Every 21 hours there is a rape on an American college campus. Each year students enroll in college to follow their dreams. These individuals have different visions for their lives and they have goals to perceive. They begin school eager to learn and to enhance their lives into adulthood. Many of them try to also enjoy the college years and many just work hard to reach their goals. However, the choice they make sometimes still leads them to a possibility that can harm them for the rest of their lives. Sexual assault happens too many of these students and it does not matter what the situation or location the scar is still mark. Sexual assault is one of the main dilemmas happening today in college campuses that needs to be solve. This issue
Rape is one of the only crimes where victims are accused, but rape is never the victims fault. I am here today to discuss the devastating issue of campus rape cases in our local area. University of Maryland has one of the highest forcible rape statistics in the nation. Needless to say, many people close to us attend this university: friends, family members, and peers. Is it not our job to take care of the next generation that will lead us? Protection of students needs to be increased. Safety precautions such as camera’s, guards, sufficient training for security members, and panic buttons need to be expanded.
Every 98 seconds sexual assault occurs. More than 570 people in the United States alone face sexual assault in the duration of 24 hours. A large percent of these victims are students. Rape and sexual assault is escalating rapidly throughout the country within highschool and college students meanwhile schools are not addressing these issues. Many factors contribute to the rise of sexual assault such as; illegal drinking, greek-life, lack of police related officials, and campuses are not supporting them. Although students don’t speak up about sexual assault because they are afraid of getting in trouble, these incidents are occurring more and more. Schools need to address the issue of sexual assault on campuses because it is the victims and their
Something that colleges can do to significantly reduce the amount of sexual assaults on campuses is to ban alcohol and drugs. Think about it, they can make people more aggressive and make them more likely to do something they wouldn't otherwise do, and women become more vulnerable when they consume drugs and/or alcohol. Also, using alcohol and drugs can impair one’s judgement, decision making, and dull their senses. Not being under the influence in social situations makes people more aware of their surroundings and are more likely to make better decisions than if they were under the influence. So, all colleges should implement a Zero Tolerance policy when it comes to drugs and alcohol. If a student is caught with either, they should be expelled
Sexual assault has been a huge issue for many years on college campuses and universities nation wide. As society has evolved, thoughts on sexual assault have also evolved, becoming more focused on the details of victim treatment than ever before. The topic of sexual assault is debatable and sparks many opinions on weather sexual assault on college campuses is becoming more frequent, or if there is just heightened awareness. Sexual assault can happen to anybody no matter the gender, race, religion, or age. Recently there have been many studies conducted on sexual violence on college campuses and universities producing ample amounts of statistics. One may argue that sexual assault rates are the same, but there are simply more studies and attention on sexual assault in the past 20 years. Gender roles have played a huge part in sexual assault on college campuses. Women and men have different expectations when it comes to roles in the relationship, men are often expected to make the first move. One may ask what causes a perpetrator to sexually harass somebody and think it is acceptable. There are various reasons as to why perpetrators do what they do, and may vary from person to person. Although sexual violence is a large problem for many colleges and universities, there is a surprising shortage of federal laws/rules and regulations regarding sexual assault. Colleges are able to develop their own personal policies and procedures for how they will prevent and deal with sexual
In most recent years there has been an epidemic of sexual assaults across the nation. In the United States alone, a rape occurs every 6.2 minutes resulting in 1 out of every 5 women as well as 1 out of every 71 men being sexually assaulted or raped in their lifetime. This problem has been something that has been hushed for many years affecting the lives of the victims for a lifetime. We the nation need to take a stand to teach our young men and women that it is inappropriate to violate a person’s personal space without consent. This problematic phenomenon has not only affected the lives of the people throughout today’s society, but has become a tremendous outbreak within college campuses.
Over the course of modern history women have sought for equality. Men, for all of time, have had more power and opportunities. Women have never been afforded the same rights men have. Recently as the feminist movement once again gains steam, women’s rights are finally being discussed at length. The United States of America has become more progressive as a nation, and gender equality is now something we are striving for. The feminist movement has a great hand in our ability to finally reach gender equality. Again, due to the country becoming more progressive, we are also addressing the pressing issue of sexual assault on college campuses. This is an especially concerning matter because it is continuing to be a growing issue, and seemingly little has been done to halt its growth. Through a blend of greater sexual assault education, and the curriculum of said education, we will be able to educate our youth on such a serious issue. Finally, when teaching our youth on the topic of women, we must make sure they are being taught the correct subjects. Only when we recognize the inequality at hand, and are willing to do what’s necessary to stop it, can we have a fair society.
