Sociological analysis of the Titanic When researching movies for my paper, I decided that the Titanic was the perfect option. Being that the movie was based on the true event of the RMS Titanic sinking, I knew I could also find a lot of research during the time of the Titanic to help strengthen my paper. The movie Titanic took place in the early 1900’s, a time rich in sociological issues. Their way of life was a lot different than ours today. Some major sociological concepts that were shown several times in the movie were, social stratification, gender inequality and sexism, inequality of income, and discrimination. During this time period people faced huge gaps in wealth, gender, class, and race. Gaps between the rich and poor were extreme. The wealthy were rich and the poor were in poverty. The “middle class” was not a common standing within society: you were either upper or lower class. It was very difficult to rise above the lower class standing, and easier to fall below the upper class line (Prezi web). Men dominated in almost all social standings; voting, ownership of land, professions, wealth, etc. Women were still viewed as “property” and in most ways, treated as such. The gap between the upper and lower class caused discrimination amongst them. Lower-class was treated poorly by the upper-class and seen as less worthy. My favorite history experience has to do with the movie called “The Titanic.” Not just the movie but the actual event happening. I wish I could have been there and survived the experience to be able to tell the amazing, life changing story. The movie and the actual sinking of the ship affected me in many ways. I think it also affected the way we make our boats today. The Titanic is different from the other ships because, they thought that the Titanic was unsinkable. “It’s another ice burg warning…the captain had seemed quite unconcerned” on 106 and 107 so they aren’t worried that they will not hit the ice burg and sink because those people don’t think it can sink. “There was much talk among the passengers about the Titanic being unsinkable.” On 105 so they aren’t worried that the boat will sink. “Nicknamed the Unsinkable ship” on page 102 it even says unsinkable
The sinking of the Titanic was a tragedy that had an impact for the entire world. To this day, everyone is familiar with the event. It’s no wonder why mention of the ship would incite a certain dread in the hearts of those who lay their eyes on it. The title, “Titanic” (391), however, is a mere decoy. It’s a tool used to set up the ironic tone of the poem. This is made clear through the rather blunt first line, “Who does not love the Titanic?” The word “love” is a rather explicit word used to describe the world’s reaction toward the vessel for years to come. However, class issue has always been an important element of this film throughout its plots. From the very beginning, the distinct dressings of different figures, the different ways of getting aboard by the people from disparate social class, and the lice test to the third deck passengers are all putting an emphasis on class gap. Hence, Cameron has already set up a base to this movie from its first few minutes, which is the dramatic class gap. The reason I described it as dramatic is that we had never been able to realized if there is the middle class. We can only recognize the first class and the third class. Obviously, Cameron introduces a dramatic contrast on class difference in order to draw our attention to class gap effortlessly. Therefore, this movie seems to commemorate this historical tragedy and let us appreciate the epic love story of Jack and Rose, but it also intend to let us think about how does the social class influence individuals.

The Titanic movie begins with a salvage crew looking throughout the debris of the huge ship, in the hope to find a blue shiny diamond that is called “the heart of the ocean”. They instead find a photograph of a young lady wearing the diamond around her neck. That lady was Rose Dawson; while she was watching Tv, she sees her photograph and sets off to find the man who found it, then she joins them on their ship and the story of the Titanic ship begin. The story starts talking about two fictional characters, Rose and Jack, and their brief love affair aboard the ill-fated ship. Rose is an upper-class woman born into high society; Jack is an aimless drifter of much lesser means. While their love story, and the ship's sinking, are the main plot, this film depicts the glaring differences between the social classes both in how they live and how they are treated. The author mentioned that the Titanic displays in a dominated ideology since it is not focused on one audience but, it concerns about many audiences, which includes lower, middle and upper classes. Basically, the movie shows how the lower class struggle against with upper class and love overcome everything eventually. Even though this movie is a love and romantic story, the presentation of racial discrimination, and race throughout the movie. In this movie, I will argue two sociological themes. Social satisfaction and race play a big role in the movie Titanic. The Titanic movie demonstrates the ideology of race and class.
The movie I have chosen for my review paper is Schindler 's List. The film was directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg. Schindler 's List is an American made movie although it was filmed in Poland. I chose this movie because I am interested in history and in World War 2. The setting takes place primarily in Krakow, Poland during World War 2 (1939-1945). Poland was under German occupation at the time. The setting of the film shows us the Holocaust and the mistreatment of the Jews. This makes it of historical importance in understanding its social stratification value. It was especially important to Steven Spielberg because he is also Jewish and his family has direct ties to the Holocaust. The social stratification concepts I chose are social differentiation, social inequality, and the stratification systems. Specifically the slave and social class systems. Social Stratification is defined as “A form of inequality in which categories of people are systematically ranked in a hierarchy on the basis of their access to scare but valued resources.” (Thompson, Hickey 199). Concepts of social stratification revolve around inequality, differential treatment, and unequal access to wealth, power, and prestige. The plot of the movie revolves around these concepts with the differential treatment of the Jews by the Nazi Germans. This is what makes these stratification concepts sociologically important. The plot shows how the Jews were stripped of their wealth, power, and prestige.
The Titanic movie is what mainly inspired me to do a project such as this one because it had it all about social class and its rankings. The upper class living on the top floor,the middle living in the middle floor, and the working class obviously working down below for any money they could receive. This movie to me shows how to the social rankings of the classes appear today and how the demeanor of the social rankings have never changed to this day.
The Titanic may be one of the most famous and well known shipwrecks of our time. Just about everyone learns of the tragedy in school and how it was a complete accident. Information has been found that point to the tragedy not being what we think it is. There is evidence that shows that the ship thought to be the Titanic may actually be named the Olympic, and may have been used in an insurance scam. This evidence includes pictures showing different amounts of port holes and even people working on the ship coming forward. It has yet to be proven if this is 100% true, but most would agree that all of this points to it being true.
Within the context of film industry, the film Titanic by James Cameron belongs to epic romance/ disaster genre. The film, released in 1997, was a global box office hit because the director provided equal importance to history, fiction and romance. To be specific, one can see that the film’s plot is based upon the history of RMS Titanic. On the other side, the main characters including the protagonist and the heroine (Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater/Dawson) are fictional characters. Besides, the element of romance between the main characters (Jack and Rose) is the film’s main attraction.
