Josh Ritter’s song, Kathleen, consists of several writing techniques that Forsyth defined as rhetorical figures. Some of the devices that stood out amongst the rest of the lyrics include anaphora and epistrophe. All songwriters’ dilemmas consist of putting together lyrics that serve as a direct link from their brain to the listeners’ brain. Not only does the song have to be meaningful and contain the general idea of the composer’s purpose, but it also has to be orchestrated in such a way that demonstrates some sort of rhyme in order to be classified as a good song; this piece by Ritter is not an exception. Apart from the many end rhymes found throughout this song, the assonances, such as the sound of “ee” in “we meet’s” (21) and “ay” in “way

“Out of the Dust” written by Karen Hesse is a poem about a girl named Billie Jo, who leaves home, hoping to get away from her father and the dust storms. Throughout this piece of literature, Karen Hesse explains the experience of Billie Jo and how she felt that night when she was all alone: “I walk through the calm night/under the stars./I walk to/where the train stops long enough/for a long-legged girl to latch on.” Specific words are written on their own personal line to show emphasis on how Billie Jo felt and how she was isolated in the darkness of the world. Various lines, have different sentence lengths so that the reader can identify if the subject of the poem is experiencing different emotions.
Would you ever think an indigenous poem about nature would have any similarities with a short story that is set later on in the future, where everybody is dependent on technology? “The Song My Paddle Sings” is by an early 1900s indigenous poet, Pauline Johnson, and “The Pedestrian” is written by early 2000s writer, Ray Bradbury. The short story and the poem both establish a very determined, lonely, anxious and gloomy mood. “The Song My Paddle Sings” is an indigenous poem that exemplifies to stay determined in every journey in life. The poem is about a man who goes sailing but there is no wind, so then he has to take down the sail and start canoeing but then the water gets faster and he accepts that he has to change for nature. Consequently
Initially, Collins demonstrates how one can weigh a dog’s weight with his method. Concrete diction in the first stanza, such as, “ small bathroom”, “ balancing”, and “shaky” suggest the uncomfortable nature of his intimate relationship with his pet. Although Collin is unappreciated for the gritty toil determination, he praise himself to applauded that “this is the way” and raising his self-esteem by comparing how easier it is than to train his dog obesity. In addition, the negative diction used to describe Collin holding his dog to be “awkward” for him and “bewildering” for his pet. This establish he rather force love rather willing show patience. When holding a pet on scale, there is less hustle because he secures the dog’s position by carrying it. Where as when he orders the dog to stay on the weighing scale with a cookie, his dog only followed him because of the expected reward.

When I think of a poet, images of scowling, mustached men whose 19th century wardrobe could use an update spring to mind—a somber Edgar Allen Poe type whose ink strokes inquire of unrequited love interests and dreary days alone in the snow. I certainly do not imagine modern, multi-ethnic women who live in the same state as me. However, as soon as I read Natasha Trethewey’s poetry, I immediately admired the way her words so effortlessly danced on the page, my mind’s eye watching the elegant choreography with each syllable read. Moreover, when I learned of her tragic history, and the strength and resilience she possessed to carry on, I could not help but to respect the way she turned pain into beautiful art. The right words carry great power
After the long process of thinking of ideas on which to write this last essay on, I decided I would re-write the poem Girl by Jamaica Kincaid. I decided to re-write the poem from the words of a father towards his son as opposed to the words of a mother to her daughter depicted in the original piece. In my piece, I mimicked Kincaid in sentence structure and flow while swapping genders and keeping the overall meaning and significance to family.
INTRO: Amanda-This is our illustration of Billie Jo drawn by Kaitlyn and Bryan. We drew her with Red hair, freckles, narrow hips, long legs, and a wide mouth. We drew her like this because in the text on page 3 it says “ Instead, he got a long-legged girl with a wide mouth and cheekbones like bicycle handles. He got a redheaded, heckle-faced, narrow-hipped girl”.
Miss Temptation starts with the introduction of a young actress named Susanna. Susanna is obviously a beautiful young woman who stands out in a crowd. She’s described as someone who dresses with big hoops and chains with bells around her ankles. She seems to dress and act for attention. By describing her as a young beautiful woman, who can be assumed to be a giant flirt. This also can be assumed as Vonnegut making “a promise to you that this story will lead somewhere that's worth your time” (Stanton 4:29). Specifically a promise that deals with Susanna and her sexualism or how other people interpret her.
Artist, Kesha, co-wrote and sang the song titled “Praying.” In the video that she created for the song she shows us, the audience, what she went through during her healing process from the sexual and mental violence she received. The woman being described in Maxine’s poem is confident in her own skin, where Maxine says, “The woman I am in my dreams, is taller than I am, she sees the world as she walks” this suggests that the woman always has her head up high and takes in the world as she walks. The woman wears red “spike heels” and “that woman walks only when she feels like not running, not jogging” would suggest the woman is physically capable of both running and walking. The verse “they don’t hide under long skirts; her legs and feet are well” would elude that the woman in the poem isn’t afraid to show off her legs which would support the idea that she is physically able.
Nikki Giovanni gained most of her fame during the 1960s and 1970s, when she was expelled from her college and started exploring and investigating the world. She is well known for her more militant and violent poetry during that time period, but now she has become a more personal poet. A quote said by her could relate exactly to her themes in poetry and life. “A lot of people resist transition and therefore never allow themselves to enjoy who they are. Embrace the change, no matter what it is; once you do, you can learn about the new world you're in and take advantage of it.” As of today, she is seen as one of the most influential African American women in the world. Some may say that Nikki Giovanni’s change in style and themes in her poems from militant and harsh, to emotional and family-oriented were linked to the emotional changes in her life.
Richard Blanco is a Cuban- American poet who was given the oppurunity to write an inaugaration poem for Barack Obama's second swearing-in. When listening to ‘Let Her Go’ you are bombarded with the quick realization about what you have in life and how fortunate you are until it is all gone. People and life in this day and age are just constantly going with no pauses and no time to appreciate all of the astonishing things you have in life until they are dissipated , and when this realization comes the effects of it are more abundant. People take for granted how good they Genuinely have it, and they tend to focus on what is happening next week or next month and all the hustle and bustle of life instead of looking at what they hold right in front of them. And when what is right in front of them departs or is seized from their life, they do not realize how fortuitous they were until it is gone. The speaker has a clear and
The poem Medusa explores the theme of jealousy and anger; the poet illustrates this using the extended metaphor of a Greek mythological creature Medusa, whose story describes her as a beautiful maiden that is turned into a hideous creature after being raped by Poseidon. The poet furthermore links this metaphor to the theme of feminism when she describes the women in the poem overpowering the man that hurt her.
