Monroe Harless is a 12 year old girl who lives in Buford, Georgia with her parents and her brothers. She goes to Jones Middle School, where her favorite subject is Social Studies. She also attends Buford School of Ballet, where she dances ballet, tap, and jazz for their company. A shark attacks Three out of fifteen people every year… Bethany Hamilton, a championship surfer, was one of those unfortunate victims. Bethany was only thirteen when it happened; it was just a normal October morning at the beach, until tragedy struck. A fifteen-foot long tiger shark tore Bethany’s arm off, she was later brought to the local hospital. Bethany lost half of her blood, but she survived. But, there was a long road of recovery for Bethany, but no matter what happened she wanted to get back to the water. Bethany worked hard and showed great resilience during recovery in order to achieve her dreams of getting back to the water, and start surfing again.

On October 31, 2003 Bethany Hamilton, a thirteen- year old girl from Hawaii, was in an accident that would change her life forever. That sunny Halloween morning, after three consecutive days of rain, Bethany, a competitive surfer, was itching to get back into the water. Along the way to Pauaeaka Beach in Kauai, Bethany convinced her mother to stop and check out the waves at Tunnel Beach. While the waves were not so impressive, Bethany decided to stay and surf when her best friend and surf buddy, Alana Blanchard, pulled up with her family. Sophia Alcorn was born in Stanton, Kentucky on August 3, 1883. Her parents are James Walker Alcorn and Sophie Ann Kindrick. Sophia was often called Annie by her family. She married James N. Saunders, who practiced law for her father’s office, in November 1899. She was the youngest of her siblings. When she was old enough to attend college, she decided to attend Ward Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee to receive her BA in teaching. After she left Ward Seminary she went to receive training from Northampton, Massachusetts for teaching the deaf. After she received her training for teaching the deafblind, she went to Wayne University received her M.A. degree for teaching, where she later became the principle after her graduation. She is most recognized for her Tad-Oma Method.
Lydia Mason is 57 years old and lives in Baltimore, Maryland. She took a Women’s Studies class in 1979 at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. At the time, Women’s Studies was the most interesting class out there. It was very popular amongst young people. “Everybody took it,” she said “girls and boys. Everyone wanted to know more about it.” This positive attitude towards the history of women’s suffrage continued until around fifteen years later. Then, the term feminist started to become something with which people did not want to associate themselves. “In the late eighties I would start to hear people say ‘You know, I’m not a feminist, but…’ and then follow it up with something that I personally believed to be a feminist thought. And I still hear that today.”

Sophia Amoruso’s story is not ordinary, she struggled with direction and focus issues since she was a child to throughout her teens and early twenties.
