In children’s literature, religion can pose a challenge for parents and educators. How should adults introduce religion to children in a fun and objective way? For the past weeks we have been reading and evaluating different topics on children’s literature. Now I feel more confident in exploring in depth many concepts often regarded as inappropriate for children’s books. American society is composed of different cultures, religions and beliefs that intertwine across all social levels. In this growing melting pot books can expose our children to different faiths and traditions from around the world. Many adults become familiar only with their personal religious practices; as a result children lack the exposure and knowledge of other’s people’s faith. There are no guidelines on how to introduce or teach children about other religions, traditions or philosophies. Books can be a valuable tool to share these diverse values and avoid future misconceptions often held towards those whose beliefs are different. Books that are age appropriate for specific children about religion can open the way to more dialogue and respect for others different then our own. All these religions and philosophies share a common purpose, regardless of their teachings and practices. They instruct kindness, respect, love, sharing and the importance of life and nature in this world. Parents and educators should be objective and not tell our children what to believe, instead teach them how to think and respond to differences and similarities to their own ideas.

The fifth chapter of The Educated Imagination, “The Verticals of Adam” by Northrop Frye, explains his feelings about the necessity for children to be exposed to some fundamental texts in the literary spectrum in a certain order to best enable them to understand twentieth century society. The understanding of the Christian Bible, and Greek/Roman mythology are said by Frye to be key factors in how a child will interpret future literature. It is noted by Frye that the bible should be taught first, followed by the mythologies of the Greeks/Romans. Chapter six, … Or the Bible, of How to Read Literature Like A Professor (HTRLLAP) asserts that connect all of the dots is vital, and how a story about the loss of innocence always hit so hard because they are final. The two biggest points of this chapter, though, are how not all uses of religion are straight-forward, how some are there just to illustrate a disparity and that the names of the characters in a novel are almost always important to a writer's point and can help carry their message.

Brandt’s essay, Do Kids Need Religion?” is based on how someone should answer a kid’s question. When Brandt’s daughter was ten years old, her friends died in a house fire. The parents of Brandt’s daughter’s friends took the death well because they were strong and brave about what happened. They were devoted Catholics and talked about how their two little girls were in heaven. But Brandt is not religious in any way and when her daughter asked what happened to her friends, he told her something that he did not believe in because he thought that these deaths had no meaning and could not justify it. Brandt asks families if they think that their children needs religion. He also asks doctors on their point of view about religion and if kids need it. Throughout history, literature has served as a prominent tool in the examination of social values, ideas, and dreams. In addition, literature has provided a vital connection between historical, social, and political events. Through the incorporation of religious principles and philosophies, writers have discovered a way to portray different time periods, characters, feelings, and most importantly God.
In schools, the place where Americans first learned critical fundamentals and values of freedom, religion is separated from home life to school life. In the United States, 89% of public school teacher’s cannot lead a class in prayer, 36% can teach a class comparing religions in different countries, and only 23% can read from the Bible for examples of literature (citation). Without religious instruction in schools, students are not granted with the option to display their faith and practice their religion in a school setting. There are many different religions with many different beliefs, traditions, practices, and rituals. These differences are a very important part of understanding and appreciating the culture and history behind the specific religion. However, the practices that certain religions have in common can aid even more in furthering the understanding of specific beliefs of other religions. Since most religions cultivate from the practices and beliefs of other religions, they use those core values and beliefs and transform them into what they believe is a better way practicing. Religions use similarities within each other and twist them into their own. There are certain beliefs within every religion that shape their practices such as their morals or their most essential or absolute value, their position on human beings’ problems and solutions, and their view on life and death within their religion. Pure Land Buddhism (a form of Mahayana Buddhism) and Vaishnavites (a group within Hinduism) are great examples of this very concept.
In today’s society it is hard to be a teacher; especially, in a secular school. The students in this setting need Christian teachers more than anything. The children today need to have a teacher that has biblical values and understands just how important it is to live by these values. Before stepping foot into a classroom, a teacher really needs to understand that each child’s worldview will make a difference as to how the teacher leads her instruction and how the students processes the instruction that is given to them. We are there to encourage our students to take a good look at them self and really examine what they believe their worldview is. This being said, we really need to understand what a worldview is, why integrating our worldview into the classroom is so important, what it really means when someone talk about integrating, and how a teacher can begin to develop worldview integrative activities in a secular and Christian school environment.
