Sacrifice is “an act of giving up something valued for the sake of something else.” -Anonymous. The Outsiders, by H.E Hinton is a book where Ponyboy and friends live life in a gang. You can see sacrifices being made in order for them to better the lives of each other. One theme evident in the novel is people make sacrifices for the things they care about. The theme, “people make sacrifices for the things they care about is seen through Johnny’s actions in the first part of the book. While in the park, Ponyboy says, “You really killed him, huh Johnny?… [Johnny replied] I had too. They were drowning you Ponyboy.” (50). Johnny kills Bob to save Ponyboy from getting drowned. Although his actions were just, taking a life could lead to the loss of Johnny’s freedom, or even the possibility of losing his own life. As a result, he becomes a criminal and makes his life worse than it already is. In the second part of the novel, the theme of people making sacrifice for things they care about, is shown through Darry’s actions. In the text Ponyboy says, “…Darry worked on two jobs at once …” (91). Darry sacrifices his own education, dropping out of college, and working two jobs in order to take care of his brothers. In chapter 9, Ponyboy says, “Right then the most important thing in my life was helping us whip the Socs.” (114). Ponyboy wanted to help his friends and family drive the Socs out for good. He also wanted to show that he could take care of himself, and for people to not have to worry about him. Although he wanted to fight, he was not in any condition to. He was sick, suffering with bad headaches and lost weight during his stay at the church. Being in this fight instead of resting, would mean sacrificing his health. Knowing the risks, Ponyboy chose to join in the fight to support his friends, therefore sacrificing his
Johnny struggles with a life or death situation and reveals a very important theme. In the book, it is shown at least twice that no matter what, it is okay to sacrifice something of yours for someone else. This connects to the character because johnny sacrifices his life for someone
In this important letter, the author reveals that Johnny realized his life was not worth much, so he wanted to help the people in the fire out of the church when he saw the fire to save the lives of children worth more than him, and he can die knowing that he did some good in his life and not be just worthless by caring for others. The evidence in the book and the indirect characterization by Hinton shows that Johnny is an IB caring
Ponyboy is always ready to step in and help. In the rumble, intense fighting took place, but even before it Ponyboy was in a battle. I don't know if you ought to be in this rumble, Pony," Darry said slowly... "How come? I've always come through before, ain't I?" "Yeah," Darry said with a proud grin. "You fight real good for a kid your size. But you were in shape before. You've lost weight and you don't look so great, kid. You're tensed up too much."... "I'll be okay," I pleaded. "I'll get hold of a little one, okay?" "Well, Johnny won't be there this time…” ---Johnny and I sometimes ganged up on one big guy...” Ponyboy was born into a life where he could have done nothing to help people. He could have been selfish and stayed at home, away from conflict. Yet he never failed to prevail in being valiant. Ponyboy Even when he was sick, he never gave up fighting for what he believed was right. Ponyboy’s reasoning for his actions is pure and
Ponyboy is caring because he is thoughtful. Towards the end of the story Ponyboy went to see Johnny while he was in the hospital. I think that Pony taking his time to visit Johnny while the brawl was about to happen showed Pony’s thoughtfulness. It is clear to see that Ponyboy cares about other people more than himself. He went to go visit Johnny in the hospital taking up his own time, Pony is being thoughtful. Maybe Johnny wanted someone to come visit because he felt lonely. Next, Pony showed his thoughtfulness when he risked his life to save the kids in the fire. On page 91 paragraph 8 Ponyboy said,”“I’ll get them don’t worry”I started for a dead charge for the church.” I think that this shows the reader that Ponyboy wants to put other people before himself and save the kids from the fire. Ponyboy is cleary thoughtful because he was willing to die to save other people's lives and he is willing to lose his own life. Ponyboy is caring because he was willing to spend his time doing stuff for other people and he is
After running for a while they stopped in another parking lot with a fountain in the middle. While in the parking lot a blue mustang that belonged to the Socs that beat up Johnny a long time ago pulled up. They stepped out and started to insult Johnny and Ponyboy, Ponyboy snapped back and they grabbed him and shoved his head in the found as stated, “They grabbed my arm and twisted it behind my back, and shoved my face into the fountain. I fought, but the hand at the back of my neck was strong and I had to hold my breath. I’m dying, I thought, and wondered what was happening to Johnny.” This showed that those Socs were even going to kill them just because they talked back, but they were also drunk which also shows how dangerous drunk Socs are. To save Ponyboy Johnny had to kill the Soc and afterwards they both had to run out of town to avoid being arrested. This changed Ponyboys identity into a outlaw.
Even though some sacrafices are not neccesary, they hardest ones are made for those who you love. Sacrifice plays a major role as one of the main themes in the Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. Sacrifices were made for the mothers and daughters which were fueled by love and honor, such as when An-Mei sacrificed her own flesh and blood for her dying mother, Suyuan giving up her children so they could live a happy life, and An-Mei risking her life and sacrificing a sapphire ring from her mother. These were all made for the sake of somebody else's good and for love of somebody else.
