One of the most talked about issues our country is facing today, and will be facing in the upcoming years is the idea of human trafficking, whether it be for labor or sex trades. There was an estimated 4.5 billion people in 2014 that were victims of sex trafficking around the world (Gary). The sex trafficking industry, which is the most common form of human trafficking, is an extremely inhumane trade that takes girls, strips them of their privacy, and forces them to perform sexual act that ultimately scars them both mentally and physically forever. Daily average females are being forced into this industry where they experience years of unimaginable abuse and torture; and sadly have a hard time escaping. Sex trafficking is a problem everywhere, even in the United States. In fact, in an article written by Kimberly Kotrla reveals this very interesting statistic: “More U.S. citizens are victims of sex trafficking than are foreign nationals… American youths are the most vulnerable to become victims of sex trafficking in this …show more content…
One former victim, Tajuan McCarty, opened “The Wellhouse”, which helps victims rebuild their lives (Calhoun). After victims escape they usually have nowhere to go. Consequently, there is a need for more sanctuaries like “The Wellhouse” across the U.S. for survivors to rehabilitate. But, it does not take a victim to be a hero. Just as anyone can be a “pimp”, anyone can be a hero and can stop an act of trafficking. In fact, one of the most recent human trafficking “heroes” is just an ordinary flight attendant, named Donna Hubbard. In an article by The New York Times, Donna gave her advice on how to spot sex trafficking. She said “often young passengers who look disoriented, refuse to make eye contact or act oddly subservient to a traveling companion” may be in an act of trafficking
Human trafficking has become one of many issues within the borders of the United States as well as other countries. It seems that quite a few people have come to terms with trafficking and other forms of prostitution to be socially acceptable within and outside the realms of their own country. Even though a lot of these individuals see the injustice when it comes to sex trafficking, there are policies and values that tend to take precedence over the morality of the issue. With over hundreds of thousands of men, women, and even young children being purchased and sold into slavery and hard labor without a care in the world for them. It becomes quite clear after seeing this that this topic needs to seriously be addressed and closely examined.
You Could Have Done Something In May 1997, David Cash, a senior high school student, witnessed his best friend, Jeremy Strohmeyer, carrying a 7-year-old girl into a restroom of a casino arcade in Clark County, Nevada. Cash told the authorities that he left the scene and didn’t witness what happened to the girl. On the other hand, Cash’s best friend, Jeremy Strohmeyer, pleaded guilty “to the kidnapping, sexual assault and murder of Sherrice,” (Zamichow 1) the 7-year-old girl, before trial. Although Strohmeyer was sentenced to life in prison, Cash was not found guilty of any crime.
It is my delight to recommend Amanda Williams to your institution. For years I have watched Amanda flourish from the small middle schooler to the strong beautiful young woman she is today. When I first met her she was seemingly closed off but that’s not abnormal for a 12-year-old who has just left the life they know behind. Over the years I’ve gotten to know her to be a kind, intelligent, strong-willed young woman. Her mother often times would bring cakes or invite the neighbors over for dinner which helped me to glean more information about her life. I have seen her be extremely brave, comforting her mother over her father's Alzheimer's disease; and as I have learned of her family's struggles it became clear to me that this man had not offered
Human sex trafficking is one of the fastest growing and most insidious man made epidemics, coming only after the criminal industry of black market drug-trade. Perpetrators of human trafficking prey upon and agonize our most vulnerable members of society. These unprotected people are our men, women, children, who experiencing an institutional lack of resources. These individuals
“I am the Joker,” muttered James Eagan Holmes. The last words the victims heard the night Holmes committed mass murder in the Century 16 movie theatre still haunt the living victims and countless other citizens of Aurora, Colorado. It is compelling how someone attempted to rationalize his actions with such an elementary phrase, which once had no meaning at all. The claim seems nonsensical and slightly amusing solely because he is implying he committed the crime on the basis that he is the arch nemesis of famous comic hero, Batman. Statements like these alone do not make an intriguing court trial. The men and women sitting on the jury for weeks on end need entertainment just to stay conscience enough to finish the trial.
Sex trafficking is the second biggest transnational crime behind drug trafficking. This major crime occurs every day and many times in plain sight. Sex trafficking, also referred to as human trafficking, is a widespread crime that sells and forces vulnerable people to have sex. The average child between the ages of 11-14 years old are recruited for prostitution in the U.S (Sex Trafficking, 2014). This has become a global issue within the last decade affecting just about every country. The United States is the primary destination for trafficked victims from other countries. More should be done to heighten the awareness of the public to this growing problem in our country. The following will discuss the general characteristics
“Human Trafficking: How A Joint Task Force Between Health Care Providers and Law Enforcement Can Assist With Identifying Victims and Prosecuting Traffickers” by Megan Helton blah blah introduction mention that its chapter two part C. Studies have shown that sex trafficking in the United States is increasing, but a vast number of victims remain unidentified due to the isolation the crime requires. In sex trafficking, there is an obvious hierarchy, with the trafficker at the top. Often, the trafficker will use victims who have been in their control for long periods of time as a sort of assistant. This victim has been so indoctrinated with fear of the trafficker that they will not disobey even if presented with the opportunity. Fear is the trafficker’s
Human trafficking is a global epidemic that affect millions of victims that has being trafficked for prostitution and some forms of child labor across international borders. This human illicit trade and inhuman crime produces around $32 billion in profits each year. "A five-year-old chained to a rug loom in India, a domestic servant enslaved and beaten in the Middle East and sex slave trafficked within the United States are among the 21 million men, women and children held in some form of bonded labor, slavery or forced prostitution around the world today." This shows that, human trafficking still exist in today 's world and it 's hard to stop it because of the lack of political will across the world. Therefore, legalizing prostitution and other forms of child labor in America does not going to solve the global crisis affecting millions men and women; the best alternative solution for this will be an international presidential committee to create a campaign to destroy this inhumane crime and illicit trade across the world.
