“A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out,” Walter Winchell once said. This quote means that a real friend is there when you are facing a time of sadness, but also a time of happiness. An exploration of how the author of the poem “Always There”, by Erik Gual, and the authors of the novel, “We are still Tornadoes”, by Michael Kun and Susan Mullen, portrayed their interpretation of friendship shows how crucial having a friend can be. While similar, they have their differences. Erik Gual, the author of “Always There”, gets to the theme by using exaggeration and a metaphor, but Michael Kun and Susan Mullen get to the theme by using repetition and a characters dialect. Both of the literary works display a theme of always being there and sticking with your friend through both the good and the bad. In the novel it says, "I'm sorry you are going through such a sad time. I wish I knew of some way to make it better, but I know there's nothing I can say that will make much of a difference right now." (Kun and Mullen 214). From this quote, we learn that Cath …show more content…
In the story, a big conflict occurs, which is shown by the repetition of “And what happened with…” (Kun and Mullen 155) 14 times. This shows the strength of the two friends bond, because they are continuing to communicate, despite a conflict. No matter the size of a conflict, they continue to write, proving that they will stay by their friends side through everything. One of the main character doesn’t go to college, due to problems in academics. He revealed his bad grades when he said, “Give me a D in biology, then show up at my dad’s store and ask for “dungarees” like it never happened? (Kun and Mullen 16) Despite one of them going to college and the other not, they show a great act of friendship by sticking together through their
For all of the ups and downs of Henry Lee’s life he makes his life good with his love and friendship. Jamie Ford wants to get the reader's attention on friendship by writing Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Henry’s life was a wild, crazy, and hectic he was shunned out by his family just because he was being a good friend. Friendship is something that people can not live without. Just like Henry did a lot of things just so his friend can be happy, he showed that his friendship meant a lot to him knowing there was consequences.
tougher than each other. In the beginning the narrator tells his friends he is going on a camping trip to earn his badge and the friends said they will go to. Soon one of the friends gets taken to the next subway station without his friends. so he's there alone very scared. In the end, the friends admit that they hate being outdoors and roughing it and they all just want to go home. This story shows that friendships can mean rivalries.
In Sebastian Faulks' novel Birdsong there are a number of friendships that are affected by the war. Faulks presents these relationships in a way that allows the reader to explore how much they are affected by the war. Are these friendships a way for the men to cling to some sort of human connection in the midst of something so horrible that they become 'indifferent to death’?
Friendship opens our minds to different views and perspectives and change our perceptions. It has the power to change people’s views on life in a positive way. True friends will do anything to keep their friendship alive, no matter the barriers. Potok proves through the friendship of Danny and Reuven that friendship can be achieved no matter the barriers. He proves that friendship is a key value to life through his motif
They live in a stressful situation, but both hold it firm and lived through it. Their stories had taught a new generation a lesson that life was not easy as thought. Sometime it could be difficult to manage like both characters’ lives happened in the story. They were not crazy, but they were strong enough to live through their stress. Life sometime is unpredictable, but learning how to understand of the change could be a tool helping us to challenge our
Friendship describes the mutual pledge to help reveal the innermost workings of a person, bringing out the hidden attributes and validity of one’s characteristics. Subsequently, the bonds and struggles of friendship are a central cause for unveiling identity as the relationship one makes contributes to long-lasting change. The acceptance of a person’s differences conveys an importance for the development of strong bonds. Moreover, hardships accompanying relationships establish times to reflect on oneself and lead to positive outcomes for growth. Furthermore, the memorable journeys embed an area in one’s mind that will change the way self-perspective is seen. Through the characters of Lewis in If I Ever Get Out Of Here by Eric Gansworth and
When life gets you down, you know you have your friends to help you. For example, in Fever 1793, on page 169, when Mattie came back to her home she saw Eliza. "I cried a river and poor Eliza did her best to comfort me." Eliza learned that Mattie was all alone so Eliza took her in when grandfather died. When the world turns your life upside down, you always have your friends to help you to make it easier. It's easier because you can tell them about your problems and they can help you.
Friendship can be shown through the words of anyone in any form, whether it is short or long, in a simple poem to a complicated novel, even in a simple common book such as, Bridge to Terabithia. The author, Paterson, uses many of reasonable literary elements in her book, such elements encompass: character, plot, setting, theme, style, point of view, and tone. These seven elements show us that friendship between the main characters, Jesse and Leslie, in Bridge to Terabithia, although interrupted by many everyday occurrences, can develop quickly, without one's realization. And that friendship, that was suddenly started, can be suddenly gone with the least suspected. In this instance, friendship is suddenly ended, there would be the
In life there are many changes that can cause a true friendship to go wary such as marriage, divorce, birth of children, new careers, and sickness. However, through each of those events the two must remember to keep the intimacy, the letting down of emotional barriers and the expression of innermost thoughts and feelings, “that which makes friendships thrive must be an enjoyable one” and to “always interact” (Karbo 3). Although psychologists continue to research the formation of friendships the great philosopher Aristotle knew exactly how friendships formed and how the lasted.
An epic fantasy and a gloomy ranch life. True friends will never fade away. Or will it? Friendships and their outcome get very subjective evaluations. Both Steinbeck and Tolkien’s books: “Of Mice and Men” and “The Fellowship of the Rings” deal with a consistent theme of friendship. Although each author has their own distinct way of communicating their ideas, these books show similar views on the strength, consequences and limitations of friendship.
The author uses dialogue and events to reveal characterization and theme in the story. Twenty years ago, two friends were exactly the same type of people. Now they are nothing alike. They meet up together and discovers their differences.
This is a comparison of how different and how are tornadoes and hurricanes the same. So, the first thing that's different about them i have is you have a lot of time to tell when a monstrous hurricane is coming but with a tornado it is like magic you don't get a couple days like you would a tornado a tornado just appears.
“Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.” ~Helen Keller. That means that even though good things might happen it isn’t worth it if you go through the good things alone. In “Amigo Brothers” two best friends are in the championship together and have to fight each other, whoever wins the fight wins it all. Both friends don’t want to hurt the other and want them to do good but, at the same time, they want to do good themselves. In the end, after the fight, they decide to leave and not figure out who wins because they are both winners in each other's eyes. “Amigo Brothers” would be the best short story for a middle school students because it teaches how important friendship is and it shows that you have to figure
While the struggle to individually survive is inherent in Toni Morrison’s Jazz, what stands out more is the way companionship helps the characters to survive. The relationships that develop within the story are potent in their effects on characters, especially Joe Trace, a fifty-three year old man struggling with a failing marriage. Trying to fulfill his own desires, he has an affair. But because he kills Dorcas, his young lover who does not truly love him, Joe finds himself isolated from his wife and the rest of society. By reestablishing his relationships and connections to people who want to truly care for him, Joe is able to make himself whole again.
Antoine De Saint-Exupery’s Fantasy story, “Le Petit Prince,” takes place in five different settings: The asteroid that he lives on, asteroid B-612, the Sahara desert, an unknown city, a field where its location is unknown, and the other asteroids that the Little Prince explores in the cosmos of space. In all of these settings the author introduces characters that deliver metaphorical life lessons to the reader. The author didn’t write this book to deliver a story, he wrote this book to deliver different life lessons and themes that the reader is supposed to learn from. In this book the theme of friendship is found consistently throughout the book. This is the theme statement that I had pulled out from the theme of friendship: Friendships help you succeed, and they can help you learn different life lessons, this is why you need to enjoy friendships to their full potential for what they can offer because, they don’t last life times.