Particular situations that assess an individual’s identity often mirrors the beliefs and morals they prominently value. Due to the overwhelming significance that sacrifice plays in life, writers and artists have often displayed this theme through various forms of artwork, such as novels, plays, and paintings. Adding it as a theme within pieces of literature and art encourages individuals to reflect on their own sacrifices and how it affects their values. As a result, writers such as Arthur Miller, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and William Shakespeare utilized the concept of sacrifice to emphasize the important values of reputation, unconditional love, and loyalty.
In the melodramatic novel, A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, the author uses the theme sacrifice. He shows that sacrifice is important in his story because some of his characters must give up their lives for another. Miss Pross dedicates herself to Lucie because she wants Lucie to have a brighter future than she did. Then, out of his love and devotion for Lucie Manette, Sydney Carton sacrifices his life to save a life she loves. The sacrifices Miss Pross and Sydney Carton make express that mankind will give everything for what they love and believe in.
Sacrifice is a prominent part of human living. In order to get what is needed or wanted, sacrifice is necessary, whether it is small or great. In the novel, Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, he shows that in society, those with less must often sacrifice more. Hugo conveys sacrifice through the characters Fantine and Jean Valjean, by showing how they sacrifice in order to gain and also how their poverty makes their sacrifice even greater.
In the beginning of the book Ponyboy thinks that all you can do to resist the Socs is to fight them. He even knows it’s a futile attempt to change their situation, but that’s all he thinks the greasers can do as he says: “And you can't win against them no matter how hard you try, because they've got all the breaks and even whipping them isn't going to
Dally breaking up in the hospital and crumbling in the streets is almost meaning how Dally reacted to Johnny died and then leaded up to him dying. The parts where Ponyboy says “don’t think of” this is to take it off his mind and try to feel better about the two deaths. The greasers also respect Ponyboy, for example, during an argument towards the end of the book Darry said to Ponyboy “Sure, little buddy” (84). Another example of the greasers respecting Ponyboy is how Johnny helps Ponyboy feel better a lot of in a lot of conflicts. For instance, getting hit or getting almost drowned. Ponyboy positively accepted being a greaser and he is committed to being a greaser.
This quote is when Ponyboy begins to see things form other people’s pinot of view. He understands that Darry loves him, but has a hard time showing it. He understands that he is controlling because he wants Ponyboy to have a life he could never obtain. Dally understood that being a greaser, was never right for Ponyboy. Ponyboy deserves and needs better, and brighter future.
I wasn't about to go through that flaming door, so I slammed a big rock through a window and pulled myself in. It was a wonder I didn't cut myself to death, now that I think about it.” He shows courage because he barrels into the church that was a raging inferno to save innocent children. He also shows courage at the end of the book, “’You're the guy that killed Bob Sheldon,’ one of them said. ‘And he was a friend of ours. We don't like nobody killing our friends, especially greasers.’ ‘Big deal.’ I busted the end of my bottle and held on to the neck and tossed away my cigarette. ‘You get back into your car or you'll get split.’ They looked kind of surprised, and one of them backed up. ‘I mean it.’ I hopped off the car. ‘I've had about all I can take from you guys.’ I started toward them, holding the bottle the way Tim Shepard holds a switch--- out and away from myself, in a loose but firm hold. I guess they knew I meant business, because they got into their car and drove off.” He fearlessly opposes the Socials, clearly showing that he has great courage and should not be underestimated. Also, another time that Ponyboy proves to be a courageous person is when he fights at the rumble even though he feels a bit sick. He put his gang first and fought for them in the rumble.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes sacrifice as ¨Sacrifice-noun sac·ri·fice : an act of offering to a deity something precious.¨ Although that is the true definition ,my idea of sacrifice is giving up something to help another person. It doesn't have to be big , small, precious, insignificant, or important. All that matters is as long as you are helping someone. My father shows the biggest sacrifice of all to me. He gives up his time, money, and life for me to play baseball.
There are many types of different sacrifices that one must learn about in order to achieve a feeling of accomplishment each time one gives something up. For example duty, humility, and tax are all different types of sacrifice. When you must give up your free time in order to get something done this is considered duty sacrifice. Duty sacrifice is the most common because it occurs on a daily basis and increases with age. For instance, doing homework rather than going to the movies with friends or going to work on someones birthday. Then there is the sacrifice of humility, this is giving up your pride in order to achieve something. An example of this would be choosing a peers idea over your own in a group project. This kind of sacrifice is not common yet it still occurs. Lastly there is tax sacrifice which is paying money in order to purchase something that is necessary . This could be paying a bill or buying school supplies when you want to purchase the new video game that just came out.
