Before development exploded in California, the state contained about 5 million acres of wetland habitat. Unfortunately, over the years California has been willing to part with 91 percent of its wetlands, Southern California having lost 95 percent. Los Angeles County has only one wetland remaining. This being the Ballona Wetlands located between Marina del Rey and the Westchester bluffs, it was once a major part of California’s natural wetland systems. Before development, Ballona wetlands natural habitat covered 2002 acres. This area, 800 to 1000 acres, referred to as Playa Vista by its owners is made up of salt marsh freshwater marsh and part upland and dune areas. It is considered Los Angeles’ largest ‘wetland ecosystem’. Although …show more content…
There has been a settlement made between the Friends of Ballona Wetlands and Thomas Maguire partners (now Playa Capital) to develop two thirds of the land with the DreamWorks’ "Playa Vista project." One third is to be saved and will undergo a restoration project headed by Playa Capital. Playa Capital has agreed to provide for 297 acres of wetland and surrounding area, in exchange for the right to develop the rest of the land. They have promised to manage and maintain these 297 acres of land to function as a natural wetland. They have donated $12.5 million for a restoration fund they say will not be used as mitigation by Playa Capital.
With all the restoration and funding being put into Ballona, there are still many environmental groups that are adamantly opposed to the settlement and prefer to save all of Ballona’s acreage. These groups consist of the Ballona Ecosystem Education Project, the Sierra Club Ballona Task Force, Ballona Valley Preservation League, Alliance for Survival, Ballona Wetlands Land Trust, LA Green Party, LA Earth First, CALPIRG, Sea Shepherd Society, and the Wetlands Action Network. They acknowledge that Playa Vista is not all wetland, but open space that needs to be saved from over development. They all stand in agreement that the proposed DreamWorks project will cause detrimental harm to the wetland and surrounding community. If completed, the DreamWorks project will be "the 4th largest
Morialta Conservation Park is a protected area located in South Australia, Australia. The park covers an area of 533 hectares. It is set in a bush environment with several hikes to walk. It has a narrow gorge, consisting of three waterfalls.
In 1935 the Hoover Dam was completed forming Lake Mead, providing flood control, reservoir storage, power generation and regulates the downstream flow to the Lower Basin States. [footnoteRef:20] In 1963, the Glen Canyon Dam was completed forming Lake Powell, providing the Upper Basin States with enough reserve capacity to allow them to meet their annual obligation of 7.5 Million Acre Feet (MAF) to the Lower Basin States, allowing the Lower Basin States to use the allocation.[footnoteRef:21] As a consequence of the construction of the Hoover Dam and the Glen Canyon Dam, the Colorado?s flow often evaporated in Mexican sands close to the Delta.[footnoteRef:22] Around the 1970s, the Cienega de Santa Clara had shrunken by 500 acres. Nevertheless, due to the following wet decades, the Cienega was resuscitated to about 10% of its original acreage in the 80?s and 90?s.[footnoteRef:23] Currently, the Cienega is a 40,000 acre wetland that exists due to the return flows from the Mohawk Irrigation and Drainage District near Yuma, Arizona.[footnoteRef:24] This Cienega is the home of less than 100 members of the Cucapa tribe and is the habitat of several endangered fish and birds, including Desert Pupfish and Yuma Clapper Rail.[footnoteRef:25] [19: D.F.
By the end of this report you should have a better perception on the geological landscape of Silver Creek Wetland Complex, and further in-depth knowledge on what stewardship responsibilities fall on you and your relationship with the land you use.
