Sexual assault on college campuses is a crime that is committed by men against women (and sometimes men) on a regular basis. Sexual assault is a topic that is not commonly discussed by our communities and some cases never get reported at all. Sexual violence has always been a part of the college experience. It is a crime that men frequently can get away with without any punishments, and when they do get punished for it It’s as little as an arrest. This is a crime against humanity and against all believes, still in some cases it is a crime that men barely are held accountable for. Women are held responsible for the way they dress or act, meanwhile, men face little to no reprimanding for their actions. Many efforts towards awareness and prevention of sexual assault are focused on women defending themselves against men. Although it is important for a woman to be able to act in their own defense against sexual assault, there needs to be more focus put on educating and sensitizing men in order to prevent the attempt of an assault in the first place. Many people believe that Alcohol is essentially a weapon that is used to render somebody extremely vulnerable. In some cases, men frequently use this “weapon” alcohol and other drugs as a means to coerce a woman into having sex, and in other cases, men simply use force against their victim. “It makes it easier to overpower a victim when they are drunk and unconscious.” Many women believe that fraternities are the main cause of these sexual assault issues. These fraternities are known as “unregulated bars” where everyone is allowed to drink even if the person is not
Problems arise when colleges do not supply their students with adequate support, and allowing repeat offenders to remain in the college. The college can prevent possible obstacles by creating an environment to encourage reporting and discourage sexual assault. Also, the elimination of repeat offenders will prevent future sexual assault on campus. Interactive workshops and early education provide essential knowledge about sexual assault and general safety to students entering college. A single prevention effort will not end sexual assault, but through collaboration with education and preventative actions could lead to a safer environment for college
In David Luzer’s article “Is Alcohol Really to Blame for the Prevalence of Sexual Assault on College Campuses?” published on November 18 2015 by Pacific Standard, introduces that alcohol is not entirely to blame for the matter of rises in sexual assault. After thoroughly overviewing the many cases of sexual assault from modern time to back mid 1900’s, before co-educated colleges they realized the numbers have significantly increased. Without any evidence as to why except the common factor alcohol, they started to put blame where it does not belong. Alarmingly, the numbers have increased in many colleges causing people to caution woman about how they act at celebrations. Many people disagreed with the caution of woman, and decided the blame
Despite federal laws issued to combat sexual violence, each year 4,000 college women report to school officials that they've been sexually assaulted. What happens after they file those reports has stirred debate on campuses across the country, leaving parents and students fearful that colleges may not be the ivory towers of security and integrity that appear on their recruitment pamphlets.
Sexual assault and rape are serious social and public health issues in the United States and throughout the rest of the world. In particular sexual assault on college campus are prevalent at an alarming rate and leaves serious effects on the victims. This essay will focus on statistics and the prevalence and effects amongst college students, through examining a number of reasons why women fail to report sexual assault and rape. This essay will also cover sexual assault prevention and things that can be done to mitigate the risk of becoming a victim to such matter.
However, these freedoms may contribute to this common violent crime among college women. Research has indicated that there is a strong correlation between alcohol consumption and sexual assaults (Hertzog & Yeilding, 2009). 57% of college men and 41% of college women engage in drinking activities as a means to facilitate sexual opportunities (Hertzog & Yeilding, 2009). In a study published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs (2015), researchers found that young women who reported that they believed alcohol can enhance their sexual experience were at an increased risk of sexual assault during their first year of college. Alcohol can impair our cognitive processing and reduce motor skills which greatly limit a potential victim’s ability to ultimately express their concerns or escape a dangerous situation.
Alcohol related sexual assault incidents are escalating on college campus, the main cause of this violence is yet to be found and agreed on. Recently we have seen an increasing number of sexual assault cases that involve alcohol unresolved. This is due to lack of understanding the relationship between sexual assault and alcohol. Many professional individuals have shared their views and beliefs regarding this issue of alcohol related sexual assault and have provided effective solutions to this issue. Since most of them have different opinions and beliefs it has resulted in a controversy. A number of perpetrators have claim to be the victims in sexual assault cases that involve alcohol but we are not certain that some of these claims
Every 21 hours there is a rape on an American college campus. Each year students enroll in college to follow their dreams. These individuals have different visions for their lives and they have goals to perceive. They begin school eager to learn and to enhance their lives into adulthood. Many of them try to also enjoy the college years and many just work hard to reach their goals. However, the choice they make sometimes still leads them to a possibility that can harm them for the rest of their lives. Sexual assault happens too many of these students and it does not matter what the situation or location the scar is still mark. Sexual assault is one of the main dilemmas happening today in college campuses that needs to be solve.
