Research Problem and Purpose
The primary goal of the study was to present results of a scoping review covering the skin cancer risk behaviors and other related cancer risk behaviors. The researchers noted skin cancer as the most common form of cancer in the United States.
Research Questions
The scoping review study aimed to answer the following research question: What health risk behaviors are correlated with skin cancer risk behaviors?
Literature Review
The literature review was well presented. The researchers sourced the studies from five countries. The studies employed differed in the number of cases and the age gap considered in each study. The authors criticized some of the studies while others were barely discussed. Besides, the review covered English studies only limiting the population.
Theoretical framework
Skin cancer has been identified as one of the most common cancer in The US. Ultraviolet light (UV) from the sun or indoor tanning machine have been reported to be the primary cause of skin cancer disease. Health behavior risks such as excessive drinking of alcohol, physical inactivity and smoking have also been identified as other contributors to skin cancer (Ayers, 2011). All of this theories lies on the social

Out of the 37 studies selected, 26 were based in the United States, three from Denmark, two from Australia, two from Canada and three others from UK, France, and Norway respectively. Articles addressing skin cancer risk, both indoor and outdoor tanning and sun protection were identified. Besides, articles addressing multiple correlates of skin cancer prevention behaviors such as body mass, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol abuse among others were identified and categorized. The findings were then drawn from each category. Although the research was deemed exhaustive, the use of generation destinations in the study would have resulted to rise off the recall rate of the search
Specific Purpose: After listening to my speech the audience will know what skin cancer is, what the three most common forms are, what the risk factors are, and some preventative measures that can be taken to lessen the risk.
The National Skin Cancer Awareness Program represents the new public health approach. This is because it has been created to prevent and reduce the incidence of skin cancer among teenagers and young adults. It takes into account the social determinants that influence a person’s health. For example, due to the sun’s very strong UV rays, Australia is a very hot country and
The inclusion criteria for this study was appropriate to the clinical question because it addressed obtaining studies that focused of the effectiveness of routine skin cancer screening, as well as addressing screening patients with risk factors for skin cancer and the effectiveness of detecting skin cancer early because of routine skin cancer
Many teens today use tanning beds, but aren’t aware of how dangerous they really are. Tanning, especially indoor tanning has been linked to Melanoma and other types of skin cancers. A review of scientific evidence estimated that 400,000 cases of skin cancer in the United States is because of tanning bed and 6,000 cases of Melanoma. An increased rate of Melanoma was found in women under the age of 40, which rose a third since the early 1990’s. As time has
Among the general public the use of tanning beds is associated with a variety of health risks. According to Madigan and Lim (2016), some of the risks include an increased occurrence of skin cancers (melanoma and nonmelanoma) and becoming psychologically dependent on using tanning beds. Another interesting health outcome linked to tanning bed use is people who use them tend to participate in “other high-risk health behaviors” (Madigan & Lim, 2016, 640). For the purpose of this paper, I will focus on the skin cancer and high risk behavior outcomes linked with tanning bed use.
The sin of revenge is worse than the sin of adultery. Revenge is an action that one takes to deliberately affect someone else negatively, whether through violence, words, etc. On the other hand, adultery may be simply caused by dissatisfaction with someone else, and it is not always a tactic to hurt the original person being betrayed. Therefore, revenge causes more harm in a relationship and life in general. In the novel, though Hester and Arthur committed adultery, Hawthorne may actually agree that revenge is worse. Hawthorne gave Roger devil-like qualities when Roger was planning revenge. The “old man's soul was on fire, and kept on smoldering duskily within his breast.” (116)
While it is very imperative to begin by protecting small children from the suns damage, efforts to prevent skin cancer must continue on into the teenage years. One of the most popular ways to catch a tan as a teen is by indoor tanning. The Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) reported that “nearly 1 out of every 3 white high school girl used an indoor tanning device such as a tanning bed, tanning booth, or sun lamp” (“Reducing Indoor Tanning”, n.d.). This significantly increases the risk of skin cancer. This publication, by the DCPC, offers facts on the potential consequences of indoor tanning for minors and ways to lower the use of tanning indoors for minors in the community.
Illness has always been with humankind since the beginning of time. One of such illnesses that was not named until just recently in history was cancer. Cancer was found to be with mankind from as far back as ancient Egypt, and as of today, now affects people worldwide. There are approximately 5 million people who are treated for skin cancer every year. While there are many reasons as to the ways that skin cancer arises in a person, one of such reasons is the common occurrence of spending time inside a tanning booth. The health risks, consequences, and long term effects of going into a tanning booth can not only affect the duration of that person’s life, but also the quality of living it. Increased users of tanning booths have shown serious health risks, from more diagnoses of skin cancer to
We hypothesize that the time exposed to tanning beds, increases the risk of skin cancer. This hypothesis was a way to understand the statement, tanning beds give more harmful UV radiation rays in the shortest time, then being in the sun for the same amount of time. With this we emphasize that tanning beds are bed.
The third factor that plays a major role in causing skin cancer is the Ozone layer. It helps protect people from ultraviolet radiation. However, the ozone layer is shrinking and this is due to man-made products like sprays and combustion of cars that are emitted in the atmosphere. This process is allowing more ultraviolet penetration to the earth thus increasing risk of skin cancer (Bair, 1991, P. 367,368). Ultraviolet radiation are the chief causes for skin cancer because the UV radiation
The elevated plus maze has strong claims to validity as an animal model of anxiety,The apparatus and the testing procedure were carried out as originally described by Pellow and associates [31]. The EPM apparatus was made of wood and consisted of Two opposite open arms (50×10 cm) had no walls and the other two closed arms (50×10 cm) had 50 cm high walls made of clear Plexiglas. The model is based on rodents' aversion of open spaces. The open and closed arms were connected by a central square (10×10 cm) and was elevated 50 cm above the floor. Rats from each group were placed in the central square of the Plus-Maze facing an open arm and were then allowed to explore the apparatus. And their activity were videotaped for
It is a disease that knows no gender, no age, or no ethnicity. It creeps nefariously along, preparing to pounce on its prey at any moment. A silent killer, it claims the life of a victim every 57 seconds, and will wreak havoc on at least one out of every five Americans. What is this insipid illness that plagues so many? The answer is a cause for surprise: skin cancer. While there are many variations and degrees of this ailment, there are more new cases of skin cancer each year than of breast, prostate, colon, and lung cancers combined. In fact, over the last thirty years, there have been more cases of skin cancer
Tanning salons turn their attention toward cancer prevention and turn their backs on causing skin cancer. Lavine wrote, "The JNCI review noted that indoor tanning can increase a fair-skinned individual's risk of developing melanoma by 55%. And it can take a mere 10 indoor-tanning sessions to cause precancerous DNA damage, reports a recent review study by a Kings College London researcher (Lavine)." Melanoma is not the only form of skin cancer. Tanning beds play a role in the formation of other skin cancers as
Thesis statement: Many people do not use sun protection on a daily basis and are unaware of the dangers that can be easily preventive by using sun protection.
Specific Purpose: to inform the audience about the different kinds of skin cancer and what preventive measures you can take to protect yourself from skin cancer.
