"Social media is a constantly used source to keep up to date with current events. These events could range from reading about a recent robbery to seeing a friend posting pictures from an event. Sometimes, we may post things we regret online and shortly after, we delete them. However, are they actually deleted? Most may assume not; that the social media site keeps records of everything posted. What if it wasn’t just the social media site keeping all of your pictures, posts, and web history? Although every social media site has record of every post ever made, our government has a record of them as well; stored in a building called the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress is the oldest research library that serves the United States Congress. Recently, the library decided to start archiving all tweets since March of 2006. Our government isn’t the only one, however, that is monitoring and archiving our online activity. China has a system within their government to monitor all searches and even restrict and ban certain actions on the web. With the control that our governments have over our online activity, how will this affect our future beings and lifestyles? Will it become too much for our society to handle and create a protest or will we simple abide by the rules? In the articles, Library of Congress Preserving Our Social Media Legacy, How Does China …show more content…
There are a lot of different things social media is used for, like catching up with old friends, or the current events going on around us. Sometimes social media is used to plan out protests, terrorist attacks, and things of that nature. We do not have privacy at all, the government is always watching. Even though having our every technological move monitored seems threatening, it definitely has its advantages. They have access to evidence of cyber harassment, prevention of cruel leaked information, and
Leading into this, Social media isn't even safe anymore. You now always have to watch what you do on social media, one mistake can lead to a horrible life or years. One the same side, just different and a statistic, the article "Are You Being Watched?", also tells us about tracking out social medias. " A recent study found that 75 percent of the 500 most popular websites use tracking tools... Tracking is legal, but the idea that our online activities are being recorded to upsetting to many Americans.
In the book 1984, the government has control over all media “and so it was with every class of recorded fact, great or small. Everything faded away into a shadow-world in which, finally, even the date of the year had become uncertain” (Orwell 37). Due to the party’s restraint of all media, there are no actual certainty of written records. Without written records, no one knows if the government is being truthful about what has happened in the past. The citizens even question their memories and logic because there is no certainty of the past. Without records, the government can rearrange history however they please because there is no evidence to prove they are wrong. Similarly, in the article, “The Other Side Of the Great Firewall”, China has set up an immense system of “online censorship, commonly known as the Great Firewall, [which] blocks the populace from viewing material deemed dangerous to the state” (Beech etal 2). The chinese government has blocked the chinese citizens from being able to go on a variety of websites in order to protect China from western influences. Without certain websites, the government can regulate what their citizens can see and can hide what they don’t want their citizens to see. The citizens are being blocked from information that is considered dangerous to their government. The government continually will have total jurisdiction through the use of blocking websites
I use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Snapchat, Tumblr, and Pinterest. Although all of the platforms listed have various purposes, they help to cure my boredom and keep me in touch with the world. On most accounts, my social media is a diary that I leave open to the world. Using social media for business and communications is a very useful and innovative resource. When handled by the right people it helps the greater good. For example, the news can now reach more people at faster rates than it could traditionally. You can talk to your relatives face to face over Skype. Social media helps people find jobs by assisting in making connections to others. It is a useful tool, but in most cases, it has fallen into the wrong hands in such a way that news is no longer true "news". It has become a race to popularity in the form of likes and retweets rather than driving interest on real
Their system of filtering and censorship is acknowledged as the most advanced and effective in the world. The Chinese internet system includes about thirty-thousand censors, as well as having web browsers, such as Google and Yahoo, censor their results.10 For an average citizen to publish their opinions without either an elite free speech patron or a willing government publishing house, the safest method is to publicize their thoughts through an internet bulletin board system run by the Chinese government.11 However, these electronic bulletin boards are required by the law to be licensed, the posts monitored constantly, and any posts which are found to be “inappropriate” are removed. Any forums that are free from government censorship are forbidden, since the Chinese authorities refuse to recognize the rights of the citizens to publish their uncensored opinions. Furthermore, if debates over political or other issues begin to take a life of their own, they are commonly silenced by Chinese authorities.12 The Chinese authorities only permit these monitored bulletin boards both for their own benefit and because they recognize that there must be outlets for the average person to express their dissatisfaction with the government.13 Allowing the citizens to speak their mind functions to lessen the political tension, by acting as a release for their discontentment. These boards also serve as an excuse to deflect criticism by other countries, who complain that people in China do not enjoy freedom of expression. Additionally, they allow government authorities to monitor the mood of their people and to find weaknesses, both in the government and in their support. Finally, the bulletin boards allow government authorities to track those who express discontent, keeping their expressions visible, so the authorities can trace these

Many people do online shopping instead of simply going to the store. This means personal information is saved to the computer. As this may seem as something normal there is ways people can steal that information. It has been proven over and over by big companies being hacked for example PlayStation Network. Technology does have positive sides to it but it can be an issue to your security. Besides having access to credit card information, hackers can locate where you live or even where are you now. This is dangerous since they can be searching for reasons to harm you. Another side effect now in the social media aspect is that social media basically defines you for possible employment. Companies can do basic researches and find your information of Facebook or any other social media and base their decisions on that. They can access your private information and depending who you are daily can shape up your character. This means that you should be perfect and any flaws you may have to them can be found thanks to the social media you enjoy
As much as social media has managed to ruin our society, it plays a positive role for the public as well. Social media allowed people to use their networks as a form of reaching out to old friends and family across the world. With America being known as the melting pot of the world, our society has several people with family on the other side of the Earth. With social media in effect, this permits people to stay in touch with long lost loved ones and keep ties tight. Not only has it sanctioned friends and family to keep in touches but has granted people to relocate birth parents and unknown family members as well. Yes, social media has failed our society greatly but there is always a rainbow somewhere after a rainy day. Social media can play a positive role by bringing people back together.
