Person: A person should not have to suffer near the end of their life
Socrates: Suffer in what way?
Person: With pain and agony.
Socrates: Well there is medicine that can relieve this pain.
Person: Yes but that does not always work. Or it does not do enough to relieve the pain.
Socrates: Well what else can be done to help that person?
Person: I just believe that people should have the right to die with dignity at the end of their life.
Socrates: How are we to give them this right?
Person: Physician-assisted suicide or euthanasia.
Socrates: What exactly is the definition of these methods?
Person: Euthanasia is the act of bringing about the death of a hopelessly ill and suffering person in a relatively quick and painless way for reasons of mercy. The difference between euthanasia and PAS is that in PAS, the physician provides the

Person: Simple. Physicians have an obligation to relieve pain and suffering and to promote the dignity of dying patients in their care. They must also respect the patients’ decisions to forgo life-sustaining treatment.
Socrates: Don’t you think there could be a chance that the patient could be confused and not truly know what they want? This could lead to them making a decision they made by mistake.
Person: Absolutely. But there are protocols a physician must follow when approached with this kind of request that can ensure that the patient really wants to go forth with it
Socrates: This is a lot of power for the physician. How do you know this power would not be abused?
Person: It is very possible to regulate euthanasia and enforce protocols and standards. I will admit, though, that it won’t be able to deal with those that want to use euthanasia for bad or selfish reasons, but some rules are better than none. Euthanasia occurs illegally in many places so it would much better and safer if there some sort of laws and regulations for
Euthanasia is the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma. Euthanasia is referred to the
Presence of a Duty of care: Physicians have a responsibility to treat people in a medically- appropriate manner.
A physician cannot force a patient to undergo a procedure or treatment against his or her will. Physicians must make informed refusal an integral part of their informed consent process. Physician should understand what patients' needs and balance between the psychological need and social and physical health. Sometimes, the stress environment of the doctor made him frustrated and they don't spend enough time with their patient to get the optimum information and don't show interest about patients’ psychosocial problems. When a patient feel that their doctors have a lack of knowledge of other treatment options may also contribute to why patients refuse our treatment plan. Good physician-patient relationship allows a trusting relationship to develop. Most patients will agree to doctors’ treatment strategies if they have a good communication and patients are kept fully informed by their
Physician-assisted suicide or PAS for short is one of the most controversial subjects we as a society discuss. Not only is it a controversial subject, but an ethical dilemma faced by patient and physicians alike. There are two types of terms associated with this type of death, physician-assisted suicide, and euthanasia. PAS is a term to describe a death where a physician prescribes a medication that is administered to the patient to assist in ending one’s life. As for
Euthanasia means to bring death and end all suffering for an ill person in a quick and painless way.
Physician-Assisted Suicide which is also known as PAS has been a topic that has been highly debated for years, it gives patients in critical medical conditions the right to end their lives. Many people think that PAS and euthanasia are the same, while both actions include medications in lethal doses, Physician Assisted Suicide is when a doctor makes a patient’s death less difficult by providing him or her with a lethal dose of medication such as barbiturates or a combination of medications to allow the life ending act or to refrain the patient from receiving treatments that are used to prolong a terminally ill patients life. The physician lends the knowledge but the person does the act. While, euthanasia is when someone actually administers
In today's society, one of the most controversial issues is physician-assisted suicide for the terminally ill. Many people feel that it is wrong for people, regardless of their health condition, to ask their health care provider to end their life; while others feel it is their right to be able to choose how and when they die. When a physician is asked to help a patient into death, they have many responsibilities that come along with that single question. Among those responsibilities are: providing valid information as to the terminal illness the patient is suffering, educating the patient as to what their final options may be, making the decision of whether or not to help the patient into death, and also if they do decide to help,
Socrates’ argues that his unfortunate sentence to death may actually be a blessing. During his monologue to those who have acquitted him, Socrates explains that the divine voice which warns him of harmful actions was silent during the trial. This silence, to Socrates, means that his actions were not potentially harmful to himself and therefore a direct message from the divine. He concludes that death is blessing due to the divine silence and that any good man should not fear death because either by complete annihilation or transmigration their life will be better.
Euthanasia seems a small word but actually is world in itself. It is concerned with the life and death of living creatures. When a person kills another painful person in order to bring him out from the painful situation, then the term is called euthanasia. Euthanasia comes from the Greek words, ‘EU ' meaning ‘good ' and ‘THANATOS ' meaning ‘death '. Bringing these together, euthanasia means ‘the good death ' (Chao). Euthanasia is an act of killing someone in order to relieve their pain.
Euthanasia, often called "mercy killing", is the act of putting to death someone suffering from a painful and prolonged illness or injury. Euthanasia means that someone other than the patient commits an action with the intent to
“The very success of his esoteric therapeutics too often leads the physician to believe he can do what is beyond his doing and save those who, left to their own unhindered judgement, would choose not to be subjected to his saving.” (Nuland 1993 221) I was bothered by reading this quote because it makes an issue arise. I will describe this issue and how I relate to it.
Inexperience and ignorance are two factors that can result in unintentional harm to a patient. For instance, foolish mistakes made out of
The legalization of euthanasia has always been a highly debatable topic since it causes philosophical, religious, moral and ethical controversy where some people believe it reduces our respect for the value of human life and it will be a gateway for other immoral actions to be normalized even though it is a basic human right that patients all over the world are denied to this day.
Soon the principle of autonomy gained primacy over paternalistic practices. The principle of autonomy gave patients the right to make decisions on their own behalf. This shifted power and control from physicians to patients, allowing them to refuse treatment and do things that might not be in their best interest. This brings up the debate of resuscitation. Autonomic practices obligate physicians to honor patients’ preferences, including their desire not to be resuscitated. This ethical dilemma often crosses paths with the principle of beneficence. This principle states that we should act in ways that promote the welfare of other people. However, in the event of no resuscitation, a physician is unable to help other people when given the
