War relates directly to Cuba, and the sinking of the ships such as the U.S.S. Maine. 1In 1895, Cuba was extremely out of control and not organized at all , and was beginning to go against Spain. The American people were very disgusted in the way the cuban citizens were treated and by the way the Spanish treat the Cubans in the beginning of the Spanish - American war. The Cuban’s soon adopted a conception that the more damage that they did to the Cuban mainland, the faster the Spanish would leave Cuba, and the Americans would then help the Cubans to win their independence against the Spain. After they win their independence they would then be free without being mistreated by the Spaniards. The Americans soon came to Cuba in a try to help and assist the Cubans in their fight for freedom.2 The Spanish intervention with Cuba threatened the trade routes that America had near, and with Cuba. In 1959, Cubareceived 74 percent of its imports from the US, and the US received 65 percentof Cuba’s exports. On February 3, 1962, the United States imposed a fulltrade embargo on Cuba, completely ending any type of trade between the twocountries. This embargo remains in effect today, more than four decades later, and has grown ! to be a huge center of debate and controversy (DeVarona 8).Opponents to the embargo argue that the embargo does nothing more than hurt theCuban people, while proponents argue that the embargo places pressure on Castroto repair Cuba’s mismanaged and corrupt government. Both the supportersand the opponents of this embargo have strong arguments and evidence to supportthese
After it became officially globally acknowledged that Cuba was in fact a communist state and was being led through a dictatorship run by Castro, it did not take long before powerful enemies and essential allies were formed. The act of seizing all foreign land with none or very little compensation was received with great hostility amongst those who lost in their property through this process, and probably the reaction that had the biggest impact on Cuba’s economy was that of the US. Castro’s communistic policies did not of course help calm this resentment and also took part in leading to the establishment of trade embargos with Cuba from the US. This meant that Cuba would now lose a very valuable buyer of their precious sugar, [5] but they did however gain another one, a powerful nation that shared quite similar Marxist ideals and were quick to form an alliance with the Cubans, the USSR.
