Students are unique in their own way. In order to support individuality and continue conformity schools need to work on every individual with their own learning style. In school there is only one style of learning per class for all students. Not all students learn the same way, which is why teachers need to teach each student according to which group they learn best whether it's by taking, visual, or some things don't work, it is said that “it is true of course, that groups do not learn; individuals do (source D) which is why schools need to work on individuality instead of groups for us to become better learners. As a student, I am often troubled by the rigid routines of the school day, despite the fact that I am actually a very habitual person. The constant ringing of bells, lectures, bellwork, classwork, homework, each a daily practice throughout the school year. Although all of these components promote conformity, which will ultimately support the balance of school and societal norms, they also tend to threaten each student’s own unique characteristics. This then poses the question; to what degree should schools encourage conformity versus individuality? The nature of students is that of an instinctive ability to learn. Students of ages and all grade levels reflect their surroundings and respond according to their interpretation. Naturally it is not only the influence of a classroom that shapes a student but many outside factors that determine students’ goals and abilities; for example, healthy encouragement from parents. I believe that even though students have the same opportunities and environment in the same exact classroom, they are all still not receiving the same education. Conformity is a type of social influence involving a change in belief or behavior in order to fit in with a group. However, conformity is not just acting as other people act, it is also being affected by how they act. it is acting or thinking differently from the way you would act and think if you were alone (pg 188). The instagram terms of service says that you may not “post nude, partially nude, discriminatory, unlawful, infringing, hateful, pornographic or sexually suggestive photos or other content via the Service” the rules that are outlined by the middle schoolers surveyed actually follow these terms loosely, wherein you are not supposed to post a bikini, or partially nude, photo unless you are with your family (Heitner). Like many things, these rules get even more loosely interpreted or even ignored by high school. Upon reaching High School children are more likely to post risque pictures or break the other rules of instagram such as being cruel or mean (Heitner).
Like it or not, there has always been diversity among students in the classroom. It is the fact that each and every student is unique. From every circumstance, students bring a varying set of values, perspectives, and beliefs to the learning environment. Understanding the character of students is important in order to become a competent teacher. Throughout the history of public schooling, there have been ongoing debates concerning whether schools should concentrate towards allowing students to pursue their own interests and maintain their individuality for the betterment of the student or encourage students to conform so that they can better socialize among their peers and provide aid to society. Often times this issue is expressed through school related conflicts and controversies such as the typical school day structure. However, in regards to routine of the school day, this topic is yet another reason why public schools should encourage non-conformist attitudes and values.
In the United States, students customize much of their education, especially at higher grade levels. They must study “core curriculum,” like math, English, and science, but also can choose what language they take, whether they take art classes or shop class, and so forth. Everyone looks different on the outside, so why make them look the same on the inside? Throughout the majority of my education, including college, I have felt like a passive member of the classroom. Teachers saw me as a clear slate that needed to be filled with information. I consumed countless facts, and memorized numerous processes, most of them not being my own. This approach to teaching has proven to be unsuccessful to the goals of education. Students are diverse, with their own learning styles and their own knowledge that they bring to the table, and these should be supported and expanded on in the classroom. The goal of education is to support learners and thinkers, and not to condition minds to all think the same ways.