Social media are websites or applications that most of people use every day, but it can cause several harmful effects, such as symptoms of mental health, increase cyberbullying, and reduce productivity. Social media is a place where people can share their personal information, pictures, videos, ideas, and different form of expressions. It also the great place where people can interact with each other by using the text posts or comments. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter are the platform social media that most of people use. Each people has different purpose of using social network, such as communicate with friends, or promote a business. According to the Statita.com, in 2017, 81 percent of U.S. Americans had a social media profile, representing a five percent growth compared to the previous year.
Social media has revolutionized the way we communicate, not always is that a good thing. The government should be watching for trigger words like assassination, rape, suicide, murder, and human trafficking just to have a few. Messaging apps should be monitored too. There are dangers of fake accounts, sharing, posting and trafficking information that would, and could possibly harm people in communities. Video apps such as YouTube is a massive issues within the topic of social media. For example ISIS posting videos of decapitation and murder. Now that is a very scary thing. Postings like that should be targeted by the government and stopped.
Since we are given these incredible tools to communicate, we need to use them. An example of a time that social media was used for good was last year when the Stop Kony campaign was trending on twitter. At it’s most popular time, #StopKony was tweeted more 1200 times a minute. The Stop Kony marketing team created a video as an experiment, having no idea that they would change the
As human beings we live in a world where technology develops faster than our brain’s can function. Over the years society has been convinced that everything can be found on the Internet. It is proven when people do such things as update statuses, post pictures, and post videos of personal relations or topics. In the novel Writing On The Wall: Social Media-The First 2,000 Years by Tom Standage the author explores the way humans have been communicating since before time. The author not only tells his point of view on today’s source of communication, but he allows Robin Dunbar, a British anthropologist to give specific examples using statistics through quantitative data.
After the 911 happened in America, US passed Patriot Act to extend power for NSA to collect information from people’s phone records or any sorts of communication in order to eliminate the chance of existence of terrorists. After the detection of terrorists, United States would destroy their groups via secret programs like drone program. Through the improvement of surveillance technology and the lack of oversight in the past decade, the NSA is breaking the norm of securing people’s private information and collecting mass data from people’s daily lives. NSA’s immoral action become an excuse for other countries to detain internet freedom. According to Washington Post 14, “repressive regimes have begun opting for a Internet that is increasingly controlled by national laws about what can and can't be done online. In 36 of the 65 countries surveyed around the world the state of Internet freedom declined in 2014”. In order to avoid the potential surveillance that NSA applied on social media like Facebook or Twitter, a large number of countries declined Internet freedom recently. Especially for China, a potential future global central power, definitely will compete with US no matter politically or economically in the future, is very likely to block the channel between US and China in order to ensure
While president Xi Jinping has been in power, censorship of the internet has elevated in recent years. This is believed to be because the communist party is seeking more control (Beach). For example, one heavily blocked piece of history in China is Tiananmen Square protest. Words related to the Tiananmen Square protest like Beijing loud sound, explosion, protest, and June 4 have all been blocked (Henochowicz). On June 4, 1989, Chinese troops walked into Beijing, the capital of China, and fired on civilians. 10,000 arrests were reported along with hundreds to thousands of deaths. Not to mention some individuals who played a role in the protest were executed (“Tiananmen Square Fast Facts”). This is one example of how the government has kept citizens in the dark about their nation’s history and the role their government plays in conflicts. The Chinese government has found every way possible to block reports of the Tiananmen Square protests leaving citizens clueless of what really took place. Although many citizens feel the censored internet is protecting them, others do not feel the same. In fact, many citizens believe their basic rights of freedom and speech are being taken away. Sina Weibo, one of the biggest social media networks in China, is a microblogging site which has over 300 million users (McDonald). Sina Weibo has been required to overview the content from every distributor who has more than 100,000 followers. If they find content that is harmful to the reputation of the government they are directed to delete the post within five minutes of viewing it (Henochowicz). This is preventing viewers and distributors from posting what they really think about topics. By not allowing citizens to post about topics and
Do you ever feel like you are being watched or followed, feels a little creepy right? That is exactly what is happening every time you log into one of the many social media sites offered via the world wide web. Some users say that if you aren’t doing anything wrong, what does it matter if our every move is being tracked and recorded. It matters because our privacy is being violated, having privacy is one of our basic human rights. When we sign up on social media we knowingly give up that right as Kent Anderson, author of “People are Willing to Trade Less Privacy for Access to Social Media”, writes, “ Social networks are based on sharing information, so anyone using such a network is automatically accepting
Social media makes it easy for people to communicate and interact with each other anytime anywhere in the world. People can stay connect to their families and loved ones no matter how far they are from each other. That ability to
