Person: A person should not have to suffer near the end of their life
Socrates: Suffer in what way?
Person: With pain and agony.
Socrates: Well there is medicine that can relieve this pain.
Person: Yes but that does not always work. Or it does not do enough to relieve the pain.
Socrates: Well what else can be done to help that person?
Person: I just believe that people should have the right to die with dignity at the end of their life.
Socrates: How are we to give them this right?
Person: Physician-assisted suicide or euthanasia.
Socrates: What exactly is the definition of these methods?
Person: Euthanasia is the act of bringing about the death of a hopelessly ill and suffering person in a relatively quick and painless way for reasons of mercy. The difference between euthanasia and PAS is that in PAS, the physician provides the …show more content…

Person: Simple. Physicians have an obligation to relieve pain and suffering and to promote the dignity of dying patients in their care. They must also respect the patients’ decisions to forgo life-sustaining treatment.
Socrates: Don’t you think there could be a chance that the patient could be confused and not truly know what they want? This could lead to them making a decision they made by mistake.
Person: Absolutely. But there are protocols a physician must follow when approached with this kind of request that can ensure that the patient really wants to go forth with it
Socrates: This is a lot of power for the physician. How do you know this power would not be abused?
Person: It is very possible to regulate euthanasia and enforce protocols and standards. I will admit, though, that it won’t be able to deal with those that want to use euthanasia for bad or selfish reasons, but some rules are better than none. Euthanasia occurs illegally in many places so it would much better and safer if there some sort of laws and regulations for
