The Simple Life William Zinsser in his essay, “Simplicity,” describes the tendency people have to inflate their own words. A majority of us think that something is missing if a word or sentence is too simple causing us to add unnecessary information only to confuse our readers. Zinsser shows us examples of this in everyday life such as a simple letter, or a brochure by an insurance company, where the corporation uses a statement that overuses vocabulary to express something so simple. Zinsser observes that, “Clear thinking becomes clear writing; one can’t exist without another”,(Zinsser 175) His opinion on the key towards becoming an excellent writer is to take every sentence and to shorten it so that each word has …show more content…
Taking both of those tests, made me realize that not only did I fail, but I needed to make some changes in my life. My first priority is attending and excelling at school and juggling too many days at work with school is almost impossible to do. I knew I had to change my work schedule so that I have enough days to study and nights to rest in the future. In the end I knew it would work out even if I cut back on days to earn money, because my body and mind need to properly rest.
We don’t seem to realize but sometimes there are many unnecessary things we do that can easily be adjusted. Either working too much or spending time doing other activities can take up a lot of our energy. As Zinsser illustrates simplifying one’s life or one’s writing is possible and necessary at times, and if we all learned to do so life would be much
This essay presents the argument that instead of keeping a busy life, we should live a carefree and relaxed life instead. The busyness that overtakes our lives often comes subconsciously, which we submit to, without even realizing it ourselves. This supports Kreider’s claims that busyness is a “trap”. He also points out that once it has begun to overtake our lives, we begin to accept it and are led to believe that there is no way to avoid it. Once we start to believe that busyness is an unavoidable part of life, then we fall into the “busy trap.” The author also encourages the audience to avoid a busy lifestyle giving several reasons why a relaxed lifestyle is more ideal. The author also challenges the audience to avoid busyness and to strive towards a less stressful lifestyle.
I will prove that Dave Cullen uses specific words to help the reader visualize and specific sentence structure to convey an informative tone in order to appeal to the reader’s emotional and logic.
In Chapter 15, Zinsser talks about the difficulties people have writing about science and technology. Zinsser says that most people have trouble with these topics because people don’t really know what they are writing about. A lot of writers won’t put in effort to learn about what they are asked to write about. They can’t write about what they don’t understand, so they are just putting meaningless words on their paper. He even stated that most scientists out there don’t like wring about their own interests and discoveries because they aren’t good at writing. Zinsser says that when you write about science and technology, you should make it simple to readers so that they understand. You should write out and explain the steps that occur so that
Summary of Zinsser’s “Clutter” In his essay, “Clutter,” Zinsser begins by identifying the prevalence of clutter in everyday life. Furthermore, he examines the problem of clutter in literature, stating that as clutter goes down, writing quality goes up. He then challenges the reader to look for just how many words do not serve a purpose in their writing (pars 1-2). As he continues, Zinsser provides further examples of clutter in everyday life and communications.
Goodman 6 Richard Goodman English Comp II Mrs. Cravens 21 February 2018 Audience in Mind What makes a good writer? Many people have differing opinions on what makes a person a good writer, or the standard in which one can write. One of the main things to remember about writing is to always keep your audience in mind, and adjust you writing style and language accordingly.
“I bet most of us have experienced at some point the joys of less: college-- in your dorm, traveling-- in a hotel room, camping-- rig up basically nothing, maybe a boat”. Graham Hill, a TED Talk speaker said “Less Stuff, More Happiness.” Today people disagree with that, they believe the more someone has, the more joyful their life will be. But Hill voices his opinion to say the more items people have, the less happy they could truly become. What people truly need in life, is the simple things. Graham Hill used ethos, formal language, and hasty generalization to persuade the audience of his beliefs.
Some authors have a limited vocabulary due to upbringing; this alters how people view the message intended. When speaking about her mother, Tan states, “Some of my friend tell me they understand 50 percent of what my mother says.” (Tan, 1990, Para. 7) There are moments in communication where meaning can falter because of a lack of words to utilize. Tan also makes this point when transcribing words
Writers must avoid obvious content because it will help them project their own voice and keep the material fresh. In order to be distinct and voice their opinions, writers must “sum and dispose of the trite and
As students begin school, they can begin collecting words in a notebook to create awareness that words are like treasures. Revision of words can transform a piece of competent writing into writing that is memorable and deeply moving. According to the author, the words writers choose reflect their thinking, beliefs, and feelings. If we use simple words, we will get to the point, but we won’t move the reader. When writing, we must be specific because we want our readers to feel, experience, hear, taste, and smell the same way we do it.
Failure is a part of life. While many see failure as a negative thing, I have started to see it as a situation that can make you a better person. Failure drives me to never make that mistake again. I first realized this when I took my first AP class and AP exam and received a score of 2. This journey all started sophomore year when I took AP World History. I quickly learned that I needed to actually read and take notes to be able to succeed in the class. It took a few poor grades on essays and tests for me to understand this. Despite this new revelation, I still struggled in the class. When it came time to start reviewing and preparing for the exam, I put an immense amount of effort, but not as hard as I should’ve been. Exam day came and
Some kids that failed the test could be more successful in the future than the kid that past the test and told him that his future is gonna be good. These test are basically are just ruining kids future, so if they know they failed the test then they are gonna feel that what’s the point of trying to reach their goals if their future isn’t gonna be successful later
Growing impatient, the day finally came, the test results were online. I logged on to my student portal anxious, hesitant, and excited all at once. When I clicked the button that read View Test Results, I saw that I had not passed my 10th grade reading FCAT. I immediately burst into tears. Not only was I disappointed in myself, but this would be my very first time failing the FCAT. The year I needed to pass it so that I would not have to take it again, was the year I failed. I had went into a depressed mode ever since I found out I

At the time I had signed up for the SAT, something that anyone looking to get into college had to do, I was still facing these challenges of school, but as the months before the test were lurking closer, the challenges got harder and harder to fight. This had no correlation with the test itself, just life and anxiety taking over. About a month before the day of the test, I found myself in a psychiatrist’s office, breaking down and confessing
