The North and South merged as two distinct regions because they had various differences. These differences included the geography, economy, societal and transportation systems during Antebellum (pre Civil War). One of the most striking differences between the North and South was the climate and geography. In the North it is warm with humid summers and snowy winters. They have short growing seasons because of the cold weather, making it a struggle to farm. The North has beautiful, clear rivers and the coasts are full of bays. Most of the cities in the North are built near the bays. The cities are mainly where all of the trading centers are located. In the South it is mainly warm and sunny during summer. They have mild winters with lots of rain. The climate is perfect for growing crops because the soil is very fertile. The North and South sides have very contrasting climates and geography. There are various differences in the economy of the North and South. In the South, the economy was mainly based off of agriculture. In the North there were mainly Irish, Germans, and some Europeans. The population increased a lot by immigration between 1800 and 1860. There were churches in most cities, along with schools. Children went to school but most did not go onto college because it was for wealthy families only. In the South the population was mainly Europeans. They were mostly from England and Scotland. The other part of the population was slaves. Around ⅓ of the Southern region were slaves . One quarter of Southern people owned slaves. Those people were pretty wealthy. The majority of the slave population worked on farms. Not very many people were educated. People were only able to go to school if their parents owned a plantation.
