Should Teens be Limited from the Internet?
How would parents known if teens have too much screening time? Warning signs include having trouble getting up for school distress when unable to use the internet or withdrawal from activities with family and friends. Consider TV, video games and the internet as a privilege earned after daily activities and responsibilities ( i.e. homework) are completed. Parents should limited teens screening time instead for schools work.
To begin with, online time for teens should be limited except for school work. The article, "Teens and the Internet: How Much is too Much by Stephanie Newman P.H.D.", says, "If this is when overuse is occurring and if it is interfering with school or socializing, time to remove the desktop or lock up laptop" (Newman). This means that parents should lock up the laptop and remove the desktop so the teens can go to school and socialize with friends. Teens should have one day with no desktops or no laptops and go to school and socialize with friends.
Finally, if teens and kids get too much screen time, they will have higher blood pressure, loss of sleep. The article, " Kids still getting too Much Screen Time, Experts says by Amy Norton", it says, " That advice is based on research linking more screen time to obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol, sleep loss, and problems at school" (Norton). It has become common today to dismiss different perspectives, such as Danah Boyd’s, that teenagers aren’t the ones responsible for themselves constantly being on the internet, but society is the one to blame. Many people assume that teenagers have put themselves in the position of being addicted to the internet, yet Danah Boyd complains in her article, “Blame Society, Not the Screen Time”, that, “We put unprecedented demands on our kids, maxing them out with structured activities, homework and heavy expectations.” In making this comment, Danah Boyd argues that adults continuously add stress and pressure to teenagers, which then results in teenagers resorting to the internet as a way of socializing. The use of the internet may be beneficial; it all depends on how the student uses it. Teens should not be able to use a significant about of time online because it affects their social isolation, physical and also mental health.
