Sacrifice In The Outsiders

Sacrifice is “an act of giving up something valued for the sake of something else.” -Anonymous. The Outsiders, by H.E Hinton is a book where Ponyboy and friends live life in a gang. You can see sacrifices being made in order for them to better the lives of each other. One theme evident in the novel is people make sacrifices for the things they care about. The theme, “people make sacrifices for the things they care about is seen through Johnny’s actions in the first part of the book. While in the park, Ponyboy says, “You really killed him, huh Johnny?… [Johnny replied] I had too. They were drowning you Ponyboy.” (50). Johnny kills Bob to save Ponyboy from getting drowned. Although his actions were just, taking a life could lead to the loss of Johnny’s freedom, or even the possibility of losing his own life. As a result, he becomes a criminal and makes his life worse than it already is. In the second part of the novel, the theme of people making sacrifice for things they care about, is shown through Darry’s actions. In the text Ponyboy says, “…Darry worked on two jobs at once …” (91). Darry sacrifices his own education, dropping out of college, and working two jobs in order to take care of his brothers. In chapter 9, Ponyboy says, “Right then the most important thing in my life was helping us whip the Socs.” (114). Ponyboy wanted to help his friends and family drive the Socs out for good. He also wanted to show that he could take care of himself, and for people to not have to worry about him. Although he wanted to fight, he was not in any condition to. He was sick, suffering with bad headaches and lost weight during his stay at the church. Being in this fight instead of resting, would mean sacrificing his health.
