Throughout history, there have been many geographic differences between the North and the South that have lead to economic differences between them. Some of these differences, such as the climate differences, have had many effects on the economy in these to regions.
One such way that shows the effect of the climate on the economy is in Document 4. This document states “The northern soil and climate favored smaller farmsteads rather than large plantations. Industry flourished”(Document4). This is showing how since the climate in the north wasn’t good for growing crops, so the northerners worked in industry instead. This quote shows how a geographic difference between regions leads to economic differences between them because it shows how the
From colonial times there were differences in geography that gave rise to variations in culture and economy in the United States. Due to the differing characteristics, a sectional economy molded the United States into two distinct regions: the north and the south. The north, a commercial society, which supported industry and commerce while the south, an agrarian civilization, flourished in the production of raw materials with use of slaves. The two economies were both self-supporting and capable to create a stronger, more productive nation. The regional differences sought to build America, in turn threatened to destroy it. Many Historians believe that the Civil War was constructed over the issue of slavery. However, the concerns of states'
One of the main Economic Differeneces where that there where more trains in the north then in the south. I think that is because the southern people didn’t wont the blacks to get on trains and leave to the north or train. Another one is that more cotton factories were in the south then the north and i think this is because there were more slaves in the south then the north obvoiusly because the north didn’t have slaves. Another thing is that in Doc B they say the populations are very different from the south had 23,000,000 and the south had 8,700,000.
The North attracted many people for religious reasons and eventually developed a profitable shipbuilding industry based on the natural forests and harbors. More people who were interested in profit inhabited the South. This lead to the importation of a lot of slaves. Women's and slaves rights differed too, the South had fewer women so they were treated better, and the North had fewer slaves so they were not treated as bad. But overall both regions profited and lived happily off their
The Northern regions had an economically diverse economy. This led to conflict when rural and coastal cities had priorities that conflicted when it came to trade. These conflicts were not as prevalent in the South as the economies of these communities were generally intertwined.
Tariffs caused economic differences between the North and the South. Tariffs were generally in favor of the Northern industries in which they benefited more. These tariffs were able to protect Northern industries and their imports and exports. The South on the other hand did not have an industry based economy. Their economy was centered
There were many economic differences between the North and the South that eventually led to the Civil War. One main difference was that The South's economy was based on agriculture and slave labor while the North's economy was more focused on manufacturing. According to Document 1a, “Abraham Lincoln Historical Digitization Project” , it represents that the value of Northern manufacturing surpassed the value of Southern manufacturing. This shows that the Northern states had a very well off economy , which can partly be due to its geography and location along the coast which contributed to major trade. Another reason for the North’s good economy was because unlike the South the industrialized North generated their wealth through innovation
To begin, the North and South were different economically mainly because one, the North, was an Industrial economy, and the other, the South, was an Agricultural economy. Meaning, in the North, they mainly made their money through northern factories and inventions. Middle class workers would work up to twelve to fourteen hour shifts in factories to make a little income. The owners of these factories tended to make the most money while the Artisans,
The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history. America was split into two sides that had strengths and weaknesses against each other. It seemed they were the complete opposite. The North had more factories and railroads, while the South had more farms. Politics had a strong part to play too. The North had a better government, while the South struggled to form one. Finally, the North had a larger army throughout the war.
The American Civil War was the bloodiest war ever in the history of the country. The war which started in February 1861 and ending in the spring of 1865 saw 642,427 Union and 483,026 Confederate soldiers die. The Union consisted of all 6 New England states as well as: New York, California, Nevada, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Oregon, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. The Confederate states included: Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. The battle between the North (Union) and South (Confederates) was caused by numerous disagreements and opinions, one of the main reasons being the economic differences between the North and South which lead to insurmountable disagreements about the way the country should be run.
The most important difference between the north and south was the issue of slavery. The South was primarily agricultural, and the southern economy was based upon the existence of large family farms known as
One of the most striking differences between the North and the South was the climate and geography. The North’s climate was full of warm summers and cold winters; the terrain was rocky and hilly, which wasn’t good for farming. But the North did have little farms. Most of the forest was used for shipbuilding, and cities were used for trading centers. The rivers were fast and shallow which made it hard to navigate. Also in the North people used waterpower to run factories, because it was a cheap source of energy. The South was somewhat different; the climate was generally warm and sunny. The summers were long and hot, and the winters were pretty mild. Due to the South’s climate they were able to grow different crops in large amounts, unlike the North. The south had large farms, called plantations. In the South cities developed near rivers, because of rich soil which made it easier for them to farm.
The economy of Northern and Southern states was one of the most difference between the two sides as one was known for its factories and industries, while the other was known for its agriculture and farming. The North in the 1800s, although still consists of small farms, it too also becomes more and more industrialized. Industries flourished more in the North than in the South. Population in the North grows more quickly than in the South as their economy was based more on family farms, industry, mining, commerce and transportation. Many large cities were established more in the North than in the South. Their population has more majorities of immigrants who came from Europe and Asia in the mid-1800s looking for a new beginning in the United
We are going to start discussing the economic aspect of both colonies, it is important to note that the economic activities and trade of each colony depended on the environment in which the settlers lived. Geography and climate were important factors that impacted the economic and commercial activities between New England colonies and Southern colonies because these depended on the environment.
Both areas had many farmers, but the south was successful with big plantations. The southern economy depended on agriculture while the North was based on technological advancement. The North successful developed many industries, while the south improved their farming methods (Roark, 7). The south farmers established huge plantations for cash crop production especially cotton. In addition, slavery became an important factor that provided
The Northern and Southern colonies had many differences and similarities in the way the world was maintained and controlled. There are comparisons and contrast that can be discovered through political, social, and economical. There regions developed an identity that would affect the American economy. The South it meant agricultural production and the North it meant a collection in resources for the purpose of industrial manufacturing.
