Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde are indeed the same person. Even though they have different personalities and look different, at the end of the day they are the same person. Basically Edward Hyde is a subset of Henry Jekyll, he is all his evil manifested into one person. His alter ego, Hyde, is just the embodiment of Jekyll's evil nature. The only thing that Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde have in common is that they are the same person. But other than being the same person, they have nothing else in common. Henry Jekyll is a well established, distinguished, intelligent doctor, Hyde on the other hand is the complete opposite. He may be a little smart because he knows how to transform himself into Hyde and to transform himself back to Jekyll. This may
I think Jekyll's desire to search for knowledge is a good characteristic to have. Knowledge can be power. However, the way in which one uses the power one has can be very hurtful to the people around you and to yourself. You have to have the "good sense" to know when to stick with what you are doing and to walk away when necessary.
He states “that man is not truly one, but truly two” (Stevenson 55). Jekyll imagines that the human soul is a battleground for an “angel” and a “villain” each fighting for mastery. What becomes of the story is Hyde becoming the one who wins the battle over Jekyll’s body as his power grew. What became of Jekyll and Hyde’s relationship is stressed with “The hate that now divided them was equal on each side” (Stevenson 69).
During the novella, Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll can be characterized as light and darkness. It is revealed at the end of the novella that Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jekyll are the same person and they shared the same personalities. “One of your fellows who do what they call good. Black mail I suppose; an honest man paying through the nose for some of the capers of his youth. Black Mail House is what I call the place with the door, in consequence. Though even that, you know, is far from explaining all" (Chapter 1). We can already tell that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are on two different sides of the good/evil scale and that Mr. Utterson's friend has an evil side to him. "He had in his hand a heavy cane, with which he was trifling, but he answered never a word, and seemed to listen with an ill-contained impatience. And then all of a sudden he broke out in a great flame of anger, stamping with his foot, brandishing the cane, and carrying on like a madman." (Chapter
Hyde and Jekyll share a body and are in a way the same person, he
However, with careful reading one will see that they are actually one person. One may argue in regards to being one being operating on two different ends of mental and emotional scales that Mr. Hyde essentially does not exist. It must be noted that the potion that Jekyll creates is not that was intended to move evil but one that allowed him to express his contained nature. In fact, Hyde could best be described as a disguise when worn Jekyll can carry out his urges without guilt or conscious. Hyde is not a different person that is separate from Jekyll but instead a labeled manifestation of negative and destructive urges of Jekyll. In many ways Hyde embodies the evil nature of Jekyll executed through the same body and mind but on different ends of an ethical spectrum. Moreover, the story never separates the two on perspective. Jekyll consistently uses statements like "I" even when Hyde is in action. Throughout the story the author makes no distinct difference in perspective leading readers to believe that though they have different names that they are inherently one and the same. In the 10th chapter, "Henry Jekyll's Full Statement of the Case" Jekyll carries the theme of duality that holds true for his character. He writes, "It was on the moral side, and in my own person, that I learned to recognise the thorough and primitive duality of man; I saw that, of the two natures
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are not that similar. They are both masculine. They have the same mind that shares experiences: “My two natures had memory in common, but all other faculties were most unequally shared between them (The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, pg. 114)”. They both share Dr. Jekyll’s money: “[He]…came back with the matter of ten pounds in gold and a cheque for the balance on Coutts’s, drawn payable to bearer and signed with a name I can’t mention…( The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, pg. 41)”. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde share living quarters, the servants, the laboratory and the cane: “…[Mr. Utterson] recognized it for one that he had himself presented many years before to Henry Jekyll (The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, pg. 61)”. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde have very general likenesses, while the differences are more significant.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are two different flowers from two very different gardens. They grew up in very different lifestyles and think about very different thoughts. Other people see them as very different individuals as well. One would think of Dr. Jekyll as the average human living an average life. Later in the story, that perspective changes. On the other hand, Mr. Edward Hyde is a little stranger than the others.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde have two separate personalities, but they both in a way share the same body. Jekyll is a tall man who is really friendly and has many friends. As he transforms into Mr. Hyde he loses his posture and becomes very mysterious and violent.
In the story The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde there are some differences and similarities between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Their mentality is extremely different and they are complete opposites in some way. In the story Dr. Jekyll wants to split himself into two different personalities. This is based off good and evil. Mr. Hyde basically is all of the evil in Dr Jekyll. This would mean that there would be a good amount of mental and moral differences between them. In essence the only thing that is similar about them would be that technically they are the same person.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are completely different yet totally the same. Dr. Jekyll a well liked and respected doctor, and Hyde not only the antagonist but one of the most evil characters that were human that I've ever read about. As different as they are; they are the same, in the sense that Mr. Hyde is just the evil that is in Jekyll and brought out with his own form called Mr. Hyde. the author creates this to show that every one has there inner demons. Because he does this it proves that Jekyll is as much Hyde as tiger is a cat.
I think Dr.Jekylls and Mr.hyde are totally different. They are different because one lies and the other keeps things to himself. Also Dr.Jekylls gets upset over saying a
Henry Jekyll is a fake person. Meaning he acts different in different places. There are two sides to him. One in public and one in private. Publically he is a good guy and friend, and a doctor. Privatly he is controlling and mean. He knows there is two sides to him, evil and good. He then tries to bring in Mr.Hyde so that they both can experiment on jekyll and try to get rid of both his sides so that he only has one.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are very different in multiple ways. They have nothing in common, whether its about mental, physical and moral. They are nothing alike.
One might question the extent to which Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are in fact a single character. Until the end of the story, the two seem nothing alike. Stevenson uses this marked contrast to make his point: every human being contains opposite forces within him or her, an alter ego that hides behind one's front. Correspondingly, to understand fully the significance of either Jekyll or Hyde, we must consider the two as looking at one single character. When viewed separately, neither is a very interesting personality. It is their relationship that gives the novel its power.
Jekyll has struggled with these split personalities he has created. It is that said that Dr. Jekyll is the side of him that is a respectable, educated, gentleman, and Mr. Hyde is the side of him that is his evil. Though he claims these two men are different, they are still the same person. Dr. Jekyll claims that some days, he would go to sleep Jekyll, and wake up Hyde. He also claims that it has been recently very difficult to revert back to Dr. Jekyll from being Mr. Hyde. Even if that were so, he is still the same person with the same body committing crimes. Therefore, Jekyll is well aware that he has these split personalities that he engages in, but he is still the same person aware of what he is