Many young college students, girls especially, are targeted by other students or even faculty. Jamie Stiehm, a columnist for newspapers such as the huffington post, and websites like the New York Times online, believes that, “For now, college-age women remain as vulnerable in an atmosphere more highly charged with rape in the cultural conversation as ever before.” This holds true in many schools and situations around the country because of society’s view towards sexual assault and rape. People make it seem like less of a problem than it really is. In many colleges around the nation, undergraduates and younger students in general are not fully equipped with the knowledge or resources available to them for rape prevention. In that type of environment, one that makes new students unprepared, makes their shyness, their fear of the attacker, and their silence a weapon for the attacker to use (Stiehm). Armed with these types of weapons, it makes the “rape culture” very real for students, especially young women who have been intoxicated or overpowered. These factors create a plethora of dangerous situations students could find themselves
Students in campus and colleges are all entitled to protection by the institution and the law. However, despite the two organizations handling the welfare of the student, students have a risk to sexual assault. Reports released concerning the matter state that one out of five college students has suffered sexual assault during their college life. The report further explains that 95% of rape cases in United States campuses are not reported to the authorities. It is vital to understand what sexual assault means before identifying the problems and finally coming up with possible solutions. The Act of sexual assault tends to violate the victim's sexual integrity.
Merriam- Webster defines sexual assault as an illegal sexual contact that usually involves force upon a person without consent or is inflicted upon a person who is incapable of giving consent or who places the assailant in a position of trust or authority. Most common types of sexual assault are “acquaintance rape” and “date rape”, which both take place on college campuses but go unnoticed. There are several incidents that occur on college campuses that students that attend that particular college or university are not aware of. Sexual assault is a major issue all around the world and needs to be taken more serious. This is a topic that many do not discuses because they may be afraid of what may happen to them if they speak out. Recent studies have shown that sexual assaults on college campuses are a major problem.
Sexual assault is something that is increasingly common on college campus’, 1 in 4 women are assaulted at some point during their university career. Some might say “are you serious? That’s some feminist propaganda!” But this is the truth, and is the reality of universities across the US and beyond. When you see a promotional video about Harvard University, they don’t show you the statistics of sexual assault/misconduct. They show you an idealized view of university, they want to show you how you can achieve the American dream! Harvard, as the top dog of ivy league universities, has one of the highest numbers of sexual assault and misconduct. They are top in education, and in crime.
Sexual assault on college campuses is a major occurrence. Rape, and other forms of sexual assault are common throughout any part of the world. However, studies show that women who attend higher education institutions are at a greater risk of experiencing sexual assault (Fisher, B. S., Cullen, F. T., & Turner, M. G. (2000). In this same study, it concludes that in a college with 10,000 female students, more than 350 rapes will occur per year (Fisher, B. S., Cullen, F. T., & Turner, M. G. (2000). It can also be observed that rates of sexual assault are relatively even across all races (Smith, P.H., White,
The White House Task Force created to protect college students from being victims of sexual assault published a report in 2014 where is stated that one in five college students will become a victim of an assault while attending college (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), 2016). The ACLU says that 95% of all college campus rapes go unreported every single year (American Civil Liberties Union, 2016). We as a society need to ask ourselves what we can do to protect college students. Sexual assault can be defined as involuntary or forced and unwanted sexual activity which can include, kissing, exhibitionism, groping and rape (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), 2016). It’s reported that two out of three victims of
Although universities are on the process to educate students of sexual assault on campus, it is still possible to occur at some point in college and students must ready to defend themselves. “Because of the prevalence of sexual assaults on college campuses, institutions have been directed by the federal government to provide programming aimed at educating students about sexual assault; this directive is an attempt to prevent sexual offenses on universities and college campuses.” (Lee). Sexual assault is a serious defense and even when committed on a college campus, should be treated with aggression and
The cause of sexual assault in college can be related back to a number of issues, such being the use of alcohol, an indefinite definition of sexual consent, and the issue of manipulation. Alcohol, which causes impairment in thinking and judgment, can often lead to unwanted sexual intercourse. As states Allen J. Ottens and Kathy Hotelling’s book, “Sexual Violence on Campus”, around 7% of college women that they had been drinking when they had “experienced nonconsensual sexual intercourse” (33) and that “26% of women had experienced unwanted sexual activity by a student who had been drinking” (34). This shows that while
