Salvador Dali, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, seemed to be a madman when it came to his art and his appearance, and he absolutely embraced it. Dali went against the grain from a very young age. While in art school, he was an eccentric. He dressed like a 19th century Englishman and grew out his hair and sideburns (Bio.com). Dali wanted to separate himself from the others. Not only did his appearance make him unique, but his art was incredibly impressive as well. Dali’s surrealist art combined painting with the psychoanalytical work of Sigmund Freud, while his work from his classical period combined themes of science, history and religion. Dali’s wide range of artistic abilities, evolving styles, and creating reality from dreams and subconscious thought make him one of the most important artists of all time.

This quote by Dali shows just how unpredictable his mind was. His work ranged from surrealism to realism, two dimensional to three dimensional, and religious influence to scientific influence (Art). We know that Dali “studied the works of the ‘masters’ including Rembrandt, Velazquez, Vermeer, Raphael, and Da Vinci” but he never stuck with one style (Art). “He would be influenced by the new art movements emerging” (Art). Dali changed his style whenever a new one appeared. This is evident in his work because so many of his pieces seem to have a different style and influence.
