Margaret Lea Houston (April 11, 1819 – December 3, 1867) was First Lady of the Republic of Texas, First Lady of the state of Texas, and a founding member of Concord Baptist Church in Grand Cane. She was a poet and an accomplished musician. Her influence on husband Sam Houston persuaded him to give up alcohol and profane language. Hannah Senesh was born in Budapest, Hungary, on July 17, 1921. She had a younger brother and her parents were an author and a journalist. She was always very talented in writing. Throughout her life, she kept a diary and wrote many poems. She was Jewish, and in 1939, she moved to Israel with her brother because of anti-semitism in Hungary. In Israel, she attended an agricultural school, and later settled at the Kibbutz Sdot Yam. Hannah Senesh was brave, and stood her ground for what she thought was right. She did what she knew what good for other people, even if it hurt her.

It was a privilege to listen to Stephanie Garrison share her story and provide encouragement for our own lives. Personally, I found it very admirable how willing she was to share and be vulnerable. Carrie Amelia Moore thought that drinking caused most of the problems in the world. She was against alcohol and she started trying to get it to be banned. Carrie is known for carrying a hatchet with her that helped her smashed public places. She kept thinking that god wanted her to travel around and get people to see the way she saw the problems of alcohol. She did speeches, used violence, and she was a member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union who was known most from all of the other people who were in there..

Ann Deborah Lynn knew she was born to be leader despite her circumstances as an African American in Lexington, Kentucky. Born October 3, 1810 to William Henry Lynn and Sarah Mae Lynn, her vision to be an inspiring Civil Rights Activist would be the biggest challenge of her life. Her father, William was a slave captured in Angola, Africa in broad daylight and her mother, Sarah was a daughter of slaves from Guinea. Free blacks in the South couldn’t express how they felt and wasn’t able to travel as freely as the free slaves in the Northern cities. The North also had more to offer because they were becoming more urban which meant better jobs, transportation and growing middle-class. Barbara Jordan was born on February 21, 1936 in Houston Texas. She was the youngest child of three. Her father Benjamin Jordan was a Baptist minister and warehouse clerk. Her mother, Arlyne was a maid, housewife and church teacher. Jordan went to college at the University of Texas. She graduated from college being one out of two African American women in her class. Jordan passed away from viral pneumonia on January 17, 1996. Barbara Jordan is a modern here because she is a brave woman, she overcame racism, she is also a civil rights activist.

Beth Brown is an African American woman who studied astrophysics. Astrophysics is an area of science which applies physical laws discovered on Earth to phenomena throughout the cosmos. Cosmos is the world or universe regarded as an orderly, harmonious system (Dictionary.com). Beth is a very appreciated and inspiring astronomer. An astronomer is an expert in or student of astronomy. She was an inspiration to women and minorities in encouraging them to pursue their careers in astronomy/physics. Beth Brown died at the age of 39 due to a pulmonary embolism. When she died, the astronomical community lost one of its most buoyant and caring individuals (Bregman 1).

I, Ella Dutton, have officially been a “lifer” at St. Anne’s. From Pre-K to eighth grade, I have continued to be a contributing member of the community. Throughout the years, I have been a tour guide, led an activity period, been a member of Tech Crew, and participated in as many sports as possible, been in three drama productions. I’ve also made many amazing friendships with people who I never thought I would be friends with. At St. Anne’s, I have learned everything from diagramming sentences to how to strive to be the best person I can be. It has definitely been a long, but wild ride at St. Anne’s.

Many people haven’t had the pleasure of knowing Hannah Hardiman. Unfortunately, some people never will; hopefully this interview will help shed some light on what a wonderful and interesting life Hannah leads.

Who am I? I’m just your run-of-the-mill college student trying to find what I want to do with my life in the shortest amount of time possible. Though, I cannot say that is the most logical thing to do, but in this day and age, what is? I grew up in this city, Harrisburg, living the typical life as the timid, unapproachable Hispanic boy in, what you could, not the best social or emotional environments. Nevertheless, I managed to maintain exceptional grades and an obedient model student, which teachers commended as “good” behavior. Maintaining the façade of a completely focused and driven student with his whole life planned ahead of him. As I continued to grow and mature, I maintained this routine, which served well throughout school and home life—finding the quickest solutions for the obstacles that stood in my way—however it was swiftly dismantled as I entered adult life and faced questions that have been put of my mind. What are you going to do with your life? Are you making the right decisions? Are you going to do something, or do you want to fall behind?
