Science Olympiad Club Analysis

One of the many issues I faced as a collage student was choosing the correct major. I did not know what I wanted to accomplish after collage once I entered the work force. I had always seen myself in business somewhere but I never had a revelation on which major was the best for me. I realized that I needed some direction to my life and that I couldn’t get through collage without choosing a career path to take.

I learned about RSI through the Science Olympiad forums. I had just returned from a ten-day research trip in Costa Rica, and was looking for a longer summer research program. A Science Olympiad alumni and former Rickoid recommended RSI, describing it as the best six weeks of his life. What he described was exactly what I was looking for: an opportunity to experience the entire research process with others who loved science as much as I do.

For the topic of my presentation I have chosen to explain the benefits of a web-based program called MyPlan. Current students and those going through a career change can benefit from MyPlan. Primarily working with first and second year college students, we often observe the struggle they endure in deciding a career path and major to pursue. Oftentimes students speak to us about an interest in a certain degree area, but are uncertain of what career fields they could find with that particular degree. To assist with those questions MyPlan is a tool we provide to them.

Most people do not know what they want to do with their lives as high school students, some even as college students. I know a handful of people who have changed their majors at least twice in the first year of college. With that being said, imagine being an eight year old and having it all figured out. That was me. From the time I was in second grade, I knew what I wanted to do with my life, and it has not changed much since then. I want to save people—tiny people to be exact. I want to make a difference and keep families whole. I want to nurture premature newborns up to premium health; I aspire to be a neonatologist.

In today’s society, high schoolers are limited to the choice of a liberal arts or career oriented schedule. This holds students back by limiting their choice of education. Various issues arise because students are not prepared for their futures. While some students know their future path beforehand, others are completely clueless. Liberal arts education includes academic subjects such as literature, philosophy, mathematics, and the physical sciences. Career orientated education is a career development instructional guidance program designed to help students acquire a greater understanding of career opportunities that will assist them in making meaningful and informed career choices. While both are powerhouses and deemed important, a career-oriented schedule should be preferred in today’s society. Students should begin preparing for their future pathway as early as possible, and a liberal arts plan hinders their capability of doing so.

As we prepare to enter high school, students choose their classes in alignment with their dream jobs. The process can be tough, as many variables involved with careers will change by the time we are prepared to enter our fields, and college is a more complicated step in between. In order to best navigate the storm of career preparation, it is wisest to base our decisions on our skills and interests rather than the appeal of a “cool” job. Through the College Foundation of North Carolina, we can navigate through every step of the process based on scientific data through surveys. This report explores my personal recommendations as I go through the CFNC process.

Higher education is a time where an individual decides what career they want to peruse by the classes they take, this time of their development also showcases there many interests as it relates to the profession that they want to examine. When it comes to assisting the person that has questions about career and jobs, there are many resources available that will be able to support them in that. Not sure in career to choose in one of the biggest problems of today’s students and it is the same problem that the Grade 10 Students dealing today on choosing a strand on Senior High School. Career indecision defined as an inability to make a decision about the vocation one wishes to pursue. A good example will be the Grade 10 student being confused on Strand he/she will take in Senior High School because he/she cannot decide what strand to choose having career indecision.

Students transitioning to high school should begin to see how their academic achievement relates to various career and postsecondary educational opportunities (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2013). When students learn to effectively investigate occupational and educational options, they will develop the skills necessary “to locate, understand, and use career information” (Niles & Harris-Bowlsbey, 2013, p. 369).

Career counseling is crucial for college students as they prepare for the real world. I have not been certified as a career counselor, but many aspects of my job require these types of conversations with my students. As a requirement for the career counseling class, I interviewed two student workers at the University of Cincinnati about their career aspirations and provided advice to help their success.

Identifying the career path that one would like to go into after collage is one of the more important decisions someone may make in their lifetime. This question has lingered in my head for a couple of years now, and it has begun to feel like an anchor holding me down. I tried my best to clear my mind and focus less on the future and more on passion. This exercise was to find a career option that I think I may want to explore as a career, not necessarily a decision set in stone.

The future is always on the mind. Where would I be in ten years? What do I see myself doing career-wise? What college do I want to go to? And finally, the question that has been haunting me for the past 2 years, what major do I choose that’ll determine the rest of my future? Throughout high school, several choices came across my mind. In the beginning of my high school years, I considered being a teacher, but that quickly changed because I realize that I don’t want to be in this hell hole that is a school for the rest of my life. The following years a couple of other careers popped up in my head, artist, filmmaker, writer, teacher again, and nursing. Finally, senior year came and I was chosen to take an amazing opportunity to work at a news station because for the past three years I had taken a Film and TV class.

As a kid we all had a dream, one that could have been completely unrealistic, such as becoming an astronaut or following in the steps of our role model. We seek after these jobs because we see successful people on T.V. or people we know that live a happy, lavish life. As adolescence, our minds are fulfilled with the most creative ideas, the highest expectations, and tons of bizarre goals, but the question we need to ask ourselves is how will we accomplish these dreams we place amongst ourselves? Important things we do not think about as kids is what we will major in, or if we are really passionate about the job we believe is the best job for us. Usually we start thinking about what we might want to major in during our junior year of high school when the college searching process begins. Even after we think we know what we are going to major in, we still are not completely confident with our decision. The article I believe will help upcoming Southern Connecticut State University freshmen is Nathan Gebhard’s “Four Steps to Choosing a College Major.” This article would benefit Freshmen by helping them think deeper into what they sincerely want in life. Three key things this article will help incoming freshmen with is choosing their own goals, finding what interests them, and help determine whether a job is right for you.

When it comes to thinking about my future and the different careers I would like to be in, I have a very difficult time deciding. It’s not like picking a place to eat when I am hungry, it’s an important decision for me and my future.
