If you ask my friends what I do at my job, they would probably tell you I write, work on lots of secret projects and come home with some amazing beauty products. If you ask them what I used to do for my job as a Leadership Consultant, you’d likely get that I traveled all the time, frequented some of the nation’s most notable destinations and hopped from couch to sleeping porch to air mattress and back. All of the above is true, but none of it quite encompasses what either of the jobs I’ve been fortunate enough to have really entail. My time working for Kappa Kappa Gamma as an LC was so much more than exploring the French Quarter of New Orleans or spending Halloween at Disneyland — but let’s be honest, there were some pretty great perks. I am happy to help a teammate learn more about sorority or fraternity life before sending their kids off to school this fall. There are 25 university pennants I collected over the year that hang at my desk. Whenever someone sees their school, I use that as a moment to create a positive relationship and tell them that I too have enjoyed the beautiful Sarah P. Duke Gardens or Oregon sunsets. I am cultured through travel and have learned everything from how to peel a craw fish to the history of the Harvard Yard. I learned to work hard and long, to run on fumes, to keep moving and to find inner motivation. I don’t need hand-holding. Kappa has prepared me to work unsupervised and to problem solve on my own. I learned to be independent, but also to make friends …show more content…
My interviewer acknowledged the company’s 85 percent female makeup. She asked if I was comfortable working with all women and the strong and diverse personalities that inevitably exist in a female-dominated organization. I smiled, remembering the very special thousands of sisters I had met over the past year, and I told her with full confidence that I was up for the challenge. Being a Field Representative has not just made me a better employee, but a well-rounded person. I love the places I’ve been, the people I’ve met, and the lessons I’ve taken with me. There has been no better experience in my life, and one I will continue to use and cherish
The Greek communities that have risen across the country have created huge impacts on every university that they have established themselves on. Historically, fraternities were designed for students to discreetly meet to discuss issues and host debates that their members believed would be deemed inappropriate by their collegiate faculties. Since their founding, fraternities and sororities have completely revamped their focuses. They are used as social, professional, and honorary organizations that promote many different combinations of community service, leadership, and academic success. The ideas of brotherhood and sisterhood have also transcended the college experience,
Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Incorporated purpose is to be of service to all mankind dealing with critical issues in communities domestically and internationally. What I have grown to understand an envision a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to be, I accredit largely to the ladies of the Gamma Theta chapter. This has the result of attending many of the chapter’s events during my time at Hampton thus far. One of my favorite events was a screening of a documentary Girls Rising. I learned to appreciate every opportunity to learn and gain knowledge because in some parts of the world girls are restricted from receiving an education. A
The first Greek organization to assemble was in 1776 at the College of William and Mary. Fraternities were built to provide friendship and recreation. It has been 239 years since the first fraternity was established and now in 2015, there are 123 fraternities and sororities. There are nine million college students involved in Greek organizations (Glass, Nicole). These members are looking to make friends, to build their resumes, to go to social events, or to learn leadership skills. Each member when joining has the incentive to change some aspect of his or her life (Glass, Nicole). If one has the opportunity to join a Greek life organization he or she should for the reasons of giving back to the community, the higher academic standards, the
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and
Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person’s idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a member of the President’s Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others.

With school well underway for most chapters, now is a good time to remind you — and for you to remind the members of your chapter — that there is no such thing as “Kappa time.” As members, we wear our letters 24/7 and are always expected to uphold Fraternity standards. In this day and age, social media and technology allow bad decisions to go viral overnight. That cannot be ignored. Members can and
An effective leader must have a plan for success. This includes a personal plan of growth as well as a professional plan for improvement. This paper will attempt to highlight my personal strengths and weaknesses as leader, identify the areas needed for improvement, and identify the leadership skills and practices that I will use to become an effective leader. This paper will also give an outline of the goals that I consider a priority and a timeline for this development. The overall result will be an inclusive leadership plan of development that I will use to grow myself as well as any organization that I work for in the future.
According to Webster’s Dictionary, leadership is the power or ability to lead other people, the act or instance of leading. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. To be a great leader many people believe it consists of modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Over the course of me learning how to become a better leader and being in leadership roles, I’ve learned that all these are very necessary to be a great leader.
One major event I was excited to attend with the Phi Theta Kappa was a volunteer trip to Marklund, an organization that provides services to people with developmental disabilities. I was inspired to participate in this event because I enjoy be able to touch other people’s lives and make a personal connection with them. I believe this would have been a good learning experience for me. However, because of my academic class schedule, I was not able to join my team members. Being a member of the Phi Theta Kappa organization and its service opportunities allows me to engage with other notable leaders willing to impact and make a difference in the community. While my schedule is comprised of studying , attending classes and hosting events for Womyn
Is a leader as defined in the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, merely one who leads - synonymous with a boss? Or something more? I believe that a leader is much more than that and can be defined in any number of ways. In attempting to define a leader personally, I will use both myself and others as examples.
First, about my past leadership skills were understanding and gaining knowledge from people. When I was a child, I would always look up to my father and mother as role models to help lead a family together. Both of my parents gave me positive reinforcement in school and out of school so I can be successful in life. I have also taken an interest in
The purpose of this personal assessment is to devalue an incident in which I believe I performed my very best, within my leadership capability, according to organizational policies, and lawful regulatory compliance while protecting cultural competence and our organization from any legal repercussions. Business environment will continue evolve and it is pivotal to the success of the organization that all potential leaders acquire the fundamentals of understanding human behaviors within a multicultural atmosphere. Different situations will arise in which leadership will need to focus on the many aspects of one’s personal beliefs, culture as a whole, and productivity at the least. What is evident is the diversity within
