The Founding Writers Captain John Smith and Governor William Bradford were two very important men in the New World. In the early 1600s, the men both wrote of the many experiences they endured in early America. The two scholars did not have much in common except for that fact. The two had different occupations, felt otherwise about the Native Americans, and had distinctive writing styles. However, the two men were to become two of the United States founding writers. Captain John Smith was a very important person in Jamestown. Cooper wrote, “Captain John Smith played a pivotal role in establishing Jamestown as a member of the governing council and in providing food for the settlers by trading with the Native Americans” (Cooper 2). He arrived at Plymouth from the Mayflower. While on the Mayflower he signed the Mayflower Compact. This was one of the first steps into his leadership of the Pilgrim people. William Bradford was the Plymouth Governor for almost thirty years. He was very important in leading the Pilgrim people and helping them to survive that harsh first winter. The Pilgrims left their homeland in search of religious freedom. Bradford believed that he and his people were chosen by God to complete the mission of reformation. Daly writes, “He begins his narrative, not with the Pilgrims themselves, but with the previous history of reformation. Only after he has established salvation history as the context for the Plymouth migration does he describe the people God has chosen to live the last chapter of His reformation of the earthly church. Confident of God’s assistance, they rested on His providence an found earthly rewards for their keeping of covenant, for though they were sometimes foiled, yet by God’s assistance they prevailed and got the victory” (Daly 560). Daly is describing how William Bradford put his faith in God for their survival. He believed God sent them on a special mission, and that God would see them through all of the hard times. This is one of the reasons that William Bradford was such a powerful leader. The Pilgrims put God above all, and because William Bradford made it known that he did too, they followed him and trusted him. Without William Bradford’s leadership the Pilgrims would have been lost. The winter would have been even harsher, and many more would have
The author John Smith, a pilgrim who arrived to the Americas, wrote a description of the new land in his book “ A Description of New England ”. In this book Smith shows a wonderful world of vast food and pleasure. Also, William Bradford another pilgrim who arrived to Plymouth on the coast of Massachusetts, wrote a book called “ Of Plymouth Plantation ” in which he describes what really happened, how the pilgrims actually lived. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast both authors and their books. John Smith wrote about the wonderful place the New World was, on the other hand, William Bradford wrote about the realities and difficulties of the New World.
William Bradford wrote Of Plymouth Plantation to inform readers about his journey to the new world. Bradford joined the Puritans when he was a young boy, which he later on separated from. Bradford came to the new world in search of religious freedom. The Puritans
While being in England, he decided to go on a voyage to colonize Virginia. Captain Christopher Newport was the leader of the voyage. Smith was on the council and he helped with many things, especially about securing foods from the Native Americans. Smith was captured by Chief Powhatan,
John Winthrop led the English Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony to the New World embarking the ship Arbella. John explained his desire to “…work as one man”, (Doc. A) Majorly wanting a message of equality to get across and the hope to make it successfully as a group. Unity as such was strongly needed in the journey to the New World. The beginning of the founding of the colony came to a rough start with the desire for many different things, the messy beginning called for a leader,
Captain John Smith from Jamestown colony was a soldier from England. Smith saved this colony from disaster, Smith did not wanted the colony to fail. Settles from Jamestown did not want to work, they only wanted to look for gold but there was no gold in the new land and they were running out of food. Smith had to trade with nearby villages to get food. Native Americans did not like English people but Native Americans and the colony got an agreement and they sold corn to them.
First off, Jamestown was mostly made up of men who had traveled for business, while Plymouth was populated by women, men, and children who pilgrimaged for religious security. Because of their reasons for travel Jamestown colonist were self seeking, and self serving, but the Puritans never hesitated to help their fellow Puritans. The leaders of these colonies were also abundantly different. Smith was boastful and made himself out to be a hero of some sort, Meanwhile, Bradford was humble and gave God credit for his and the colony’s accomplishments.
1. They became confident in their leaders and William Bradford was the most favored leader.
To many Europeans in the early 17th century the Americas seemed as a new land of opportunity. John Smith and William Bradford were two of the first men who left England seeking adventure and freedom in the New World. Both groups had difficulties while trying to form their colonies and Smith and Bradford were both elected to lead. While they were both great leaders they had very different lives before their journey from England. While starting their new colonies they also took different approaches to making the land habitable. One of the most notable differences between John Smith and William Bradford was their writing style. John Smith and William Bradford were very different people in
John Smith was an English explorer and a soldier who has remained in the books of history for his role in the establishment of a British colony in America. He reigned Virginia British colony which was based at Jamestown for one year between late 1608 and late 1609. During his reign, he used his experience as a soldier and an explorer to lead exploration of major rivers around the colony. Smith was first involved in plans to establish a British colony in North America in 1606 for personal gains with a London company which had been granted a charter by the King of England. Towards the end of
He is also known as the person who named the separatists whom he traveled with to America as “Pilgrims”. After moving to America with other separatists and the death of John Carver, Bradford became the governor. Bradford’s cultural values come clearly from his deep beliefs in god which have molded him into a great and understanding leader. His religious well-knowledge and life experiences lead him into making the community of Plymouth more stable and
Religion plays a major role in the day to day lives of the early settlers in America. So much so, that early colonial writers use it as a form of literary persuasion. John Smith and William Bradford were two such writers.
John Smith was selected because he was a Colonizer, soldier and an author as he wrote his first book in English in the New World called “A True Relation of Such Occurrences and Accidents of Note as Hath Happened in Virginia since the First Planting of that Colony (1608)”. While he was only in America for two years, Smith was in charge of the survival of England's first English colony in the New World. He is best known for being in
I found their two accounts of coming to the new world were just as much similar as they were different. Both men wrote about their experiences, however their approach greatly differed in dealing with the natives, settling the land, and convincing their fellow Europeans to make the voyage to the new world. Smith wanted to control the native people and their land, setting himself up for success in the new world. Bradford was more inclined to work with the natives and respect the nature of their ways. His intentions were not self-motivated, but rather served as an outwardly expression of his faith.
William Bradford wrote, ‘Of Plymouth Plantation’ written sometime between the years 1630-1651 serves as an historical account of the Pilgrims’ voyage and colonization in America. Bradford was born in England but became a separatist, and in 1620, sailed with his wife for America aboard the Mayflower in search of religious freedom. Bradford was a prominent member of the colony, even becoming governor for many years. His written account is still largely considered one the most important historical documents of the Colonization period. However, although viewed as an established historical piece, Bradford exhibits some bias in his historical accounts. His main purpose in writing the book was to convey his world-view/ideology of the Puritan lifestyle and to demonstrate his belief that the establishment of the colony was directly carried out according to God’s divine will. His religious beliefs were demonstrated in the language of the text through the use of a plain-style, third person narrative writing along with his use of biblical illustrations.
Bradford describes how under God’s providence people can accomplish anything. Bradford argued that it was God’s providence and guidance that they colonized in the way they did. While sailing to the New World the colonists encountered a massive storm that pushed them out of where they were sailing. However, “they committed themselves to the will of God and resolved to proceed” and after sailing more, “they fell with that land which is called Cape Cod” (Bradshaw 30). Bradford describes that the reason they wound up where they did was because of God wanting them to be there. Their belief in God was so optimistic that they believed that if they stopped in Cape Cod then he would give them what they needed