Positioned in eastern Tallahassee off the Apalachee Parkway, it offers an ideal location that is in close proximity to shopping centers, the Capitol, and within walking distance of both Lincoln High School and Swift Creek Middle School. Of greatest importance to this proposal, it borders the Lafayette Heritage Trail Park, which features two trails, one that heads east and follows the edge of Piney-Z Lake and one that heads west that leads to Tom Brown Park following the Upper Lake Lafayette. So our “neighborhood” will be a triangle of land that spans from Piney Z to Lafayette Heritage Trail Park to Tom Brown Park and for the sake of this proposal, we will call it the “Lafayette Neighborhood.” We chose this neighborhood because we feel, due to its location, it’s a prime spot to invest in the promotion of healthy living through a variety of outlets stemming from the trails that link to the numerous amenities of Tom Brown
An important concept of this restoration project is the funding that went into it. “... Our federal and state governments will spend hundreds of millions- if not billions of dollars in coming years…” ( McEween 2009) In the article ‘River Plan Too Fishy for my Taste Buds’ Bill McEween predicted that our government would have spent “millions- if not billions of dollars” for this restoration project. The question to ask is did this prediction came true? “ Since the restoration project began in 2009, it has been plagued by missed deadlines, a failure of fulfill coequal goals that include… a price tag that has ballooned to $1.5 billion.” ( The Editorial Board
The wetlands does only help the wildlife and humans it helps from damaging property, Now you think I'm crazy but I'm not ok, now listen, wetland can help us by storm like hurricanes', floods, and many more. Take for example, in New Orleans, Louisiana, has suffered extremely consequence of the hurricane Katrina, one of the most powerful hurricane in the entire untied states history. Scientist believe that hurricane would did less damage if they had more wetlands, but in the 1800's they destroy the wetlands for more land and because the mosquitos that cause the yellow
The plan had stalled due to partisan conflicts and various stakeholders not agreeing to any potential plan. The stakeholders agreed to a policy and proceed to initiate restoration of the Everglades. This was possible only through the hard work of our agencies’ scientists, and through input from Florida’s farmers and environmental groups (Scott, 2013). Agreement on the objectives was not obtained, but the policy itself was agreed upon. “It provides what [environmental groups] wanted, which is a stable source of funding. And it creates certainty for us, “said Gaston Cantens, vice president for sugar producer Florida Crystals. “We reached a level of consensus” (Reid,
The loss of Louisiana coastal land is one of the most major factors in our environment today. Louisiana has already loss 1,880 square miles of land in the past eight decades. This problem is effecting the state funding to help solve the problem before the state lose more coastal land. Human disturbance has had a massive impact on the balance of wetland growth and decline. (Wilson, 2013). In order to stop this situation the state needs to have a stronger structural protection for the coast line. (Wilson, 2013).
As a kid I lived in Lower Bank, New Jersey, and had the great opportunity of growing up surrounded by marshlands and waterways. Over time I began to notice that the wetlands around our home were gradually becoming filled with litter, and since both of my parents were self-labeled environmentalists I knew that trash had no place in the water. This was made even more so apparent when one day my father rescued a turtle at the dock by our house that had been caught in old netting and fishing line. My parents saw how distraught I was at seeing an animal harmed and then decided that getting me involved with the camps at the Wetlands Institute would be a beneficial experience due to the conservation efforts that they perform there.
An up-to-date survey of the entire property which shows the existing improvements and the location of all wetlands and poorly and very poorly drained soils (including wetland flag numbers), wetland buffer, and 12’ primary structure setback from the buffer edge. The survey should be prepared by a licensed surveyor. For properties where the wetland delineation is older than 3 years, the professional who did the original delineation should reconfirm the accuracy of the boundaries in writing as part of the application. The Conservation Commission reserves the right to request documentation/notes for any wetlands delineation.
The TVA has turned portions of its large land mass into recreational facilities and areas for societal use. To do this, the TVA "[maintains] beautiful reservoirs, campgrounds, trails, whitewater streams and over 300,000 acres of devolved and undeveloped lands for [us] to play on," (3). On the 13th of November 2015, local headlines were showcasing the recent season for TVA campgrounds and visitor centers. They were successful in having close to 100,000 people go through their centers and exploring the beautiful areas. This is just a piece of physical evidence that proves that the TVA is still currently fulfilling its mission to improve the quality of life of citizens and the environment, by maintaining its overall
Louisiana’s Gulf Coast is eroding into the sea, and by 2100 most of Southeast Louisiana could be completely underwater. Not only does this threaten human and animal habitats, but also the energy, shipping, fishing, and tourist industries that have made this region of the U.S. a valuable part of the national economy (Marshall, 2014). In the past 200 years, half of the nation’s wetland habitats have been lost due to natural and manmade processes. Louisiana’s wetlands make up 40 percent of the total wetlands in the continental United States. 80 percent of losses, nationally, are of Louisiana’s coast (Williams).
The objective of this case study is to investigate the various systemic, corporate and ethical issues behind Questar Corporation’s drilling operations on the Pinedale Mesa. Besides that, this case study is conducted to determine the value of wildlife species and its balance against the economic interests of Questar Corporation.
In this essay I will be exploring the topic of regeneration and whether the development has had any crucial impact on the area Deptford Creek. Regeneration to me is to make something better, so I will be investigating to see if the regeneration has improved living standards for the people living in the area. In terms of regeneration, change is a key factor hence why I will be looking at how Deptford Creek has changed over the past years.
I decided to test the ecological status of the wetland by gathering samples from the wetland and testing it for various aspects in the water and the plants that are found within the area.
