You might know him as one of his many monikers such as Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, or just Diddy but his real name is Sean Combs and he has been around and back in the music industry. Combs is an actor, entrepreneur, rapper, record producer, and a singer-songwriter. He has been a part of rap super groups, involved in coastal rivalries, gotten in trouble with the law, and received some honors and awards along the way. The hip hop industry would not be the same without this man and his many different involvements in it.
Born November 4, 1969 in Harlem, New York, Sean Combs was raised by his single mother, a model, due to his father being murdered in 1974 because he was an associate of drug dealer, Frank Lucas. He recorded his first commercial vocal work as a rapper in 1997 under the name ‘Puff Daddy’. The debut single, “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down”, spent 28 weeks on the Billboards top 100, making it to number 1. The album was released in 1996 through Bad Boy records named “No Way Out” and featured appearance by many label artists. It went through many changed after The Notorious B.I.G. died but it still managed to reach number 1 on Billboard 200 in the first week after release and selling 561,000. The album had 5 singles: “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down”, “It’s all about the Benjamin’s”, “Been around the World”, and “Victory”. “I’ll Be Missing You”, a tribute to The Notorious B.I.G., was the first rap song to be number 1 on Billboard Hot 100 and remained there for 11 consecutive weeks. The album was certified septuple platinum in 2000 for selling 7 million copies.