College women are 3 times more likely to be sexually assaulted than omen in the general population. One in four college women will be sexually assaulted while in college. In a national survey of adults, 37.4% of female rape victims were first raped between the ages 18-24. In a study of undergraduate women 19% experienced attempted or completed sexual assault since entering college (CDC, 2012). The myths and rape culture surrounding it makes the suffering and experiences of victims seem invalid and insignificant. Young women come to college for awesome experiences, to learn prosper and have fun not be taken advantage of. Humans need to feel secure and safe in new environments like university. Negligence, rape culture and lack of preparation by campus authority/administration when dealing with sexual assault(SA) further perpetuates sexual violence on college campuses.
Most college’s sexual assault prevention programs may be useless and unreliable because they are focused on the victims and not the attackers. Most sexual assaults are unreported, giving campus staff worker and campus police authorities the false impression that current efforts are adequate. In additions, campus police may be influenced by college administrators who fear that too strong a persuasion on the problem may lead to potential students and their parents to believe that sexual assault occurs more often at their college than at others. Prevention programs need to focus more on educating both men and women. Programs such as event around campus, especially for men that focus on rape reduction should be mandatory at college campuses. Sexual
Rape and sexual violence on campus has been a damaging part of recorded history in The United States. However, a significant number of these crimes can be traced back to fraternities and sororities members. Influences of various drugs and excessive alcohol consumption are only a few of the numerous factors which weigh in on these heinous crimes. How rape is perceived by today's society also plays a vital role in how these crimes are currently viewed and prosecuted. Even how rape and sexual assault were viewed thousands of years ago during the ancient Greek era still has lingering effects today. Therefore, in order to decrease rape and sexual violence on campuses fraternities and sororities should be dissolved.
Sexual assault has become an ongoing problem across the United States, especially on college campuses. It is not uncommon for one to expect a female dressed scandalously or a male under the influence to experience sexual assault. There is no known definition of consent or when consent is given that leads to this increase in sexual violence. Many cases and stories have risen where the victim of these crimes are not taken seriously or given proper respect when dealing with the situation. The victims are stereotyped, used as the root of jokes, mocked in the media, and are not taken seriously. Sexual violence is a serious matter that our society denies as a real issue resulting in a lack of regard for the victims and poor handling of the situation by medical
Although universities are on the process to educate students of sexual assault on campus, it is still possible to occur at some point in college and students must ready to defend themselves. “Because of the prevalence of sexual assaults on college campuses, institutions have been directed by the federal government to provide programming aimed at educating students about sexual assault; this directive is an attempt to prevent sexual offenses on universities and college campuses.” (Lee). Sexual assault is a serious defense and even when committed on a college campus, should be treated with aggression and
Universities all over the country have actively participated in preventative efforts towards relieving the crisis of the formidable amount of sexual assaults that occur on U.S. college campuses. Sexual assault among college students—as both victims and perpetrators—is an epidemic that has been identified and acknowledged as problematic for several decades. As an ongoing and consistent problem, there is little empirical evidence indicating that sexual violence prevention initiatives to date have been effective. The U.S. National Institute of Justice (NIJ) estimates that between one-fifth and one-quarter of college women are victims of sexual assault, including attempted or completed rape (Fisher, Cullen, & Turner, 2000). Recent research
In Chapter 8 of, “Culture Anthropology”, Guest provides several interesting topics that society faces or has continued to face with sexuality. I felt the most vexing issue that stood out to me personally was the section of sexuality and power on U.S. college campuses. As important as sexual awareness is in society, I was not aware of how it affected U.S. college campuses. The college provides the backbone of starting new relationships and expressing sexuality. These new relationships can generate positive attributes, however, what has continued to plague schools is the attention that sexual violence has on college campuses. In my opinion, the most important matter addressed while evolving as a freshman at the University of Oregon was my awareness of sexual violence. Through Chapter 8, I was able to explore how sexuality is conducted through society including its uses through U.S. college campuses.
Everybody wants to start a new chapter at some point of their life. Many people believe that they get this opportunity when they get to college. But what if something so horrible and tragic happened to you in the beginning of this chapter? Would you still be able to achieve your goals and dreams? Face this problem head on no matter what? Or would you close yourself off by ignoring everything and everybody by throwing your life away? Sexual Assault is a very serious crime that happens all over the world. However, it is most common on college campuses. The question that we ask ourselves is: What are the college administrative doing to stop it? To protect their own students and ensure everyone’s safety?
The topic of sexual assault has always been a tough subject to discuss because it is a heinous crime that can and has happened to men, women, young and old.
