The Gilded Age and the Progressive Era The Gilded Age was a time in the United States history in which there was an increase in growth of industry. This industrial movement was sparked by commodities such as gold, steel, and oil. These industries controlled by robber barons like John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and others built empires. While all of this was happening there were Presidents trying to keep the country running smoothly. For example, Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison, two presidents during a time of high tariffs and unlawful industrialization. As well as signing the Interstate Commerce Act, which is the first law that attempted to regulate railroads. Also in December of 1887, he called on Congress to act on reducing high tariffs which gave his opponent party a issue to campaign causing his loss of the 1888 election. After four years of not holding his Presidential title he won it back in 1892 making him President again in 1893. However, he did face a crisis with the Treasury department as well as with rail road strikes. It was Social Darwinism free at the beginning. What began as a social movement grew into apolitical movement guided by the Presidents. For instance, Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft virtually have nothing in common except the fact they were for antitrust matters. Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th President of the United States from 1901-1909. Theodore Roosevelt saw the presidential position as a “steward of the people”, he thought that the president should be able to take actions the benefit the public. He believed that the government should be a mediator between the economic issues and the people. He wanted to guarantee justice for the people and favor none. He was known as a trustbuster because he dispensed antitrust suits against big trusts. He also during his Presidency had the Panama Canal constructed to help the relationship between Pan-America. He also helped by issuing a Monroe Doctrine to prevent establishment of foreign bases in the Carribbean and mediated the Russo-Japanese War. Some of his mjor achievements lie in nature, Roosevelt was a big conservationist. Saying, “We have become great because of the lavish use of our resources. But the time has come to inquire seriously what will happen when our forests are gone, when the coal, the iron, the oil, and the gas are exhausted, when the soils have still further impoverished
