Argumentative Essays: Is Banning Soda a Bad Idea? “Bloomberg is playing nanny in the worst sort of way by interfering in a basic, private transaction involving a perfectly legal substance” (“Soda’s a Problem but…” page 288). Klein, the author of “Soda’s a Problem but…,” is saying that Bloomberg is trying to lessen health problems but in the worst way. There is a lot of controversy on if it's a good or bad idea to have the soda ban. The soda ban is a good idea, for it helps limit the amount of soda a person can purchase and assists the person in making the better choices for their health. According to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the same article, “ People who drink this ‘liquid candy’ do not feel as full as if they had eaten the same calories from solid food and do not compensate by eating less.” Limiting the amount of something a person shouldn’t consume in great quantities is important because as people drink more and more soda, they don’t feel as full since it’s not a solid with the equivalent amount of calories. This then leads people to drink more which causes them to obtain unnecessary calories that they can’t burn in time. Harvard also states that “People who consume sugary drinks regularly… have a 26% greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes…, 20% higher risk of having a heart attack or dying from a heart attack than men who rarely consumed sugary drinks…, 75% higher risk of gout than women who rarely had such drinks.” This supports the claim because they’re saying that people who drink soda on a daily bases are more prone to diseases than people who rarely drink these sugary drinks.
