Sir Gawain and The Green Knight is about Arthur and his knights having a New Years Eve party. Suddenly, a stranger walks in on his horse with his green skin and a challenge. He challenged king arthur to play a game but his nephew stepped in his place. Gawain was to hit the Green Knight as hard as he could with the axe and he would return the favor. He struck a blow, the knight’s head rolled to the floor, the Green Knight got off his horse and picked it up and rode off so fast they thought sparks had flew off the horses hooves. The challenge of the green knight challenged Gawain's honesty and bravery. Later on in the story, Gawain finds out that the Green Knight was really Lord Berkilac and he was testing him. A year passes and Sir Gawain boldly puts on his armor and embarks on his journey to receive his return blow. After traveling for months, Sir Gawain stumbles upon a castle where he is graciously welcomed. The significant change in clothing of Sir Gawain from armor to soft clothing suggests a failure to the expectations placed upon him by his pentangle and allegiance to Camelot.

During the journey that Sir Gawain must go on in order to find the Green Knight he undergoes multiple “tests”. These “tests” range from the fact that he is all by himself and doesn’t know where the Green Knight lives as well as the test of once he finds the Green Knight his death is only moments away. The final and ultimate test that Sir Gawain had to go through was at the castle with the Lord’s wife. While the Lord was out hunting on the first day of Gawain’s stay, his wife tried to seduce Gawain and continues throughout his stay by stealing a kiss which then turns to multiple kisses, from Gawain. Gawain’s first portrayal of being a true knight comes when the Green Knight makes his appearance in Camelot. The Green Knight first speaks to King Arthur and proposes that they play a “game.” Arthur will strike the Green Knight with his axe, and in return the Green Knight will return the strike in a year and a day. King Arthur agrees to this game and its terms, but as he steps up to accept the challenge, Gawain comes forward and offers to participate in the “game” in place of King Arthur. Sir Gawain says to King Arthur, “I implore with prayer plain that this match should now be mine” (341-342). Gawain goes on to strike the Green Knight, cutting off his head. However, the strike does not kill the Green Knight; he picks up his head from the ground and repeats to Sir Gawain that he will return the blow in a year and a day. In this moment, Gawain’s bravery is clearly showcased. First, he takes a challenge in place of his king, which he did not have to do.

Gawain however will not coward out and will remain loyal to the agreement and shrugs off the warning. He eventually runs into the Green Chapel and calls out for the Green Knight. The Green Knight takes three swings at Gawain purposefully missing the first two, and then nipping the neck of Gawain on the third blow. Gawain, not harmed, arose and requested to fight the Green Knight drawing his sword. The Green Knight says he didn’t want to fight only because Gawain has fulfilled the agreement already. He explains that he spared Gawain the first two times for receiving the kisses back from him but the third blow was for not returning the Green Girdle he received. Gawain was thankful and explained that women were the reason for men’s downfall giving examples. The Green Knight introduces himself as Lord Bertilak and explained the Old lady whose face was covered was his Aunt Morgan Le Fay, Merlin’s apprentice, and that he had a spell cast on him. He says the main reason he came to King Arthur’s court was Morgan Le Fay’s plan to scare Queen Guinevere to death. He asked Gawain to come and stay at his castle because he is loved there but he declines and rides back to Camelot with The Girdle under his left arm to show that he committed fault to enemies back along the way as well as the

He knows it is his duty to protect King Arthur, but only volunteers to do so at the last second. Sir Gawain also breaks his oath to the Lord of the castle he is staying in. He broke their vow to trade whatever they had earned during the day when he keeps a sash the Lady of the castle gives him because he believes it will protect him during his battle with the Green Knight.

Victoria L. Weiss mentions that the temptations Sir Gawain faced started before he left the court, providing evidence that supports the idea that Gawain is young and inexperienced. Due to his lack of experience and his eagerness to prove himself, he easily falls for the temptations of the challenge presented by the Green Knight. Victoria’s examination of the idea that Sir Gawain was tempted before he left the court provides evidence that he failed his quest when he accepted the challenge. By accepting the challenge and striking the Green Knight so aggressively, Sir Gawain breaks pentangle code, which is a major part of his identity. By doing so, Sir Gawain diminishes his well-known trait of chivalry. This act of disgrace towards one of his most profound characteristic is repeated when fails to uphold his agreement with Lord Bertilak.

In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the character of Sir Gawain, nephew of the famed Arthur of the Round Table, is seen as the most noble of knights who is the epitome of chivalry, yet he is also susceptible to mistakes. His courtesy, honor, honesty, and courage are subjected to various tests, posed by the wicked Morgan le Fay. Some tests prove his character and the chivalrous code true and faultless, like the time he answers a challenge although it might mean his death, or remains courteous to a lady despite temptation. Other tests prove his character and the chivalrous code faulty such as the time he breaks his promise to his host, and when he flinches from a harmless blow.

Gawain is willing to put his welfare on the line to save his king and friend. He says that he would be a coward and without honor if he lets King Arthur die knowing that all he must do to save him is to marry a woman, although she is quite disgusting.

Instead of dying, the Green Knight walked over to his own head, picks it up, turns it to face Gawain, and tells him to meet him at the Green Chapel in a year and a day.
