SHREVEPORT, La. – For his play this past week in helping Centenary baseball win it’s first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament title, junior Chris Zapata has been named to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week as a catcher for the second time this season.
This past weekend as the top seed in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, the Gents beat Southwestern 6-4 on Friday before knocking off Trinity 5-3 on Saturday in the winner’s bracket final. In the championship, Centenary fell to Trinity 10-9 in the first game before knocking off the Tigers 13-3 in seven innings in the if necessary game.
Zapata, who was recognized as SCAC Player of the Year on Friday, had a Championship Sunday to remember, going 4-for-9 with two home runs, a double, three runs scored and seven RBI’s. His only hit in game one was a home run to

Zapata added an RBI double in the fourth, finishing the game a triple short of the cycle and 3-for-4 with five RBI’s and two runs scored in the final game of the tournament.
While his first home run on Sunday broke the 27-year old record single-season record for RBI’s (Todd Wilson, 64, 1990), his grand slam broke the 23-year old record for career RBI’s (Brian Steier, 1992-94, 139). Zapata now has 71 RBI’s for the season (sixth in SCAC single-season record book) and 141 for his career.
Zapata tied the Gents single-season RBI record in Friday’s 6-4 win against Southwestern, and finished the tournament 8-for-16 and eight RBI’s, three runs, three doubles, and two home runs.
Centenary baseball will make its first NCAA Tournament appearance Thursday, May 18, at a site and time to be announced (most likely in Tyler, Texas). Location and playing time details will be released by the NCAA on May
The first three Gents in game two loaded the bases, and sophomore Chris Zapata blasted the first pitch he saw into the batter’s eye in centerfield to break the career record for RBI’s as Centenary (34-18) run-ruled Trinity (28-16) 13-3 to win the 2017 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Sunday afternoon, April 30 at AirHogs Stadium in Grand Prairie, Texas.
Trailing 5-3 in the sixth inning, freshman Ashlin Roach and senior Brianna Williams doubled and singled to put runners on the corners and end the day for the Centenary starter, Haley Miller. Zapata earned Second Team All-Conference for the second-straight season. He leads the team in RBI’s (39), doubles (15) and home runs (four). Zapata’s .325 batting average sits fourth on the team this season. He easily leads the conference from behind the dish in runner caught stealing percentage (40.9) in the SCAC.
The Lady Panthers amassed a record of 31-14 during their historic season with playoff wins against: Houston Yates, Bridge City, Hudson, Robinson, Lorena, and Beeville A.C. Jones high schools. On June 2, 2018, the Lady Panthers defeated the Vernon Lady Lions by a score of 3-1 at the University of Texas’ McCombs Field. ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Grant Ashline’s (Rollins) two-out single to right field in the 13th inning, scored Chris Townsend from second base, in Altamonte Springs 3-2 victory over the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs, at Alfond Stadium, Friday night. The run held up, as Mitch McCarthy (Seminole State) earned his third win on the season, and move the Boom within one-half game of first place Sanford River Rats.
Green Run Stallions would kick off the second half of their season against the Indian River Braves. Just as tip-off was commencing news broke that Green Runs’ Shawn Sanders won Buffalo Wild Wings player of the week for his 40 point performance in the Norfolk Scope Classic.
Koepp began the week collecting a key RBI is Calaveras’ come-from-behind victory over the Linden Lions. She also scored a run in the 10-7 win. Against Bret Harte, Koepp had a monster day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a double, eight runs batted in and two runs scored. And against Argonaut, Koepp picked up another hit and stole a base.
Despite being ranked #16 Perfect Game, the Gents are not yet in the top-25 in the D3Baseball.com poll. However, Centenary received 28 points in the poll to be the top “Also Receiving Votes” team in the SCAC. Trinity received 26 votes, while Texas Lutheran garnered three votes.
Going 1-1 on the first day of the SCAC Tournament, defeating #5 Southwestern but falling to #1 Texas Lutheran, Centenary returns to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against #6
SHREVEPORT, La. – Despite the steady rain falling all day, the Gents offense failed to cool off as they scored 31 runs as Centenary (13-3) took game one 19-2 and beat Northland College (0-2) 12-2 in a pair of run-ruled, seven-inning games Sunday, March 5.
The #8 Centenary Gents (20-3, 6-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) will put its program-best 13-game winning streak on the line when it welcomes the Dallas Crusaders (8-15, 2-4 SCAC) to Shehee Stadium for a three game series Saturday and Sunday, March 26-27. First pitch is scheduled at 1 p.m. both days, with a doubleheader scheduled on Saturday.
The Mountaineers (36-22) overcame an 8-0 deficit in the first two and a half innings to take a 10-9 lead in the bottom of the fifth. That lead stood until the ninth inning until TCU (42-15) tied the game.
Votto continues to be one of the best bats in Major League baseball. He .314 in 2015 with 29 home runs and 80 RBI. Votto hit.326 last season despite starting slowly. He was hitting .215 on June 1. The last 104 games Votto hit .378 and nearly became the first player since 2010 to hit over .400 in consecutive months, .419 in July and .394 in August/ He finished with 29 home runs for the second straight season.
The Gents played a closer game then they are used to in the series finale, but the Maroon and White never trailed in the series as Centenary (16-3, 3-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) swept a doubleheader with a 12-0 win (seven innings) in game one and 9-6 in game two.
But as important as Rizzo has been, nobody has been more important than the pitching staff of the Chicago Cubs.
