Each year in the fall semester, Christopher Newport University’s six a cappella singing groups put on a glow-in-the-dark showcase event in the Ferguson Center for the Arts called “Glow in the Darcappella.” These CNU student groups include: Expansion, Extreme Measure, The Newport Pearls, Take Note, Trebled Youth, and University Sounds. This year, the event was held on a Friday night, October 23rd, and was a sold out
For this particular question, I am going to choose Juliek. Juliek was one of the musical performers back in one of the previous concentration camps. Coming from Warsaw, he was really passionate musician who became good friends with Elie. However, he ends up dying by the end of the chapter. He died by the suffocation caused from the many bodies piling him. Though, he was playing his violin as the bodies of other Jews were piling him. In a way, his death could be symbolic. He went out in life, doing something he loved.
The “Fall Choral Concert” was held in Pasadena City College, on Friday November 4, 2016 at 8pm. The concert was an hour and half long and was performed in the Westerbeck Recital Hall (CA 140). The performs of this concert were mostly students of Pasadena City College, whom according to their teacher and conductor Mr. Guerrero managed to put an amazing performance in only 6 weeks.
Being a counselor would be a meaningful experience for me. I attended Show Choir Camps of America in 2013 and 2014 and it was the experience of a lifetime. The skills, inspiration, and friendships I made while at Show Choir Camps of America will be a part of me for the rest of my life. I would feel privileged to be a part of giving that same experience to others as they become a part of the Show Choir Camp of America family. I would be a positive role model to the attendees and would lead by example, by being respectful to others, hardworking, and having the ability to give positive encouragement to the campers.
For 20 years on the third week of May, the auditorium would overflow with over 1000 audience members cramming to watch the Bartlett High School Spring Concert. Parents, students, and choir alumni came year after year to see the five choirs in their last performance of the year.
If you are not familiar with what Show Choir is, and the amount of time and work ethic you need, then you are in for a big surprise. Show Choir has evolved over the past years increasingly. Forget the young men and women in dark jackets and dresses standing on old risers and singing nice choral pieces. Show Choir has become a mini-musical sport. Many claim that Cheerleading and Marching Band is considered a sport, why should Show Choir be any different? Yes, show choir is mostly singing and dancing, but there is much more to it than one would think. I would know this because Show Choir has been a part of my life for almost 3 years now. I have experienced the hardship, fun, disappointment, pain, time, and joy, but it all paid off at competition when we would go to awards and see how we placed. Show choir is a sport, just as much as “cheerleading” or “marching band.”
I chose to join show choir because I thought it would be a good way for me to leave my comfort zone and try something new and fun. The first time I thought of auditioning for show choir was when I saw them perform during my sophomore year. They sang and danced to a song titled, "Till the Love Runs Out" and the sound and choreography they did just blew me away. I knew then that I wanted to be a part of that choir.
It is clear that our country 's criminal justice system is the new Jim Crow; with a huge majority of felons being African American, it is obvious that people of color have it harder when it comes to crime sentences. We must acknowledge that mass incarceration and the Jim Crow era are greatly similar. Minstrel shows, which showed black men to be lazy, dumb, and clownish, once justified the oppression of african americans. Many now believe that gangsta rap does just the same and is the modern day minstrel show, by portraying blacks to be drug dealers, angry, and violent men. Though many people believe that gangsta rap reinforces these stereotypes, it’s important for one to realize that this form of expression is not a modern day version of blackface performances.
For many, a fun summer often includes a visit to some sort of fair, whether it be the county fair or even the state fair. One of the unique aspects of the Ohio State Fair, specifically, is that they have their own youth choir known as the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir. This is an organization designed to bring high school students from all over the state of Ohio to live at the Ohio State Fair for eighteen days to make music. Throughout this experience, I have learned many important skills that will stick with me throughout the entirety of my life. Here is just a small sample of what I’ve learned.
Show Choir the Next Sport Most schools stress so much on so many different kind of sports, and raises them over some extra circular activities that aren't even considered sports. Most of the sports get pep rallies and all the appraisal that witch all the other activities that does the same or more as much work. I believe that show choir should be considered a sport and be treated like one. Most people think that all you do in show choir is sing and a little of dancing.
I almost got kicked from the vocal program. Well, not exactly, but in the moment I felt as if my world was falling apart. Before I knew it, I was in a technical varsity show choir and an on level show choir at the same time. At first I couldn’t handle it all but now it has become second nature with me and I’ve been able to make countless friends doing it.
This year has flown by quickly and sometimes I wonder where all the time went. When I first got my classes I was nervous because most of them were honors with two pre-AP classes. I learned that the classes were not hard if I studied and did my work. I wanted to drop out of my English class but my mother convinced me to stay in. My favorite class was science because we were always doing something interesting and I connected well with everyone. I got the opportunity to be in the school’s Show Choir which was amazing. I feel sad because in our Show Choir we are mostly composed of seniors so I got used to them and now I will miss them terribly. I feel like they were my second family.
For the past three years, I have participated in A Cappella. It is a chamber choir of about twenty students who are dedicated to learning and performing higher-level choral music. We meet for about an hour and a half, twice a week, which allows us plenty of time to bond. I auditioned for A Cappella because I liked singing and wanted to challenge myself musically, but I have received so much more from this group. I met some of my best friends through the group. My involvement has also fostered self-confidence, not only in my music skills, but in myself as a person. I have diligently honed my leadership skills as well. Last year, my school hired a new choir director. I was in an awkward position because, while my peers did not want to

Last week I was asked to be part of 12 acts performance to express myself on the theme of treasure. I was not sure what to talk about since I am not a creative person and I am a financial analyst. However my desire is to be a creative women, so I said "Yes".Over the weekend I was visiting my girlfriend in Brooklyn and I picked up from the sidewalk box two free treasures. One book was "Happiness Project" and the other was Belize tourist guide. Later in the evening I started to read "Happiness Project". I went on line to read a blog created by Gretchen Rubin. I could not stop reading it. She inspired me to create my 12 commencements to live my life by. After creating my 12 commencements I knew that I want this to be my Treasure performance.
