Where we are, and what we believe affect the way we view society. Social lenses are the preconceptions we make about the world around us. It is what makes people come across the same situation have different perspectives and understandings it. They are caused by gender, sex, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, and all in all experiences. As life goes on, a perspective over a situation can change because of the experiences faced in life. Social lenses have affected my perspective on the education system, the “Black Lives Matter” movement, and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.
To begin, where I am from affects the way I view the education system. I am originally from Massachusetts. While living there, I attended a Montessori

As said before, I am originally from Massachusetts and moved to Atlanta, Georgia. When I came to Georgia, people acted differently than what I was most used to. Because of that, I have a different perspective on the “Black Lives Matter” movement. I love black people so don’t get me wrong here. I just believe that other things should be done in our black communities to stop having to deal with our people dying for no valuable reason every day. I feel like the “Black Lives Matter” movement is just a big blame game. I say this because all we are doing is blaming people “white” race for killing our people. Even though this may be true in some way, there are things that we can do as a race apart of this movement to stop our people from even coming in situations where we could possibly end up dying. There are things that we can do to prevent these problems, like holding programs and mentorships that teach our youth what to do when approached by a police officer. We also need to find ways to get our people out of gangs, selling drugs, doing drugs, and getting into jail. We need to teach our youth to grow up and become successful and not just have the goal of making it to their sixteenth birthday or graduating high school. They should learn how to become successful business owners and not just work for others their entire lives. As a part of this movement, we need to also take …show more content…
My sex is female, and I also identify my gender as being a heterosexual female. As far as religion goes, I identify as a non-denominational Christian who basically almost lives at church. All of these aspects of my life affect my perspective on the LGBT community. I believe that being homosexual is wrong and should not be done because only man and woman should be together, but because of my religion, I also believe in accepting those people apart of the LGBT community. Many people would say that I am wrong or confused for thinking this way because I am Christian and believe in God because the bible says in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, “Surely you know that people who do wrong will not get to enjoy God’s kingdom. Don’t be fooled. These are the people who will not get to enjoy his kingdom: those who sin sexually, those who worship idols, those who commit adultery, men who let other men use them for sex or who have sex with other men, those who steal, those who are greedy, those who drink too much, those who abuse others with insults, and those who cheat.” Many people who are not truly rooted in their faith will see this scripture and will shun away all people apart of the LGBT community or just stop believing in God because they are in that community. I, on the other hand, know that even though that is said in the Bible there is more to this statement. The Bible also says
In terms of your first point, I do agree that there should be action on black on black crime, but the difference between the Blacklivesmatter movement/ police brutality and black on black crimes is that the police officers are are not convicted/ go to jail whereas black civilians who commit these crimes do. This isn't a jab against you or anything but it really pisses me off when i see that people are using black vs black crimes as an argument to invalidate the black lives matter
According to Central Florida Future “ Black Lives Matter is simply us saying,”Our lives are valid”.It is not the same as “Our lives are more important than yours”(Debouse and Ellison). When this movement was created it's not a movement for Black lives only matter, this movement is bringing attention to African-American lives do matter as well as everybody else's lives. The Christian Science Monitor states “Other supporters point out that responding to “Black Lives Matter” by saying “all lives matter” minimizes the problems faced by black Americans, and undercuts their message”(Fredrikson). Just by saying all lives matter, which they do, but the African-American folks feel they are excluded from all lives matter because if everybody's life did matter police and other people would not be victimizing the blacks as the bad guys. The attention people have brought to this movement is amazing because now more and more people are understanding and learning as to why is movement started and what is the reason they are doing it for. Celebrities such as Beyonce, Snoop Dogg and Stevie Wonder have brought attention to this movement by sharing their opinion on social media, interviews etc. In conclusion, Black Lives Matter has a valid reasoning to be a positive
I can use my newly developed sociological perspective in my everyday life by identifying the cultural beliefs and biases utilizing through a sociological lens.
Social lenses are the preconceptions and prejudices that we bring to our observation of the world. Different people can look at the same social situation and understand it in different ways. This is because they see it through different social lenses. Our social lenses are built through our socialization. As we grow up, we are being taught (implicitly or explicitly) what sorts of things "people like us" believe in and what sorts of attitudes we have. These will influence how we see the world around us.
I get the Black Lives Matter movement. I too have said that all lives matter, but in the current context, no lives matter more than black lives right now because they are right, far too many black lives have been taken unnecessarily. Many people have demonized the BLM movement because of the words of a few people who have threatened the lives of white
These three things all contribute to the change we want to see in society. Currently, The Black Lives Matter movement is at the point of causing civil disobedience, which is used to gain the attention of the media, politicians and the nation as a whole. The movement works at different levels with the hopes of making changes in society which in turn would promote equality within the criminal justice system. Leaders of Black Lives Matter understand how the general population’s beliefs about crime and racism acts as an antagonist to any sort of reform to lower racial discrepancies, due to this they are trying to emphasize how race does matter in both the criminal justice system and society through the means of protests. The 23 active Black Lives Matter chapters across the United States are staging demonstrations in order to get society to acknowledge that there is a problem, and once people begin to listen, there can be legal challenges and new laws that work to influence a societal change. On August 28th, 2014 during Labor Day weekend supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement from around the nation set out to participate in a Black Lives Matter Freedom Ride. This protest, based off of the 1960s Freedom Riders, brought people to Ferguson, MO, the city where Michael Brown was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson. Naturally this
A necessary and common fight for equality has been one that has survived throughout all of man’s existence. Due to recent racial divide and the product of racial profiling, a movement has risen up to combat these common issues. The most recent and most well-covered is the Black Lives Matter Movement. Even though it has been lauded by some media sources and individuals as the next great movement to champion for civil rights, the Black Lives Matter movement is not the same as the African-American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s nor is it likely to be as successful. If the Black Lives Matter Movement continues with discrepancies in ideology, lack of clear leadership, and trends of hate, the movement is doomed to fail.

