Ripped away from your spouse, your children have disappeared, strangers are pushing you away from your home, and all you can hear is the screams of your friends going through the same thing. You are then forced to walk to a destination unknown, stuffed into a ship, and brought to place where you are now just mere property to someone. For millions, a scene like this is very familiar. Slavery, a once dominated trade that physically built America, is now a controversial, horrifying piece of history. One thing is certain, slavery was gruesome, and will never be allowed in the United States border again.

Thus, slavery began in the new land. The once Europeans wanted these slaves to be different from them so there was some sort of distinction, so they captured Indians, and brought in captured Africans to get the job done. Indians became difficult to in-slave and some did not agree with the decision so Africans became the figure for slavery. During the first years and colonies in America, there was not many captive slaves, and those who were slaves worked with servants sharing the duties. Many slaves would also have the option for freedom at their master’s discretion, which would usually be after several years working for them. Those who were forced into Slavery in America had many jobs and tasks to accomplish throughout the years. According to Heather Williams in her book American Slavery, in the beginning stages of American development slaves “built the roads, cleared land, cut down trees to produce lumber for buildings and wood for fires, and they burned the lime used in outhouses for burial”. On top of already being overworked, slaves had to maintain livestock including producing dairy products, grow crops so the people in their colony could have food to eat, and take care of issues inside their owner’s home such as cooking, knitting and cleaning.
