Sexism has been the largest barrier between sexes to the point in which cultures as well as religions rely on misogyny to set limitation on women to make men feel more empowered. Sexism refers to the prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of their gender. It is a fact that throughout history, men have had more power than women, and that even now, in 2016, we live in a world where, for the most part, men are still considered superior to women. There are different kinds of sexism present in our everyday lives, some forms of sexism have been embedded so deep in our brains that they’ve become normalized and go unperceived, while others are blatant but ongoing, still, the image that men are the dominant sex is alive and well, both consciously and unconsciously in the minds of men and women around the world.

Sexism, as defined by Oxford Dictionaries is the prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination based on one’s sex, has been an age-old issue in society. Historically, this belief was once much more mainstream and tolerated than it is today. Part of the reason is that women were not as vocal about unfair treatment as they are now, and did not expect to be dealt with as equals. Many did, and some still do, believe that women were only meant to cook, clean, and care for children. A woman having a job was rare during the Great Depression because most of society believed a woman’s place was in the home.

Benevolent sexism is sometimes more difficult to identify in an everyday setting as it is covert and appears subjectively positive. The sexist practices mainly affect women given the validity of cultural beliefs that consider them inferior or unequal to men by nature. Sexism or discrimination based on gender has been a social issue for many years; it is the ideology that one sex is superior or inferior to the other. Sexism does not only affect females, but also males. Men are very often victimized by social stereotypes and norms based on gender expectations. The toy aisle is always the place where a little boy and girl would want to go while in a store. The toy aisle has dolls, cars, playhouses, dinosaurs, and anything a kid could even imagine. Did you just place each toy to either suiting a boy or girl more? Sexism shockingly first comes to play among kids and what colors and toys belongs to one another. I’m definitely guilty for analyzing different items for either a boy or girl, but we shouldn’t be doing this. Having the kids grow up with sexism, even if it is little things, is instructing the kids that stereotyping is okay. Personally, this topic is important to me because stereotyping is a big issue throughout the world and we could slowly stop the stereotyping by limiting it from the infant's

From the get involved assignment, I learned of two kinds of sexism: hostile and benevolent sexism. Hostile sexism involve negative feelings towards women such as “women are incompetent”; while benevolent sexism a knight-in-shining armor ideology that offers protection and affection to women who conform to traditional gender roles (ASI: Understanding prejudice). Furthermore, benevolent women may want the protection of males when they find themselves in certain situations and places that they find particularly dangerous (Yoder 2017).

I am fifteen years old, and anytime I go swimming or go out without my dad or brother, I am harassed, usually by men who are much older than I am. This doesn't make me feel “beautiful” as some men claim it does, it makes me feel uncomfortable and without control.

Sexism has been manifested in different ways across the globe and through time, but it often uses the same methods. Across many cultures, women are seen as inferior and subordinate and are dominated by the men who control their lives. This can be expressed in two different ways: being viewed as having lesser worth and ability, or inferiority, and having little freedom or power, or subordination. In The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights by John Steinbeck and Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Mah, these two facets of culture can be seen acting in different and yet similar means, as well as being causes and effects of each other.
