Sex trafficking has become one of the fastest growing crimes occurring internationally. It is the third largest crime-business in the world, after drugs and arms trafficking. Women, girls, and even men and boys are victims of the billion-dollar sex trafficking industry. Sex trafficking occurs everywhere, and it is not culturally specific, but a gender specific issue. There are numerous cases of sex trafficking within Cambodia, however child sex trafficking is extremely captivating and distressing to learn about.

Ss the great Ben Franklin said “Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are” until everyone takes an active step to ending human trafficking, it won't happen. But many individuals have stepped up to take a role fighting human trafficking. Such as Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi who has fought to protect the rights of 83000 children, often putting himself in harm’s way to do so. Once, just as Kailash once heard of a man who sold his 15 year old daughter to a brick maker. Right away Kailash tried to get in but was repelled by the armed guards and the mass amount of people. He then convinced a judge to send him with a police force to the place, and managed to save the 15 year old girl and many others. once said “ Child slavery is a crime against humanity. Traffickers are the economically powerful and dominant group in our society and victims are the economic minority (Dunn, 2007, p. 42-43). Victims also strip of their identifications, passports and money by the traffickers and are said to owe the traffickers a debt for transportation. Traffickers are led by greed and display their dominance by victimizing children through the use of control, deception, manipulation, violence and sex until they bend and break the trafficked child into doing whatever is asked of them (“Survivor Stories”, 2014). Traffickers also take children away from everything that they know, such as their families and their countries and so they are literally dependent on their traffickers for everything.

This growing issue deserves attention for the main reasons that the success/rescue rate is so low. Only 1-2% of victims taken into sex trafficking are ever rescued (A21, 2016). This low rescue rate can be related to the low percentage of awareness and knowledge of the issue. Most Americans don’t know what sex trafficking looks like or how it can be spotted. This problem is also deserving of concern because the innocent lives that are being stripped of their moral rights. No human life on this planet deserves this level of torture and abuse like the kind endured of sex trafficking. Traffickers want their victims to feel as alone and helpless as possible, because it allows for the most power and control over them. Victims are sometimes viewed as no more than possessions or animals, and are treated in the most degrading and cruel ways imaginable. In a story entitled, “Teen Girls’ Stories of Sex Trafficking in U.S.,” ABC News reported a story on two girls from Phoenix who were forced into the sex trade (Teen 1). Both of them suffered harsh treatment from their captors. One girl was held at gunpoint, kept in a dog cage and “crushed into a drawer under a bed”

Around the world and right here in the United States, Human Trafficking is a form of modern slavery. The difficult comprehension of this human reality within our own communities, makes this travesty hard to combat. Understanding the pervasiveness, the reality of the crime and the impact it has on a community are a call to action for all of us.

To the minds of most, slavery seems to be a non-existent issue nowadays; however, human enslavement remains a problematic concern throughout the world. For instance, present-day subjugation of humans includes mainly the trafficking of children, women, but men too are forced into the perverse crime of sex trafficking. Throughout the southeast Asian countries especially, sex trafficking has increasingly become corrupt. The sexual exploitation has become out of control in which thousands of lives every year are dehumanized as well as mentally and physically abused because of high demand for sex and ravenous greed for money.

Human trafficking is an epidemic around the world. It doesn’t just happen once in a great while, but it’s happening all the time. Every single day, people are involved in human trafficking. People need to help raise awareness of what is going on around the world, and we are definitely not doing enough to help stop this issue. Also, the way the women and children are being treated is absolutely horrible. They are beaten, starved, and even murdered. In almost every situation, they can’t do anything about it because they are scared for their lives. Society as a whole needs to be more educated about human trafficking.

One of the most talked about issues our country is facing today, and will be facing in the upcoming years is the idea of human trafficking, whether it be for labor or sex trades. There was an estimated 4.5 billion people in 2014 that were victims of sex trafficking around the world (Gary). The sex trafficking industry, which is the most common form of human trafficking, is an extremely inhumane trade that takes girls, strips them of their privacy, and forces them to perform sexual act that ultimately scars them both mentally and physically forever. Daily average females are being forced into this industry where they experience years of unimaginable abuse and torture; and sadly have a hard time escaping.

It’s terrifying to know that there are unsolvable issues beyond and in our own cities. As we turn on our local news channels, we often see bolded headlines that contain events in which someone has been abducted, beaten, and even murdered. We observe the effects of evil from our living room and wish there was a way to better the issues that feel heavy with our hearts. We begin to dread the days that follow because we fear the next headline will be news of a loved one. It reaches a point where everything feels as if it has collapsed inside and there is no fix.
