This year I'm trying to focus on the old Sears houses in the Chicago area (pre-1914). The problem is that they are not easy to come by. There is a Sears Avoca in Woodstock that was built in 1910. (If you've never been to Woodstock, it's an idyllic town where they shot the movie Groundhog Day.) 325 Ridgeland, Woodstock. Sears Avoca. The bay window in the front is gone, but it may not have been there originally. In the early days of the Modern Homes department, Sears sold the customer all the materials needed to build the house, but the lumber was not pre-cut. This made changes to the standard floor plan easy to accommodate. Nice woodwork around the staircase. In many of the early Sears models, this sort of detail was typical.
The entry. That wooden sliding barn door at the top of the half flight of stairs is not original and goes over the bathroom doorway. Photo from Realtor
The Scarborough Museum is an educational place to visit in Toronto. People can learn about the history of Canadian families living in Canada during the early 1900’s and how they survived throughout the seasons. The Scarborough Museum is situated on a piece of land that once belonged to the Thomson Family. It has houses that had come from other parts of Scarborough. One of the house being the Cornell house. The Cornell house is Victorian style house built in 1858. It has a kitchen, an upper floor, which had bedrooms, a dining area, and a parlor room. In the kitchen, there is a stove which has multiple purposes; for cooking food and for keeping the house warm during the winter time. Learning about the stove was interesting because it shows
On July 27, 1981, Adam Walsh who was only six years old and his mother, Reve Walsh, went shopping to a Sears Department Store located in a shopping mall in Hollywood, Florida, where he disappeared on that same day. His mother left him unattended for about eight minutes at a video game display inside the Sears Department Store and warned him not to wander around, but when she had returned from inquiring to purchase a lamp, Adam was not there anymore. Mrs. Walsh was only about 150 feet away from him when Adam was kidnapped in front of a lot of customers and employees of the Sears store. The movie focuses on the hopelessness of the John and Reve Walsh as they discover that the authorities and the own police department were not being helpful to

When the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Omaha during the 1800’s, Dr. Samuel Mercer was on the train. Dr. Mercer contributed to building Omaha’s first hospital, and was the chief surgeon of the Union Pacific Railroad. Furthermore Dr. Mercer’s family is credited with the development of the Old Market. North Omaha is home to a variety of late 19th and early 20th century architecture, as well as Dr. Mercer’s 23 room, red brick, Queen Anne style Mansion. The Dr. Samuel D. Mercer house was built in 1885 for 60,000 dollars; that’s 1.52 million dollars today.
By 1920, the landscape is changing from rural dwellers to city dwellers and people living in cities outnumber rural dwellers for the first time. Sears has emerged as the dominant design of mail order for both rural and city dwellers, but increasing competition from
Located in Colorado's Adams County, Federal Heights is considered a suburb of Denver. Its population of just over 12,000 citizens gives it a small-town vibe, which might make it more appealing to potential residents who crave relief from city life. Denver is only about seven miles south of Federal Heights, so it's easily accessible if you crave a meal at a fancy restaurant or an evening at the theater. In the late 1920s, Harvey Larsen built the first business in Federal Heights — a grocery store — and owned a few square miles of land here.
All organizations will encounter strategic challenges over their duration of years in business. These challenges will come at all different levels across the company. Knowing that these challenges have happened in the past and will happen in the future, it is important to see how an organization will react to overcome the challenges.

Leo Tolstoy 's novella, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, is a classic piece of literature that allows a view of the dying process in an ordinary human being and presents us with an opportunity to examine the dynamics of educated Russian society. Decorum amongst the educated Russian society is dictated by strict ethical guidelines and rules, supported by a relatively constant environment; however, when they no longer can conform to their societal roles, they no longer have ethics to follow and their initial societal guidelines alone do not allow them to adapt to their new roles or environments. The Death of Ivan Ilyich presents the opportunity to observe the dying process, which presents different ethical dilemmas for both our protagonist and
In 1897 Sebastian Spering Kresge opened five-dime stores in Memphis and Detroit with John McCrorey as his partner. Two years later the partnership broke up and each person kept one city. Mr. Kresge kept the Detroit store and began expanding from there onward. In 1912 the company became incorporated as S.S. Kresge and was the 2nd largest dime store chain with 85 stores and annual sales of more than $10 million. In 1918 S.S Kresge was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Throughout the decades, Kresge rapidly expanded eventually opening the first Kmart store in 1962 in Garden City, Michigan. By 1966 there were more 160 Kmart stores in the US and Canada. In 1968 Kmart began airing TV commercials. In the 1970s, Kmart continued to expand
The Normandy was sold only from 1933-1935. The Normandy in Melrose Park differs from the catalog illustration in some respects: there is a fireplace in the living room, there is a bay window in the dining room, the weather vane is missing, and there is a dormer in a front bedroom. Sears gave homeowners the option to build out a third bedroom above the living room (see floor
Even early on in 1942, Herman Miller was producing new furniture that people had not seen before. The fact that it kept hiring new designers and experimenting with different designs shows its innovation.
Sears is facing a huge problem when it comes to making profits anymore and they are continuing to shut down stores. They have already shut down over 100 locations due to them not being as successful as they used to be. They also have a failed stock, drained all their resources, and they are loaded with debt. This company is not able to pull through and make profits anymore because their CEO is not capable of making changes to the company to bring it out of it. He sees that the company is not as presentable as it used to be and it does not have the same appeal. People are not going to want to go to a store where it does not have anything to offer anymore. How can sears become profitable again if they are in such debt and trouble with stocks