For decades black Americans have been treated as animals, looked at as if they are monsters, and killed like bugs. Actions like Police brutality and racism is what caused Black Lives Matter. The creation of the Black Lives Matter was a response by the black community to give a voice to black Americans affected by the increase of wrongful deaths due to the law enforcements and vigilantes across the country. This has been going on for so long that it seems like we are stuck in the past. For years, even decades black Americans have had to live the struggle of being equal. Even when things are going good and we think we finally have the same rights, something happened to change that. It is time to shed a light on the real purpose of Black Lives Matter and why they are important to today's society.
Why did the Black Lives Matter movement begin? How did it come about? Is systematic oppression towards blacks a real enough issue in the United States in order for them to raise concern? Along with police brutality? And discrimination? They simply cannot just be made up concepts. For that reason, Black Lives Matter was coincidentally created. Black Lives Matter is a social movement that desires to bring attention that black lives matter, too. I believe the movement wants to acknowledge that black people too deserve the justice they are currently not receiving. The Black Lives Matter movement, being as pro-black as it is, does not and will never mean another race is valued less than that of a black life. The movement simply wants to gain
The Black Lives Matter movement has swept across America. It 's branched out with chapters in over 31 cities and held rallies and boycotts across the United States(Sidner). The Black Lives Matter movement started with the outrage of the death of a young man. It continues to take over headlines and raise awareness on police brutality and inequality. However, the movement has met resistance from the All Lives Matter group. This group thinks that Black Lives Matter is a movement to express hatred towards other races. However, statistics, the views of fellow citizens, and the overall purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement, can prove that the movement wasn 't meant to express hate on other races and that we need to support the movement instead of going against it.
Social movements are vital to the establishment of our societies, and they way we are governed. Social movements help the less privileged band together to create a stronger voice among a sea of political correctness and unlawfully rule that the public supposedly have to abide by without question. Movements create this new form of platform that, if done successfully, are able to create a worldwide frenzy where people from across all walks of life, including politicians, academics, the less fortunate, the homeless, doctors, etc, are able to come together to create change, or to start to create change on a matter that is close to their hearts. One of these matters that has come up in recent years that has been an ongoing battle for centuries upon centuries is Black Lives Matter (Although named various things throughout time such as black civil rights). Black Lives Matter is a movement that started back in 2012 after George Zimmerman was acquitted for his crime against a 17 year old boy named Trayvon Martin, and Trayvon was then put on trial for his own murder (Garza, A. 2014, p. 1.). This crime was just the tipping point for three women who wanted to see a change in the way black lives were/are treated. Black Lives Matter is one of the most important socio-political movements of our time, and this is why it is an important movement to connect with and understand. Throughout, I will be going through the strategies and the tactics Black Lives Matter advocates and cofounders have

The Black Lives Matter movement began in 2013 after George Zimmerman was found not guilty of the murder of 17 year-old Trayvon Martin. About a year after Martin’s death, an 18 year-old unarmed male, Michael Brown, was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. That sparked weeks of protests. Years later, Asians, Latinos, and some whites joined in and realized how big of a problem this was becoming. As the years go by, the BLM Movement will keep growing and will not go
