Introduction
Father Wolf takes Mowgli to the Council Rock to be recognized by the wolves. Bagheera, the panther, and Baloo, the bear, speak for Mowgli’s acceptance into the Seeonee wolf pack. Therefore, Mowgli becomes a wolf. Baloo becomes Mowgli’s teacher and instructs him in the lore of the jungle. Mowgli learns to speak the languages of all the jungle people. Throughout his early life, the threat of Shere Khan hangs over him, but Mowgli is certain of his place in the pack and of his friends’ protection; someday when Akela, the leader of the wolves, misses his kill, the pack will turn on him and Mowgli. Bagheera and Baloo fear that they are not strong enough to fight the entire Bander-log to rescue Mowgli. They come up with the idea to ask Kaa, the python, to help them go rescue Mowgli. Kaa agrees reluctantly, and the they all follow the instructions of Mang the Bat to find him. (Earlier in the story as Mowgli was being carried off by the Bander-log he yelled to Mang, and told him to tell Baloo and Bagheera what had happened to him, and to come rescue him.) They find the childish monkeys and attack. Kaa is the one who forces the monkeys to fear and flee because snakes, Kaa in particular, are very feared by the Bander-log. As the elephants are put into the corral, Little Toomai sees that one of the other elephant helpers has let his lead rope fall onto the ground. Little Toomai jumps down from his elephant, snatches up the rope, and returns it to the elephant aid. Big Toomai is furious with Little Toomai for jeopardizing his life among the elephants. Petersen Sahib, however, rewards him for his courage but tells him that he will not be able to go into the corral until he has seen the elephants dance. (In India this is a metaphor meaning “never”) One evening, Little Toomai follows his elephant, Kala Nag, into the forest. They reach a clear area where many elephants are marching, or “dancing”, around the space to make it larger. Little Toomai returns to the camp and recites what he has recently witnessed. Petersen Sahib examines the place and realizes that the boy is not lying and is telling the truth.