Thailand, a country that has been downgraded from a tier 2 placement category to a tier 3 has already begun to face the heavy pressure of the United States. Thailand has one of the biggest human trafficking businesses that is currently occurring and expanding in the 21st century. Ever since the 2000s, the U.S Congress has created the Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP) which requires a “minimum standard” a country must comply with to ensure that the country is taking notable action against human traffickers (Gallagher). Human trafficking is not only a domestic issue in the U.S, it is an international issue as well. "There is no shame in addressing a problem of this magnitude; the shame lies in ignoring it.” (Elezi). The U.S should enact strict
Stotts and Ramey stated in their journal: “Human trafficking involves millions of people, most of whom are female and half of whom are minors (U.S. Department of State, 2006). Described as a form of modern-day slavery (Bales & Lize, 2005), human trafficking profoundly violates the rights of its victims. Human trafficking is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing businesses of organized crime (United Nations, 2002).Bales and Lize (2005) explained that human trafficking is a means by which people are brought into, as well as maintained in, slavery and forced labor. These authors described human trafficking as the actual process of enslavement”(Stotts and Ramey, 1). Human trafficking is a violation to the whole community of human on the Earth. It destroys the well-developed human society. It is the new slavery of modern time, trading African slaves are not allowed nowadays, but people still getting trade up all around the world even legally. It is one of the most organized crime. The demand for cheap slaves is encouraging the human trafficking to grow faster and faster every year. Human trafficking is a phenomenon that happens around us every day, people are labeled with price as animals. Human trafficking is a global problem that is dangerous, detrimental, and an ever expanding issue that Governments are racing to solve(Stotts).
By the time you finish reading this paper nearly 23 children around the world will be victims of sex trafficking. Sex trafficking is a huge global health and human rights issue affecting roughly 152 countries around the world (Greenbaum & Crawford-Jakubiak, 2015). The United Nations describes sex trafficking as “the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power, or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude, and the removal of organs” (Greenbaum, J., & Crawford-Jakubiak, 2015). The estimated number of victims vary greatly, but are said to range from 600,000 to 2.4 million annually (Miller, 2013), with roughly 100,000 annually just in the United States (Titchen, 2014). According to Miller (2013), the figures 600,000 to 2.4 million is thought to be grossly understated due to secrecy, and misclassification of victims (labeled as criminals and prostitutes, rather than victims). The United States is not only a source and transit country, but also considered to be the leading
Human trafficking is a real threat that can be come from many different aspects. Each year roughly 800,000 people are trafficked across international borders. About 80% of those people are women and children, especially girls. This is becoming a nationally recognized problem with 192 different countries participating. Human trafficking is a fast growing criminal enterprise with revenues totaling approximately 9.5 billion dollars per year. There is a high demand for human trafficking due to the cheap labor and sexual exploitation, meaning the victims make less than one per 15 hours of work. There are many different people working in this trade to keep the business running proficiently, such as organized crime, different types of government officials, and police officers.
It is a crime that involves 21 million people worldwide, affects all areas from the slums and tribal villages to the skyscraper-filled metropolises, and pervades gender, ethnicity, and class (International Labour Organization 2014). Villains in the narrative range from prominent political figures, internationally organized rings, and even a victim’s own family members. The modus operandi? Emotional, mental, and physical abuse; fear and sedation by drugs. The motivation? Money, and the twisted desires of mankind. And as if it couldn 't get any worse, this industry shows no signs of slowing down. It is the inhumane world of human trafficking.
Human trafficking is the illegal movement of people, usually for labor or sex. It can be done anywhere and everywhere. “Human trafficking is the third-largest criminal activity in the world.” (“Human Trafficking/Involuntary Servitude”). Sadly, most people do not realize this is done easily and often. It needs to stop now. There are little girls out there getting hurt by being sexual exploited, sold into prostitution, forced into labor or slavery, removal of organs, or even worse. It’s not just little girls either; about 3,698 out of 4,460 were women, so that means 660 of these people were not women, and 2,812 out of 4,460 were adults. (“Hotline Statistics”). These are some scary statistics. Another frightening fact is “Almost four million people are trafficked worldwide each year.” (“Florida Health: Human Trafficking”). That’s way more people than most people can even comprehend. These are just the people we caught, there are more we do not even know about trapped in this imprisonment, and we must change it.
Sex trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery that involves the illegal trade of human beings for some form of sexual exploitation. Crimes under the umbrella of sex trafficking are defined in three ways: acquisition, movement, and exploitation, and include child sex tourism (CST) and prostitution (Hammond & McGlone, 2014). In a 2014 report, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimated that there are approximately 800,000 people trafficked across international borders annually, of which 80% are women or girls and 50% are minors, with an average age of 13. This form of coerced sexual abuse has come to be considered the world’s second largest criminal industry - and the fastest growing - currently worth a whopping US $32 billion.
